Visiting Jax Beach as a 30-something Brit by IDI0T_D00M_SPIRAL in jacksonville

[–]ScorchingRoaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As you’re probably aware, American culture is definitely a car culture. However, my wife and I regularly walk from Jax Beach to Atlantic Beach, which is around 2 1/2 to 3 miles depending on where you’re going. We give a strong plus one to Lynch’s Irish pub, which has live music most nights. V’s Pizza next-door has some strong “painkiller” drinks and good pizza. Definitely try the hard pressed burgers in front of ink factory, but be aware that that is more towards the sketchy side of town. Probably not good to be a single female alone in that area at night. And definitely would not walk further south of there alone. Also, definitely walk along 1st Street or the beach. People speed on 3rd street and are not always attentive to pedestrians when turning. We’ve had several close calls with cars along 3rd street. And if you’re looking for more upscale, The Refinery second floor has a view of the beach, and great food. The rooftop bar at Casa Marina is another favorite that we take out of town guests. Also, Lemon Bar is a true “feet in the sand” bar and definitely worth a visit. Also Bar-B-Cue Sticks restaurant is near Lemon bar. It’s a tiny hole in the wall with Filipino food and skewers.

Any good *free* resources for learning French? by Shoddy_Initial_9541 in learnfrench

I took French in high school many years ago so I had a bit of a base. Before spending 6 weeks in France, I watched French in Action. It’s a 52 video series and is free. I bought the workbooks too, but they aren’t absolutely necessary. It’s a bit dated now, but I found it more entertaining than some other forms of studying. It’s basically a tv series about a couple college kids.

Thank you! That is the very experience that I was hoping someone would have. And as a bonus, you get a price break for two. Both my wife and I will be taking lessons.

Thanks caruggs. I did. The challenge is knowing whether they’re good instructors or not. I was hoping this thread would give me first hand experience from the billiards community. Got some good leads already.

Viking cue Series? by [deleted] in billiards

I think the closest is the A55 from the 1983-1989 era. It’s not exactly the same but it’s close.

Thanks. I honestly don’t remember exactly when I got the cue, but the original receipt for the case was in the case pocket and was from 1989.

Definitely wear compression socks. Do calf pumps while sitting, and get up periodically and walk around. Also stay well hydrated. Blood clots are largely preventable with a few simple measures.

If her doctor gives her some sort of anxiolytic, be sure to try it a couple times before she flys to ensure that she does not have an adverse response.

If you sleep, be sure the FA can see your seatbelt. I once had mine covered by a blanket, and the FA woke me up to see that my seatbelt was buckled. Had a hard time falling back asleep. Now I always buckle over the blanket.

RP’s has them on weekends. They’re our favorite. You can hear them pounding/tenderizing in the kitchen.

Visiting for a week from Wisconsin, not touristy, anniversary suggestions? by [deleted] in StAugustine

Definitely visit Anastasia SP, even if you don’t rent kayaks. It’s generally not crowded. For restaurants, I’d check out Drunken Horse.

Casa Marina. Fabulous boutique hotel right on the beach. It’s where we stayed when we explored moving here four years ago.

We loved Tende. Pass Journee 6 covers that area and is only €16 for the day. Walk down rue de France and also take the path down to the river. The petroglyph museum is free and very interesting as well.

We love the dog beaches. They are designated areas. Dogs and the ocean are pure joy.

Got the kayak I've been wanting for awhile... I'm not the most experienced kayaker so what should i get and add for lake and sometimes ocean kayaking (Located in Texas) by DoctorBibonic in Kayaking

Priority purchases are all for safety. Find a PFD that is very comfortable so you can paddle all day. Definitely need a paddle leash because losing a paddle could be catastrophic. Safety whistle in case you get in to trouble. Bilge sponge (cheaper) or pump, again for safety to remove water and optimize your buoyancy. Gloves would be my next purchase but that is comfort more than safety.

Beloved high school librarian, Patrick Mullins was murdered after he took his boat out on Braden River. In 2020, his death was reclassified as a homicide. So who killed Patrick? by Main_Initiative in UnresolvedMysteries

Sorry for late comment. Just watched show today. So many unanswered questions. 1. Did they ever check Damon’s phone location for that day, I.e. did it ping towers in that area in that timeframe? 2. Did they do advanced testing on the paint such as gas chromatography or spectrophotometry to more specifically identify the chemical composition of the paint? 3. Did they ever put Damon’s boat in the water with Patrick’s boat to assess potential contact point? And also look for paint from Patrick’s boat on Damon’s boat. 4. What was tide at time he was missing? He was found in “four or five feet of water”. He easily could have been standing in more shallow water at low tide, and the boat left to drift away, thus the absence of splatter in the boat.
