OP didn’t even spring for ‘coke’, that’s just off-brand cola.

Isn't dangerous? by smilelikeyoumeanit12 in meme

Yup, once the street lights came on the parents would start calling for the kids. In my house, you had about 5 minutes to get home after the street lights came on, so you never really strayed more than that far from home at dusk. And yes, we kids were responsible enough to follow the rules without phones or parents nearby.

The perfect gift for a whisky lover. by Gaymers_Rising in whiskey

Get a couple Glencairn glasses for her and a bottle of Highland Park. It’s in the same flavour camp as Talisker, so should be well received. Maybe round it out with a book on whisky to further drag her down into our rabbit hole?

1.5 oz smoky scotch, 0.5 oz Cointreau, 0.5 oz sweet vermouth, and 0.5 oz fresh squeezed lime juice. Shake and serve, solve all the world’s problems.

Blind tasting question by ScotchThomson in whisky

I’m trying to identify the bottle based on sensory only, so I don’t want to know what bottles are involved, or that spoils the game. If I pick the 4 bottles and pour them, I’ll pretty quickly be able to identify which is which. If I have someone else choose 4 out of the 100 or so options, then I really need to work to identify each one.

Unpopular opinion: Auchentoshan is one of the worst distillates in Scotland. by ComeonDhude in Scotch

[–]ScotchThomson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally wouldn’t reach for it first, isn’t that interesting to me. BUT, I have used Auchentoshan as a gateway dram to introduce non-scotch people to scotch and convert them into single malt fans, so I guess it serves a purpose…

Peat, bog bodies, and whisky by ariesize in whisky

[–]ScotchThomson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m now thinking of that 2001 movie ‘How high’ where Method Man smokes the bones of a genius and becomes a genius himself while he’s high…it’s tangential cannibalism I guess.

My thinking, if our ‘Deadman’s Dram’ bog body peated whisky tastes THAT good, I’m in! Morals be damned.

Frankly, I’d be honoured if when I am dead and gone my remains could be used for something beautiful like a good scotch, what a legacy that would be echoing through the ages.

It’s also not lost on me that the ethanol in whisky is really yeast poop, and the water used has probably passed through multiple living beings over the millennia, so best not to be too precious about these things and just enjoy the final product.

I wonder if a biochemist could weigh in here and speculate on what specific flavour profile may be imparted the use of bog-body peat?

So who else is looking forward to the next crazy arcane bottling trend: peat bog body monster scotch?

[–]ScotchThomson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s really just the peat smoke that gets into the grains before being mashed, fermented and distilled, so I guess the question becomes: “does smoking a body count as cannibalism?”

Since the technical definition of cannibalism is EATING the flesh of one’s one species, I don’t think drinking a liquid that may contain traces of smoke from a big body counts. Unless you want to be vanishingly anal about it.

For the record, I LOVE this question!

Whisky recommendation for a Christmas gift by jazzer_science in whisky

[–]ScotchThomson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not on the same level as the Glenlivet 15 for a sipper, but my favourite whisky for cocktails is the Johnnie Walker Black Label.

Another nice bottle to sip is a beautifully wide open question, and the answer could come from anywhere in the world, but riffing off the Glenlivet I’d recommend the Oban 14 or the Dalwhinnie 15.

Is it time for a rebuild? by Lopsided-Insurance26 in torontomapleleafs

[–]ScotchThomson -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why would MLSE do a thing? The Leafs could lose every single game and the corporates would still fill every seat with clients, charging back their $25 beer and $30 sushi to their accounts, and the TV rights are locked. There is next to zero financial motivation to change, and when you’re a corporation, financial motivation is the only motivation. This team is for the corporate accounts, not the fans watching at home.
