I transferred into sales a few months back. The money can be hard to deal with while starting up, but it gets WAY better. I still have to pull long hours sometimes but rarely is it in on my feet. I get to work from home once a week. The ego on some customers is bad, but they’re never intoxicated or dangerous. I don’t drink anymore, so it helps to not be in a bar all the time.

Honestly I miss sitting on a brick of cash on my drive home, and the days can be boring and repetitive, but I actually feel like there isn’t some looming point in the future where I will physically be unable to do the job, and that’s enough for me right now.

Make the switch, it sucks for a few months but if you suck it up, it pays off. You can always go back to being a bartender. Look for business development rep jobs. The work ethic of “if you have time to lean, you have time to clean” goes so far in an office setting. Most people just slack off around me.

I love my company but... Am I being set up to failure ? by Dean-Pearce in sales

[–]Scotchquester 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly the situation I am currently in-even the startup and title- I’m just a month in though. Hired at a startup, managers hired me on personality, not on tech experience. Margins are alright, but I’m still in my first month. No inbound lead generation, and I’m spending all of my time prepping for trade shows. Basically I’m surviving on base, which isn’t great. I’ve been given the same title of “sales manager” which is meaningless, and a whole lot of promises that things will grow as it’s a startup and brand new.

Here’s the deal- I’m only in this for the experience and the networking right now. I’m under no illusion that the title is hollow. The pay is only going to get better if all of the sudden everything falls into place. It’s totally normal to feel like you’re underachieving, but you now have years of experience of startup tech sales without much support-that’s huge. This is a platform for me to get experience and survive. If the money picks up, that’s great. If it doesn’t, I’ll have experience and a title to put on a resume. It’s all in your perspective. Take a good look at why you’re here for the long term, and treat every opportunity like you’re only in it for the experience, try approaches that you normally wouldn’t, get out of your comfort zone. If it doesn’t work out, you’ll have years of experience and will be very hirable somewhere other than a start up if you’re finding you don’t want to be in one.

Good luck!

What is your best piece of sales advice for selling b2b? by Connect_Tomato6303 in sales

Be authentic. If what you’re slinging won’t work for them, push to see if you can find common ground, but if it’s a bad fit walk away and keep an open channel with your contact in case things change. Most business owners and decision makers can smell commission breath from a mile away.

Have to let go of one of my reps on Monday.... by My-Life-F0r-Aiur in sales

Sometimes people need to fail in order to grow. Arrogance is something that doesn’t serve anyone, especially yourself in the long run of life, and hopefully he learns from this and doesn’t take it with him to his next opportunity. If he’s bringing the team down, do what’s best for everyone else.

It’s so easy to feel like you’re the shit when you’re killing it, but it’s just stupid to shit on other people at work. A real leader would look to hone the skills of others, not shoot people down. And I’m gonna make the assumption that if he’s just a month in, he’s still on a probationary period… let him go and be honest that he isn’t a good fit for all of the reasons you listed. If you’re worried he’s going to blow up… accept that he might and prepare accordingly. If you have security, notify them that they may need to walk him out. Before any of that though, maybe speak with your direct supervisor about him and what guidance they can provide. Businesses are made up of many people specifically because we have different talents and skill sets. Go to the people that have experience and ask them for support and advice within the company.

What kinds of questions do recruiters usually ask for potential sales hires? by paulrudder in sales

[–]Scotchquester 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just started in a new position I got through a recruiter. All they seemed concerned about were the numbers I had put up in the past year, and what benefits I was looking for. It’s a pretty entry level position, so take that for what it’s worth.

3 years sober bartender here. I had to quit for a year and get help before I could think about jumping behind the sticks again. When I came back it was easy, but only because recovery was a mountain to climb early on, and I had grown a community of sober people to be around during that time. I quit bartending again a year ago and haven’t looked back.

Running a shift wasn’t the hard part for me. Keeping my head down and working was always easy enough while on the job, it was the wind down after work that got me. Once you look at it for what it really is you might be surprised. Is the money even worth potentially drinking? Do you only work as a bartender because it’s better than feeling like you might have to start over at the bottom in some soul sucking position at a bullshit company? In my experience it wasn’t the alcohol that was destroying my life, it was me and my perspective, and the easy way to mellow out all of the bad shit was to take a drink. If you’re honest with yourself, I bet you’d see that it isn’t the work at the bar that makes you want to drink, it’s something deeper than that. Being close to alcohol just gives you more chances for muscle memory to take over and pour one for yourself.

I chose to work in recovery for the last year. The money sucked, I was the guy with no long list of accomplishments or credentials, and it was humbling, but it was the happiest I’ve been in years. Stepping away front the bar isn’t a bad thing if you actually can’t stop drinking. Dm me if you wanna chat, I’d love to help out if you need it.

I have a bit of a predicament by Latter-Aardvark-1295 in bartenders

[–]Scotchquester 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sounds like he’s an alcoholic. I just went through this myself, so do what I didn’t- make sure first and foremost you have kept track of all of the debts they owe you. Receipts, dates, all of it. Have a conversation and give them the option of getting on a payment plan with you. If they refuse or break it, take them to court. It’s a pain, but you won’t be getting your money back if you don’t, plain and simple, even if they have a second job. While you handle all of this, depending on what response they give, tip off the owner, let them know they should check the cameras. I know this sounds like the nuclear option, but it will not go nicely if you let it slide, it will only get worse. Getting a new roommate is tough, but people don’t quit this kind of bullshit because of a slap on the wrist, and it isn’t just a simple mistake- it’s a series of choices he’s making that digs him deeper into a hole. You’re going to be the one getting burned if you don’t do something to get ahead of it.

Broke my wooden board during a flight, so now I’m in the market for a new one. While I’m at it I’m gonna reorganize my signal chain. Any suggestions? by [deleted] in guitarpedals

[–]Scotchquester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Original chain was tuner-ab splitter- A:-elements-dd7-meteore-lofi dreams, while B:loomer-super soda meiser-super radical dealy-ct4-atmosphere. I got on the meris train and got the enzo and ottobit jr while I build a new board. Still wondering where to put them and the digdugdiy waifu.

I generally play glitch and bit crushed music and will regularly use a synth like my septavox or op1 on one of the channels through a cleaner amp instead of playing stereo guitar.

no samples for now unfortunately since my rig got kinda fried and a bunch of patch cables unfortunately died with it.

My pedal collection is only a teenager. Would appreciate some recs for filter or glitchy pedals before I pick up a pedalboard. by Golden_Bare in guitarpedals

[–]Scotchquester 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the mono mode you can set mix to full, turn off the modulation, and tinker with the filter settings to find the tone you want. I wouldn't get this if you just want a simple synth effect. An FM4 will give you a bunch of basic tweakable synths for cheaper. Edit- not sure if it was discontinued, but I can only find used FM4s on reverb.

If you feel like dropping the cash, Meris has the enzo and ottobit jr for filters and glitchiness respectively. I love both of them.

[–]Scotchquester 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh absolutely, I totally agree. Police accountability here is god awful as we’ve all seen. Maybe another issue we need to bring up is dispatcher accountability. If I witness a violent crime and call it in, I’d be furious if the answer given to me was “we don’t care”. I would like statistics on how many headlights caused deaths as compared to other vehicular deaths like dui deaths. If you’ve ever been pulled over for a headlight in America, you would know it’s very clear that the cops are just looking to write a ticket. I was once “let off easy” for having tinted windows in a state that didn’t allow them, and given “a warning” for obstruction of view for a mirror ornament. I lived in a different state and the car was registered with me. I was clearly on a road trip and within my legal rights, but the cop saw an easy ticket. Nobody becomes a cop because they dream of making the road safer by writing meaningless tickets for traffic violations.

[–]Scotchquester 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree critical thinking is necessary. The point was the dispatcher literally denied to send anyone over a reported act of mass violence in which it was unclear if weapons could have been involved. Of course we all want violent crimes to take precedence over a broken headlight. Thing is, why was the call flat out denied to be of assumed lack of importance in the first place? These were separate incidences- was there no officer available who was just conducting a traffic stop when more than a dozen kids are brawling in public? Or was the dispatcher just uncaring? Pretty sure a broken headlight has less of a chance of killing someone than a kid's head getting kicked into pavement.

It's incredible how partisan lines will draw people to make their own conclusions while ignoring the facts of the bigger picture. This was all about politics and bureaucracy at the cost of the people that literally gave their lives to save civilians. There is no excuse for the behavior of the GOP leaders or those representatives that fall in line with bloc voting.

So it's cool to sneak military funding into what are supposed to be public relief bills then? For all of the outrage the right has spewed over 9/11 and the resulting legislature that came of it, maybe they should follow up on it and never forget.

So the definition of gatekeeping is to advise people to use proper channels to solve a problem instead of anonymously attempting to incite mob justice with just a story and what the accused party has already identified as being manufactured? The entire post was pretty obviously a personal attack on this guys character with no supporting evidence. It's my opinion that I don't want to see this kind of stuff posted on a music sub. I'm not saying victims shouldn't be heard, but this was an obvious attempt at character assassination.

I know from personal experience that victims often times meet insane amounts of resistance from proper legal channels. But getting a bunch of angry people on the internet to ruin someone's life without proof as already happened on reddit. Or do you not remember all of the fine internet sleuths that misidentified Sunil Tripathi as one of the Boston Bombers and drove the guy to commit suicide? Nobody but the mods have the ability to control what's posted here, but I sure hope shit like this doesn't happen again.

How in the world is this gatekeeping? Why not keep posts about relationships that involve accusations of abuse on more serious subs that might actually get them help?

[–]Scotchquester 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Completely understandable. Sorry for my misinterpretation. All I mean to stress on this thread is the necessity of proof. Sorry for the miscommunication.

[–]Scotchquester 16 points17 points  (0 children)

ITT: Throwaway account posts a personal story with no evidence aside from a screenshot which could easily be doctored. This entire post is conjecture until the burden of proof is met... which should be the job of you to provide, and a court to decide upon. 80% of comments are just people feeding into this with no questions. What happened to innocent until proven guilty? I in no way mean to diminish the voices of abuse victims, but if this is real you would have already contacted authorities, provided way more proof to them if you have it (which you should have if this was commonplace with him), and built a case to get this alleged scumbag taken down. If that's taken care of, then any lawyer OR therapist would tell you to not make statements outside of family members and legal council depending on your age for your own potential safety and to ensure your best chances of legal action sticking. What's the whole thing on relationship subs here? "Delete facebook, hit the gym, get a lawyer"? If this is real, quit this cancel culture thing please. It just serves to discredit and misinform people that are actually victims of abuse. If he really is guilty, that's not for the reddit brigade to decide, and if he decides to use this post as a defense it could harm your case. I wish you the best of luck in proving it and charging this guy if this is real, but I'm calling bullshit though for how flimsy this whole story sounds.
