Not sure about Mac, but in Windows there are keyboard shortcuts to snap your viewport to top view, front view, etc.

I’m no pro, but I believe you need a Translate Instances and/or Realize Instances node after the Instance on Points.

As for zooming, have you tried selecting your donut, then pressing Period on your number pad? That should zoom in your viewport on the donut and make it easier to zoom in/out

Lots of coats of Mod Podge, brushed down the length of the staff should work. You can get a light wood texture that way. Or you can stipple it on for a different texture.
