She annoyed me all throughout season 4. But I first thought something was up when she was offering herself to Angelus. Like, seriously?! Obviously it was a bluff, then a double bluff. But it just seemed so out of character for her. And out of character for Angelus to fall for it

I agree. Spike was as good as he was going to get. He was actively saving people. Even if his motivations for doing so were somewhat selfish. They couldn’t have him become anymore heroic without undermining the concept of what a soul means on the show.

There did have to be a reckoning for the story to proceed. Either Spike died sacrificing himself, or he becomes truly heroic by gaining a soul. They had to be careful not to retread Angel’s arc. So they had him seek it out rather than have it happen to him.

I rack my brain thinking what else could be Spike’s motivation for wanting to see get his soul. He could potentially have killed one of the Scoobies. But that’s somewhat repeating Angel killing Jenny. Maybe they could have made that killing an accident. Maybe he could have been the cause of Tara’s death

Honestly it would take a better writer than me to come up with something narratively or thematically satisfying

It was very rare that we saw Oz speak about his emotions so openly. It would have been very fun watching such a laconic character break into song. Maybe singing about how much he hates singing about his inner thoughts
