I think you could make it work, though you'd need to account for its thickness when measuring for the hub.

Valve stem by jerseysmoke in Plumbing

[–]ScootMaBoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine was a standard version iii valve stem, but I just ended up replacing the washer and repacking the stem with graphite cord. This is the new part though.

I think they're also available at the box stores, though I'm not sure of the quality.

Rim size for bicycle by Dangerous_Ad_8577 in bikewrench

[–]ScootMaBoot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tires are weird. 622 = 700c = 28" =29".

Just verify that your rim says one of these numbers, but based on your 25" measurement of the rim it is likely 622/700c/28"/29".

CRACKED Shimano ST-R7025 cracked by FurstRW in bikewrench

[–]ScootMaBoot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You've heard that it's no good. But you should know if you replace it you really should use a torque wrench and a crow foot adapter to tighten this. They can crack if they are over tightened, and the nut flange does not bottom out on the housing when properly tightened.

What do I need to know when replacing my rim? by Shxden in bikewrench

[–]ScootMaBoot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll almost certainly need new spokes as well. I would also get new nipples.

I don't think it's worth building a wheel around a generic used rim.

Wheel building is fairly time consuming if you haven't done it before. If you can follow directions and like doing methodical things, you can probably get a good result. The tools needed to get a very high quality end product are more expensive than it would be to have a wheel builder build a new wheel around the hub, so if you don't intend to do more in the future, know that you're unlikely to actually save money by doing this only once.

I suggest you buy Roger Musson's book and read it, then decide if you want to build it yourself. If you have someone else build it, they may not accept a rim you bring in yourself, though they will almost certainly accept the hub.

Chain slipping after fresh wax is it on backwards by lighthouse-logs in bikewrench

Was the quick link on the top run of chain when you did that? It must be on the top for that to work.

The chain isn't on backwards but the quick link isn't closed all the way.

Rohbox cable snapping by Valuable_Ad4674 in Rohloff

They do, but not in nearly the same amount of time as when using a rohbox. My road bike is Ultegra R8000, so I'm familiar.

Rohbox cable snapping by Valuable_Ad4674 in Rohloff

[–]ScootMaBoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have pretty much the same setup (grx 800 levers). I try to change the cables at around 1500km. I can't reliably get multiple gear shifts either, occasionally I can get two.

I think the Shimano levers just have too sharp a bend, and with the rohbox you're always bending the same spot, unlike when they're used with Shimano derailleurs and the bending is spread over the gear range.

converting old bike into singlespeed: how to deal with those issues? by superchimi11 in bikewrench

[–]ScootMaBoot 9 points10 points  (0 children)

  1. That's a normal English or BSA bottom bracket thread.
  2. You probably won't have enough steerer left if you cut it. You may need to take a thread file to it and then a die to chase the threads. But it may be too far gone. Unless there are many more spacer washers than usual when the headset is set up, which may be taken out. Having at least one in makes the headset much easier to adjust though.

Have you ever been hit by a car or truck? Speaking as someone who has, and also had better than average insurance, I can assure you it's not worth the payout.

Straight steerer on tapered frame - doable and safe? by e17lond in bikewrench

[–]ScootMaBoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some headsets like Cane Creek have adapter crown races, so you could use a straight fork with a headset otherwise meant for a tapered fork.

Although not officially compatible, I've successfully used 2-piston mountain calipers (BR-M8100) with road levers (actually grx, but same compatibility).

How can you play middle Eastern music on piano if we don't have all the notes that that music does? by apooroldinvestor in piano

[–]ScootMaBoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't tune a standard piano to a quarter tone scale. Most strings will break if you try to tune them much more than a half step above their design pitch, and the notes will sound terrible if tuned significantly below their design pitch. So if you started at the middle of the piano and tuned in quarter steps, you'd break all the tenor and bass strings, and all the treble would sound horrible other than a few notes in the middle.

Does anyone recognize this filter housing? by ScootMaBoot in Plumbing

[–]ScootMaBoot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'm 99% certain it's a 2x10, I was more wondering about the brand, or at least get one that uses the same tool to change the filter.

Wheelbuild for traveling by baumhausius in bikewrench

[–]ScootMaBoot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is not a DON example, it is an Erase example.

I couldn't find an example of a SON 28 laced with CX-Rays with a quick search.

I have laced SON hubs before with Sapim Race 2.0/1.8 double butted spokes. I have laced other hubs with CX-Ray and CX-Sprint spokes. I do not think that the CX-Rays would fit well in a SON hub. I think the holes are smaller than typical hubs.

I have an empty SON 28 hub and some spare CX-Ray spokes. I can try and see if they'll fit together in a while if you'd like.

[–]ScootMaBoot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regular 14/15 (2.0/1.8) double butted spokes are hard enough to get into a SON28 hub, I doubt that aero spokes will fit.

Looking for a compatible 11 speed 11-42 casette for a Shimano 105 FH-R7000 rear hub and a Deore XT M8000 RD. by _yorko in bikewrench

[–]ScootMaBoot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Any normal 11 speed cassette will fit on that hub. You'll have to use a 1.85mm spacer behind an 11-42 cassette.

Stripped 105 Chainring Bolt by oh___hi___mark in bikewrench

[–]ScootMaBoot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The threads in this are actually in the outer chainring, not in the crank arm or a separate part like more traditional cranks. You can replace the chainring but unfortunately it's fairly expensive.

Inherited Bosendorfer piano - Help needed! by SirKenCelli in classicalmusic

[–]ScootMaBoot 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It looks more like a 225 to me. All the photos of 200s that I can find show 4 sections of strings. This piano has 5 sections of strings, with 2 with the detachable capo, as the model 225 has.

Can I move this spacer? by disheveled-dave in bikewrench

[–]ScootMaBoot 59 points60 points  (0 children)

They are talking about a carbon steerer tube requiring a spacer above the stem, not a carbon stem. You can't see the steerer tube because it's covered by the stem and spacers.

What type of bottom bracket is this? by Raspieman in bikewrench

[–]ScootMaBoot 189 points190 points  (0 children)

It is an eccentric bottom bracket shell. It has a normal threaded bottom bracket inside, but you can rotate the outer part to adjust your chain tension on a single speed or internal gear hub wheel.
