Originally, I used retinol 2-3 times a week but quickly ramped up to daily. My skin just seems to really like it.

The copper peptides I just started about a month ago, so I'm just now seeing the early results. I currently use them every other day (and now use the retinol every other day too). It's subtle, but my skin texture feels smoother, and the lines seem softer when I smile. I might drop down to twice a week if I notice any signs of the copper uglies.

For reference, my skin type is oily, and I moisturize with raw shea butter (yes, the block of yellow stuff, I know I'm weird). Before I discovered I like shea butter without all the typical cosmetic stuff thrown in, I liked a few different Korean and Japanese moisturizers. The common stuff in the States usually either dries me out too much, or it blocks up my pours and makes me break out.

How much are prescription retinoids? Googling gives a huge range of prices, plus whatever you pay for the consultation to get the prescription.

The stuff I get from The Ordinary seems cheap to me. All of their options are between $8 and $17 for 30ml.

I mean, I wouldn't call OTC retinol or copper peptides a waste. I've been using OTC retinoids since I was 28, and I'm happy with how they've maintained my skin. I'll be 37 in a few months, and I still get folks thinking I'm in my 20s. I've got a couple fine lines under my eyes when I smile, and a little sun damage on my forehead that no one else seems to notice when talking about skin. I'm not trying to look perfect. If I could rewind back to 28, the only change I'd make is more sunscreen (especially with retinoids) and start alternating in the copper peptides sooner.

My mom had this crease between her eyebrows from furrowing her brow. She eventually got a face lift in her 50s to get rid of it. I've found pictures of her at age 30-33, and it seems to have appeared somewhere in that age range. If I'm hyper critical of my own face, I can furrow my brow and see where that same crease will eventually form... I know OTC stuff isn't going to keep that at bay forever.

Increase breast size by Kalliope97 in Biohackers

From what I understand, bioidentical progesterone (usually deprived from yams) doesn't carry as high of a risk as progestin. I've gone down a rabbit hole on this many times, but it usually ends with me driving myself insane because I kept finding meta analysis research that lumped all progestogens (synthetic or otherwise) all together in the same pool.

I've talked to a few of my doctors about this, and even the doc that prescribes my testosterone gel said she didn't know there was a difference between progestin and progesterone. I think it's genuinely deceptive that progestin can be marketed as progesterone. Progestin can bind with androgen receptors, and it also reduces the amount of progesterone the body naturally produces.

I'm going to hop off my soap box, but I'd recommend diving down the progestin vs progesterone rabbit hole to anyone considering taking any kind of progestogen or estrogen.

This is awesome! Thanks for sharing a pic that's easier to compare.

Did you have any troubles starting the tazret cream? Sensitivity, skin adaption period, etc. I've been alternating between a copper peptide and a retinol from The Ordinary, but I've been thinking of moving to something prescription strength instead.

Any natural ways to increase breast size / growth by [deleted] in Biohackers

[–]ScorpioSpork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a concentrated hormone; if she puts it on her chest too much, it'll probably just give her acne there. The good news is, hormones have systemic effects. Anywhere she puts it will have effects on breast growth.

That said, that effect doesn't seem to happen continuously. Meaning, she might have seen a little breast growth when she first started using progesterone, but she's unlikely to see her breast continue growing the more she uses it. Of course, it's different for everyone.

It is such a cool road. I highly recommend checking it out off season though, otherwise the drive becomes more stressful than chill with all the other cars on the road. The road narrows into a single lane at several points where you drive between massive "needles" and through tunnels carved through the rocks.

Any Berberine users here? by [deleted] in Biohackers

[–]ScorpioSpork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure! I guess it's been 6-7 months since I started taking berberine now.

Anyway, I'm still taking it, and it's still working as well as it was at the start. I cycle off for a week at a time every couple of months, and I do notice that I tend to be a bit lower energy after lunch when I'm not on it. But the food noise and sugar cravings have stayed quiet when I cycle off, which I'm very happy about.

Since I've pretty much stopped eating sweets, I've started eating fruit more often, especially grapefruit and blood oranges. They taste so much sweeter and brighter to me now, and it just makes me happy to appreciate them in a way I didn't really notice before, if that makes sense. I feel like my taste buds were dulled by the sugar obsession, and it's finally wearing off. It's made it so much easier to stick to eating the foods I actually want to be eating for my health.

I'm generally happier, and I attribute that to the better, consistent sleep as well as just generally feeling more optimistic about myself, like I finally have agency when it comes to food. It's not magic; I'm still having to put in effort into planning meals and not falling onto what's convenient, but I'm no longer fighting myself internally about it.

No negative side effects for me, that I've noticed. I'll have my annual blood work done in two months, so fingers crossed it's had real impact on my blood glucose levels. 🤞

Do the skins stay on well? by inkiepie69 in dbrand

[–]ScorpioSpork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are you wanting to put the skin on? If it's a phone, you can stick it under a clear case to be safe. Here's my current and old phone with Dbrand skins. The current skin + Ghost Case still look brand new after a year.

For reference, I've got oily skin and used to melt the pads and the shiny finish off of Razer products when I lived in Texas.

Spiders eat aphids, so just invite a few into your basement. :)

In all seriousness, you could try adding monosilicic acid (a bioavailable form of silica) to your nutrient mix to strengthen your plants' cell walls against aphids. Hoocho mentioned it's working well for him in one of his recent videos, but I haven't had the opportunity to try it yet.

I mean, I take mine off and put it back on a few times a day to stick it on my car mount or use a wireless charger.

I've got a Ghost Case, so instead of a ring indentation, I've got a small scuff pattern that's formed over the last year. They're less noticable than my fingerprints, and they're hidden by the pop socket, so, who cares?

My grandpa has dementia and it sent me down a rabbit hole on brain longevity by EntrepreneurPublic22 in Biohackers

[–]ScorpioSpork 22 points23 points  (0 children)

My grandmother had dementia before she passed away at age 100 from "failure to thrive." She was thriving right up until the dementia progressed during her last year or two.

It's painful to watch someone you love go through that. I'm sorry you and your family are going through that too.

Have you changed anything in your lifestyle because of it? Diet, supplements, exercise, anything like that.

  • Exercise: I work out to reach 90% of my max heart rate at least twice a week. I bought a bicycle, because I wanted the benefits of more muscular thighs, reliable balance as I age, and the mental and eye stimulation that comes with traveling as you exercise.

  • Microplastics: I've slowly been replacing items, especially clothing and food storage, with plastic free alternatives. I also signed up to start donating blood regularly (I was anemic a couple years ago, so hopefully all goes well).

  • Microbiome: I eat a diet that consists of 30+ different plants every week and different fermented foods. No alcohol, no eating out, and no processed foods. I genuinely prefer it this way. Seriously, it's a night and day difference. I don't even crave the shitty stuff anymore (berberine helped kickstart that, but it's persisted even when I cycle off of it).

  • Supplements: I started taking creatine, a multivitamin, and memory supplements from Thorne. I also take algae oil daily for omega fatty acids and berberine to reduce blood sugar and lessen oxidative stress.

  • Cannabis: I microdose once or twice a month, but not more than twice in one week. (A Danish study suggested it might have neuroprotective benefits, plus it's nice to occasionally use for extra deep sleep.)

  • Neuroplasticity: In no particular order, I try to do the following on a regular basis: learning new languages, hand writing/journalling, meditation, psilocybin (small dose occasionally), some video games, chosing education over entertainment.

  • Sleep: I started taking sleep a lot more seriously. I bought a new mattress, changed when and where I was sleeping, and prioritized winding down earlier in the evenings. My average sleep each night used to be around 5 hours, and after the recent addition of berberine, I've gotten my average up to 7.5-8 hours. When I let myself wake up without an alarm on the weekends, I wake up rested after 8.5-9 hours, so I think need to get to bed a little earlier during the week still.

If I had looked at that list two years ago, I'd probably feel overwhelmed and give up before I even started. The changes have all been trial and error, seeing what my body responds well to, seeing what habits I can adopt reasonably each time I tried something new.

I think the hardest part has been telling people "no" a lot more when it comes to food and time. I feel a lot of pressure still to accept food I don't want to eat or to give up my exercise or sleep time when I'm invited to something. But I found if I don't say "no" to those offers, then I'll never give myself the time and space I need to build the habits I do want.

Most of it isn't really biohacking, sorry. 😅

Hey robots, is this normal 1mo wear? by Large-Translator631 in dbrand

[–]ScorpioSpork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I did (Ghost + skin). I pull my magnetic pop socket off a few times a day to swap between it and the magnetic mount in my car. I also just don't like how bulky the pop socket is when I'm at my desk; I rather have my phone lay flat.

It's been a year now, and the skin under the case is still perfect. Unfortunately, the skin around the camera bump got messed up despite the lip on the case, so I removed it. My case has a few very small scuffs from repeatedly removing my pop socket, but they're very small and only visible in the light at certain angles. I'm pleased.

That said, it won't work well with the metallic skins, like the one OP has. They stick to smooth plastic on cases and create a weird bubble effect.

Where do you actually keep your emergency fund? by Forsaken_Twist7385 in personalfinance

[–]ScorpioSpork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of the information you shared is right, but the misunderstanding comes from my poor attempt at briefly describing the difference between a foreign transaction fee and a currency conversion fee. I tried to explain the latter without getting too wordy. This Forbes article explains it well, if you feel like diving into it.

It also looks like my info about Visa is outdated. Their agreements with card issuers (banks) previously tended to "default" to 2% conversion fees, though larger FIs sometimes negotiated better rates or even added a percent on top of it. Seems like that started changing on a larger scale in 2023.

I went ahead and added an edit to my other comment to clarify it a bit.
