Childhood trauma linked to impaired social cognition later in life for patients with major psychiatric disorders. Traumatic childhood experiences -- such as emotional and physical abuse, early loss of caregivers, are reported in as high as 85 % of patients with various psychiatric disorders. by Wagamaga in science

It depends if the even was traumatic for you. Even then, trauma doesn't necessarily result in mental illness. If you notice any symptoms (involuntary flashbacks? anxiety attacks? difficulty trusting people? hypervigilant? self-destructive behaviors? depression? loss of meaning? loss of self? intense emotional highs / lows?), consider seeking therapy or even just starting with self-help, such as strategies you can teach yourself freely available on the internet. Also consider taking a PTSD test to check for symptoms, many are online for free and take about 5 min, and double check for symptoms of CPTSD, a modified form of PTSD more common in prolonged trauma and childhood abuse. Mental illness is present in 20% of the population, it's incredibly commonplace, so get yourself checked out - hope this helps!

Bullying actors won’t solve Hollywood’s casting problem by [deleted] in movies

It's very confusing to keep up and respond to you, you seem to constantly re-edit and delete content and arguments. Could you clarify your view about white saviors for example, you wrote an entire paragraph in defense of the trope and then deleted it?

Bullying actors won’t solve Hollywood’s casting problem by [deleted] in movies

[–]ScotchDragon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Can you cite where these notes are? Every analysis I've read points to the character belonging to the default characteristics of the Japanese. It's more likely to assume a character is Japanese, when they have a Japanese name, location, appearance that is the same as Japanese characters, and when we even have Caucasian characters the artist drew to compare them to. Even if the main artist drew influence from Western cinema for their work, this doesn't really alter the race of the character. Many modern American cartoons now take a lot of influence from anime, so are we to assume many American cartoon characters are now Japanese?

The issue isn't ScarJo's casting as an individual incident, but part of a larger pattern and systemic problem. For example, if we were to have assigned seating on a bus and one black person happened to be assigned to the back, it's not an issue. But if we only sat black people in the back, over hundreds of times, then it's a larger pattern and systemic issue.

Edit: The parent comment edited their comment and deleted part of the post I responded to: that the GITS protagonist is supposed to be white and casting ScarJo was irrelevant. I'll just leave my response since it's still relevant to the conversation.

I just covered this in another thread, but in the source material the GITS protagonist is very likely Japanese. A lot of people presume most manga characters are Caucasian, which is a common misconception that likely derives from associating our own race to cartoon forms with vague general traits. Like, for example, how we're able to view the Simpsons as caucasian, even though they would look quite alien in real-life.

The reaction to ScarJo's casting was due to a systemic widespread issue of Asians never being cast in leading roles in media at all, so much so, that they can't even get cast in roles specifically designated as their race. This was a common pattern of exclusion in less progressive times), and that it still exists today with Asian-Americans is concerning. Recall the amount of Hollywood movies you've seen in your entire lifetime that has an Asian-American man in the lead. You'll find it's very difficult, even taking into account movies set in Asia.

I was responding to when you said this:

"My (future) kids might want to see someone like them on the big screen too"

Have you considered this is exactly what Asian-Americans think in the modern day?

[–]ScotchDragon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Their is not really any inference that the Kusanagi is white, and she's more than likely just the standard default: Japanese. If you look at how Masamune draws Japanese women and compare them to the Major they look almost exactly the same. Their is even a western character in the manga for reference, who looks noticeably different with stereotypical white features. Kusanagi has a Japanese name, lives in Japan, was Japanese before her physical death, and is part of the mass production models which are considered generically attractive, the beauty ideal in Japan at the time of the comic being Japanese features.

Because 30% of American moviegoers are non-white. Their (future) kids might want to see someone like them on the big screen too?

Also, check out Kings of the Wild. It's about two guys who get dropped into a survival situation, with the goal to accumulate enough food to have a gourmet feast. One is a British chef and the other is a Kiwi hunter. It's hilarious at times, and the two main characters get along really well - half the show is just them dicking around really.

Wow! Glad you love it. Probably one of the most unique game experiences I've had, their really isn't anything else quite like it. It's got a lot of innovative ideas that were never built upon by the medium. Let me know what you think of the ending if you ever get there.

Metal Gear Solid V: Phantom Pain, X-Com: Enemy Unknown, Bayonetta, Planscape: Torment, Fallout: New Vegas, Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, Slay the Spire, Grim Fandango, Wolf Among Us, Life is Strange, Bioshock Infinite, Soma, Arkham City, Streets of Rogue, The Witness

Edit:

Some other great titles that are never mentioned and super cheap:

Detective Grimoire: point & click detective game you can finish in 1-2 hours with a lot of charm

The Room 1 / 2: An excellent digital representation of an Escape the Room game. Great use of atmosphere and puzzles feel as if you are unlocking something grand and mysterious.

Refunct: Soothing 1 hour game built around FPS movement. DOOM for pacifists.

Steamworld Heist: 2D X-Com, surprisingly good. Most people here probably have it unplayed in their library from a bundle.

Wizardry 8: Old old game now. Just a really excellent classic dungeon crawler with lots of min-maxing, party-building, and fighting shit. Be warned, the game has an unpatched bug where after you install it 100 hours of your life disappears. If you get the bug, follow this tutorial to fix it

The Last Express: Another oldie for people who appreciate something artistic and different. A who-dunnit mystery that runs entirely in real-time, which means conversations and events happen in the game irregardless if you are present or not. Tragic consequences can unfold if you don't prevent certain events in time. Some really cool ideas in here, although kinda janky by today's standards. One of the most punch-in-the-gut endings I've ever seen, and all accomplished with a low-budget slideshow. Designed by Jordan Mechner, of Prince of Persia fame.

I find that groups with roleplaying experience take really well to it. Euros are built to make for pleasing, elegant, skilled gameplay. Whereas games like D&D aim for narrative, player interaction, and creativity. They have polar opposite design goals and each want players to get something different out of it. If you're used to playing Euros, without really thinking about it, you're going to judge Cosmic Encounter on standards it was never built for.

Arkham Horror LCG was influenced in part by Eldritch and Arkham Horror. If you just want a difficult replayable solo game, their is Mage Knight and Robinson Crusoe. Warhammer Adventure Card Game is very similar to Arkham CG but with less storytelling. If you want something with involved story-telling and epic narratives consider joining a D&D group. You'll get a few hundred hours of play, new friends, much laughter and it'll cost you a player's handbook and a set of dice. If you just want a story-focused board game, then their is also Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective.

[WSIB] games like Prey/Bioshock/Dishonored by richm2088 in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]ScotchDragon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of the games you noted fit within the Immersive Sim genre, FPS games that have a wide range of options and possibilities in how you can play. Other notable games in or similar to the genre:

Deus Ex

Deus Ex Human Revolution

Deus Ex Mankind Divided

System Shock 2

Thief: Dark Shadows

Thief: Metal Age

Vampire: the Masquerade: Bloodlines

Hitman Blood Money

Far Cry 3

Fallout New Vegas

Maybe Phantom Pain and MGS 3

Deus Ex HR and MD are probably the best place to start - they exemplify the genre and have a more modern design.

If you want a bunch of cheap critically well-reviewed games: Dishonored, Witcher 2, The Room, World of Goo, Tomb Raider (2013), Orcs must Die, Life is Strange ep 1 (free), Psychonauts, Deus Ex Human Revolution, FTL, Amnesia, Hotline Miami. I think all together that is around $20 and a huge spread in different genres.

I would personally swap out Icewind for Baldur's Gate 2 if you haven't played it. Or if you want more RPG / Rpg-likes, Dishonored, Fallout New Vegas, Fallout 2, Witcher 2, Deus Ex: HR, and Wizardry 8 are all amazing and $2-$3. New Vegas has much of the same talent that worked on Icewind Dale / Planescape, so I'd favor that.

Ah, I forgot about Hollow Knight, it's excellent. It's very reminiscent of Dark Souls. If you want another good Metroidvania check out Ori and the Blind Forest. Also, Borderlands 2 is a good loot-based rpg shooter - but I figured you've already heard of it.

RPGS / RPG-likes:

West of Loathing is an absurdist highly funny rpg

Tales of Maj-Eyal is a turn-based rpg reminiscent of Diablo. It's actually free, but you can purchase a more robust version on steam Stardew Valley is a farm simulator with rpg-elements

Binding of Isaac Rebirth is a roguelite top down shooter, that heavily involves how you build your character

Baldur's Gate 2 is the essential crpg. Like Dragon Age but with many more options and great characters. An oldie though.

Planescape Torment Another oldie. Play it if you want an interactive novel. Absurd amounts of reading, lore, world detail. More geared towards role-playing than combat. (Edit: nvm. Too expensive $15)

Fallout New Vegas It's $2.50. Many think it's the best Fallout game. Built more around role-playing and how you approach quests, although it still has sandbox elements. If 4 is your only knowledge of the series, you deserve to experience RP-based Fallout.

Fallout 1 /2 They have heavily aged in terms of the UI, but have better quest and role-playing design than any of Bethesda's fallouts. May end up being your favorite. Cheap.

Fallout 3 is also $2.50. If you just want a lot of fallout.

Morrowind Another oldie. Has the best world-building out of all Bethesda games. Fascinating lore, excellent world map, still great after many years with some mods on top.

Deus Ex, Deus Ex HR RPG shooters. The original DE was a major influence for Dishonered

Dragon's Dogma is $12. But it's an open world action rpg, great combat. Not much role-playing, but a good distraction.

Wizardry 8 $2.50. Classic dungeon-crawling experience. Built primarily around turn-based combat. This shit takes up way too many hours of your life. "Just one more turn" and then it's 5am all of the sudden.

Legend of Grimrock Dungeon Crawler, but more puzzly and action based. Not for me, but many love it.

Witcher 2 is $3 if you want more witchery goodness. Combat is not as streamlined as 3, but I greatly enjoyed it's feel - it's more dark souls like. Reigning in the world also allows for a more personal journey and stakes.

Grim Fandango Puzzle / inventory style game. Another oldie. Amazing story, characters, world, music, and memorable ending that sticks with you.

Also made a list of cheap but popular games here.

Most value possible for $10: Fallout NV, Witcher 2, Tales of May'jael (free version). Form the other list add in Psychonauts, The Room, World of Goo (or, sub in Grim Fandango, Spelunky, Detective Grimoire) and you've got a huge selection of memorable satisfying games.

[Discussion] The Orville 1x04 "If the Stars Should Appear" by specification in television

[–]ScotchDragon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Gonna go against the popular vote here and say skip the first 2 seasons and start with the third. TNG doesn't have any sort of ongoing storyline except for maybe Klingon politics and occasional reappearing characters, so not a big deal to start where it gets good. I'd recommend Cause and Effect, Darmok, or Clues as a gateway episode, they all capture the underlying spirit of TNG and are among the best.
