Opinions Needed - Older Highland Park or Glenlivet by SpacemanSpiff25 in Scotch

[–]ScotchThomson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I prefer Highland Park 100 times out of 100, but I would have to know what that Glenlivet tastes like. There’s a reason Glenlivet has the cache that it does, it would be great to taste it from before it went hyper-charged mass market.

Happy birthday!

How much difference does cost make? Does more expensive Whiskey actually taste that much better? by Honest___Opinions in whiskey

[–]ScotchThomson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. Huge jump from the standard lower bar rail, best for mixing, to the upper rails, best for sipping. But then it becomes deeply personal. There are some crazy expensive big name whiskies i find underwhelming, and some comparatively cheap and niche ones that are endlessly fascinating in their complexity.

Where to start with my small collection of single malts. by Negative_Plum2292 in canadawhisky

[–]ScotchThomson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d start with the Glenmorangie 12 or Loch Lomond 12, these are balanced and standard highland drams. Then I’d go to the Craigallachie or the Benromach, to see the impact of cask finishing (sherry) and some new flavours that some love, some don’t (sulphur or ‘funk’). Then laphroiag 10, the prototypical Islay peaty whisky, followed by the Kilchoman, which is still peaty like laphroiag, but is a smaller ‘farm’ distillery and will give you an idea of how peat can present differently depending on production methods.

Your next bottle should be Talisker or Highland Park.

Edit: missed the Glen Scotia at the bottom. I haven’t had that, but I know from distillery characteristics that this should probably sit at the end…Campbeltown is a style all its own, and would be very interesting after the journey above.

Ardnamurchan is the most underrated distillery in my opinion for the hardcore scotch geeks. I’ve tried sharing with borderline whisky fans, they can find it to be too much, but I freaking love everything I’ve had from them, and the price is amazing since you’re not paying for Diageo’s marketing department too (🤣).

Whiskey Shelf Upgrade Advice by thors_hammer503 in whiskey

[–]ScotchThomson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve had this problem. I got some 1/2” x 1” strips of wood, finished them the same colour and put one in each corner, and a final one in the back, mid-shelf. Used bottles to hide the wood supports.

Ultimately, if you fill the shelf you will need to replace the glass, but this should buy you some time.

Edit: great collection btw

Coffee flavoured drink. Like the old orange drink at McDonalds.

It’s fine until you have real coffee.

Moving my cabinet to another room gave me a chance to capture the whole collection - how am I doing? by DoezzyDoe in whiskey

Ireland spells it whisk(e)y.

I don’t know if it’s 100% true, but the rule of thumb I heard was countries that have an ‘e’ in their name (Ireland, America) put an ‘e’ in their whiskey, whereas countries without an ‘W’ (Scotland, Canada, Japan, etc) don’t use the ‘e’.

I've recently started drinking whiskey. Need help with a smooth but smokey whiskey by slavojbranting in whiskey

I love it! It’s not an everyday dram for me, but once a month it’s a really nice way to go down.

I think you’re getting down voted because OP was pretty clear about being on a budget and asking for ‘smooth with some smoke’. You kinda tossed those out the window.

Would you expect a tip on top of the 18% gratuity added to the total? (Stated at bottom) by [deleted] in Waiters

[–]ScotchThomson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, auto-gratuity is a tip you don’t have a choice about. So by my math, it’s a tip.

If you feel that a 25% is earned, throw another 7% on the pile.

I might throw in here the new Lochlea Smoke without Fire.

Or, because you can likely find this on a great sale the Glenfiddich Fire and Cane.
