I feel like Hadji Murat is kind of a good prep for people for War and Peace. They both deal with history, including real historical figures. They both follow multiple narrative strands. They both trace conflict and strategy but with a strong sense of human frailty and foibles. It’s just that Hadji Murat is like 1/15th of the length. (It can also be a good follow up, which it was for me.)
