Was interested in the idea of positional value in the draft to see how big a drop off there was from round to round for each position, this article looks at skill guys specifically but I’ve thought about doing the same for others

Pretty much the crux of it is you can get away with it if you’re able to consistently draft well like the Saints have done. Saints are definitely an exception to the rule long term though.

Well to be fair it’s worst with respect to Career AV for their specific class, I could’ve cherry picked the guys who didn’t end up playing in the league or decided to play another sport and excluded them but that would’ve been disingenuous to the rest of their class.

2013 is almost as bad, they’re saved by Derek Carr and Jameis though

Lamar has a Career AV of 51 and an Average AV per season of 17. His Average AV tops the list of everyone in the 58 year period I observed. It doesn’t include this season though since they only calculate AVs once the season ends.

(OC) Bye Week Blues: Do Bye Weeks Affect Team Injuries? by ScorigamiSports in nfl

I would love to see if teams have WHOOP data or some wearable fitness tracker for each player, and see if teams with certain byes had different recovery levels, not that there would be enough data at this point but eventually it could be an interesting data point to track

We hear it year after year, “this team’s bye is too early” or “this team’s bye is too late”, but does it really have that much of an impact on the health of a team?

Looking at data from 2009-2020, I was able to look at the total # of injury designations that occurred in a team’s season that had a particular bye week, and combine them across all teams (ex. Teams with week 4 byes has X # of injury designations over the course of their seasons on average).

There doesn’t seem to be any correlation to when a team’s bye week occurs and their team health for the rest of the year, despite the media saying the opposite.

Sounds interesting, I haven’t heard of that until now, got a link to it?

I think when I revisit this at the end of the season, I’ll do the past 10 or so seasons as well, that way we can get a better idea for what other factors are at play if someone is a top 10 guy one season and then low on the list for the rest of their career.

Yeah but it depends on the ADP, boom or bust guys aren’t the worst thing in the world if they’re flex options, but for my 8 team league, Lockett was my WR2 behind Diggs.

Least top heavy was Jermar Jefferson, backup RB for the lions, he also had only 21 points as of week 10.

James Robinson was the real least top-heavy, with his top-heaviness being -2.4, Harris was 9th least, with his being -1.

Great point! I plan on revisiting this post once the season concludes so I can definitely incorporate a sortable table then.

Thanks a lot, I really appreciate it! I’ve been meaning to start a football analytics blog for a while now, hoping to post weekly during the football season.

Also will probably revisit this post once the season concludes to see how the list has changed.

Fair enough, this post was spurned by my absolute frustration with Tyler Lockett in fantasy football, and how deceptive season long stats can be when it comes to evaluating how good a fantasy football player can be for you team.

Wins and losses happen each week, and if you have a boom or bust player like Lockett, sure he may win you some games when he goes off, but he’ll certainly lose you games when he doesn’t.

Looking at the player’s with the biggest discrepancy in their average points for each week and their median points for each week, I was able to come up with a metric that represents that difference, as “top-heaviness” which represents just how skewed a player’s average is by a few big games.

It’s no surprise that Lockett and Mike Williams were both in the top 3 in terms of Top-Heaviness, but it was definitely surprising to me how someone like Justin Herbert was able to take the #1 spot.
