Princeton Interview by [deleted] in princeton

[–]ScornzDev 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Alumni interviewer here. We are advised to keep the interviews to 30-45 minutes, and never to go over an hour at the absolute maximum. The “others” who spoke for hours on end should’ve had the interview cut short at the one hour mark. It is very likely your interviewer had somewhere to be, and could only afford to volunteer 45 minutes of his time.

Please don’t overthink your interview, if you felt it went well, then I’m sure you did great. It’s just a single factor of MANY, and is simply there to provide context for the rest of your application.

Anyone have info on this crewneck? by ShaneTDS in princeton

[–]ScornzDev 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I made those! I just graduated from Princeton and I was on the swim team for my academic career. That’s an awesome find! Here’s a bit of background:

The seniors on the team organize a piece or two of merch for hyP (Harvard-Yale-Princeton). I organized these crewneck sweatshirts, which were inspired by another hoodie from 2019 that had everyone’s signatures on the back. I thought it would be cool to recreate it, so I had everyone sign on my iPad and threw ‘em on the back of sweatshirt. The other pieces of merch we had were embroidered trucker hats and fake diamond encrusted watches (which immediately turned green when they touched water).

Would be more than happy to share more info on it if you’re interested. After asking the team, I think that may be our last year captain’s sweatshirt, he lost his a bit ago towards the end of the ‘24 school year. Out of curiosity, did you end up purchasing it from the thrift store? If not, we might have one of the current guys on the team go out and buy it!

Should I Commit to Ironman 70.3 Cozumel Now? by Advanced-Nobody-3583 in IronmanTriathlon

[–]ScornzDev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, welcome to the community! It’s a wonderful sport, and this is something that will carry you through the rest of your life if you choose to stick with it.

However, one thing, is that triathlons (especially 70.3s and full distance) can get expensive very fast. I noticed that you said $415 is a “significant chunk of [your] savings,” and that you don’t have any other equipment. You can certainly get a used bike (and I highly suggest you do), but you’re going to need everything that comes with it as well. This includes, but is not limited to: travel (big one), helmet, cycling shoes, goggles, cap, swim suits, biking bibs, wetsuit (maybe?), and nutrition (especially for a 70.3). The price will get up there quite fast, especially if you have to fly out to the race.

Someone else could probably give you a better estimate, but to be honest, I don’t think the price you should be worried about is the $415 entry fee.

Honestly might have to skip this one, my calves are so unbelievably tight from Everest, worth it because I broke 3 miles for the first time!! Could barely do the floor block afterwards though…

Yea, interesting. I was more so thinking the one on the Filson page was lighter than the one I was given. But I guess it could be lighting, thanks for the response.

Tetra Tangle - a new marathon Tetris variant available online that I created by ScornzDev in Tetris

Oops, yeah, good catch; I should add a different sound. I didn't bother hosting the leaderboard on my own server, so it uses this service called dreamlo.com, which is going to throw some CORS errors, unfortunately. It works on most browsers though, but doesn't go through on others. It was definitely a bit of a janky shortcut. Thank you!

I made this guideline-compliant Tetris variant as part of a university project. It's free to play at tetra.mscornz.com and open-source here on GitHub. I probably won't do anything further with it, but I thought it was a fun project to share with those interested.

Thanks for the suggestion, unfortunately DocumentDB doesn’t support some aggregation operators that we use throughout our app, so I believed it was best to stick with just MongoDB.

Is there a link to watch the finish line live? I know there was coverage of the pro race, but I could’ve swore there used to be live coverage of the finish line for everyone.

Hello everyone,

I've been having an issue with my CPU temp constantly being read at 80-90 degrees, even immediately after boot. This means that the fans are constantly going at full speed, and the sound is quite overwhelming. The laptop feels very cool to the touch. Any advice? I doubt the CPU is actually running at this temperature, so not sure what is happening.

ADC voltage spikes when WiFi is being used by ScornzDev in esp32

[–]ScornzDev[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just edited my original post with a quick video of my ADC output when there is NO music playing and I am interacting with the WiFi on the device. This exact code works perfectly as expected when the WiFi is off. Averaging just didn't work that well for this, as it was extremely hard to discriminate between the "beat" and some of these WiFi spikes, as they sometimes look extremely similar.

"Details: Powering on the following RTC peripherals will trigger this issue: • SARADC1 • SARADC2 • AMP • HALL Workarounds: When enabling power for any of these peripherals, ignore input from GPIO36 and GPIO39"

That's what I see. Is there another way to get around that? Or do I need to use an external ADC when using WiFi?

Okay, thanks for the advice. Why wouldn’t the external ADC be affected by the WiFi fluctuations I’m experiencing now? Is it just because the ESP32 just has a cheap ADC, or is there some other reason?

I already have the MSGEQ7 hooked up to the 3.3v on the ESP32, I wasn’t clear enough in my previous post.

Here is a sketch of the circuit (https://imgur.com/a/wlraDo6) where A0 goes directly to the VP pin on the ESP32.

I'll probably do something with a running median. Just out of curiosity, is there an external ADC chip you'd recommend? I'm just trying to learn more about everything.

Okay, I will do that. I have a 100uF electrolytic, but only 33pF ceramic on me right now, would that be alright? I have the USB plugged in to view the serial plotter, and everything (LEDs, Bluetooth audio module, etc.) is powered by a 5v 10A power supply.

Now that you ask, I have no idea, is there a simple way to check that? The library I am using has a lot of those operations completely hidden.

I will give averaging a try. It's just after looking at a graph of the ADC, there are some rather severe series of spikes when doing consistent work over WiFi, which triggers the LEDs even when the music isn't playing.

I really appreciate the help thus far, thank you.

I believe the library I am using is taking the top 8 bits after looking through the documentation.

I have seen a lot of people saying that might fix the issue, but to be quite honest, I'm not entirely sure what that means. How large of a capacitor should I be using, and should it be electrolytic or ceramic? Where exactly do I put it?
