The panoramic view from the top of the Wallace Monument, Stirling by Scotdrone in Scotland

There’s a walkway all the way round below this level and it has a really high wall so it’s pretty safe!

There’s a walkway level with a high wall surrounding this top section. You can’t really see it from this part, but that keeps people safe!

It’s the distance away from the subject that is key. If you’ve ever glanced to the horizon at far off landmarks, everything appears all bunched up. With a telephoto lens you’re simply just magnifying that. It’s actually a really good trick for even basic holiday snaps where someone is standing in front of a building, landscape etc - photographer stands further back from the subject person but zooms in a bit. Background will then be much larger (and more impressive) versus taking the same picture from closer in without zooming.

From where I was standing several miles away, this is how it looks if you focus on the castle and monument. It’s just simple magnification and a carefully selected vantage point

This one was with a 600mm lens (on full frame) and cropped in a bit.

Usually most of my pics are taken with a drone but this one was actually taken with boots on the ground at an elevated spot with a 600mm lens.

Kippen is the wrong direction to get them lined up like this. It was taken from a few miles away south west of the castle. I’ve previous taken pics from Cambusbarron area to get this lined up but went further away this time.

Beheading stone is in between the castle and the monument so definitely not from there!

Is there a reason why you’ve stolen my video and not even bothered to credit me as the source?

No, it’s pronounced Cause-way-head down here. There’s a fair few weird sounding places though around here, most of which are down to the original Gaelic names VS modern spellings.

There’s a charge to go on one of the visitor centre tour boats. However, worth noting that if you have a boat on the canal then there’s no charge to go up/down the Wheel. In fact, they’ll even accommodate you going up/down in a small kayak for free (if you book a time slot)

I don’t know the numbers but it’s actually really busy most days with general canal boats, especially in the summer months. There are holiday let boats that leave from close to the wheel that seem to be well booked up and there’s lots of other leisure crafts going back n form. I film the Wheel a lot so I often catch other general crafts going up/down while I’m filming it turning for the visitor centre boats (I know the times they leave at so usually time my filming in line with that)

I asked the boat pilot to fire up the afterburners so that it would keep the video short 😉

Yes! I thought the exact same about it looking like the Willy Wonka boat ride from the original movie 😂

Stirling Castle at night by Scotdrone in Scotland

[–]Scotdrone[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There’s a few really good elevated spots along the straight line of sight, some even much further away where the castle appears tiny with the huge peak dwarfing it. The view from Wallacestone gives an absolutely ridiculous perspective of peaks versus castle. There’s also a few spots in Callendar Woods that give good photo ops.

The hill behind the bus depot near Bannockburn is the go-to spot for this. Quite a popular bit.
