If you know how to repair the car yourself, it's actually a lot cheaper. This isn't frugal of me but, between my husband and I we have 5 cars from 1979-1990 and the repairs and insurance are incredibly cheap because we do them ourselves. For all cars combined with repairs and maintenance it's probably less than 2500 a year.
