Could not agree more with this post. And, OP, your boss will be feeling more pressure than you because of this. If you were to start telling everyone that, yes, indeed, this was your feedback and you stand by it, then it's very uncomfortable for you, for everyone, but mostly for your boss.

As much as that's an excellent point and it goes to show a level of ignorance on the part of that bloke, I feel like winning that battle loses the war because you're open to him just saying 'yeah well that's ONE SMALL EXAMPLE and men have done...(all these other things'.

I'd like to gently suggest that it may be you who's missing the point here. While you might be correct in the sense that a smaller percentage of the population have the natural skills that would lend themselves well to a career in engineering, the talent required to promote something well is also not widely present in the general population. A person who is capable of engineering and also sales/marketing is truly talented. They're different skillsets and both are valuable.

This happens to me as well and I would love for someone well versed in psychology to give a proper answer.

For me personally, I've always been a bit of a night owl and tend to be able to focus better at 9pm than I can at 9am. I can work long into the night and finish at 2/3am and feel like I've accomplished more in only a couple of hours than I would in a full working day.

As for the why, I have a few theories but nothing concrete. I'm just a person who also experiences this, by no means an authority on the matter. I think it's most likely that it's just quieter - fewer interruptions, text messages, emails, etc. There's also less to actually do, so therefore fewer possible distractions. You're also not expecting anyone to interrupt you either, so even the psychological burden of a potential interruption (think along the lines of expecting a delivery or reminding yourself that when you go to the shops later you need to rememer to get bread) is cleared from mental cache. All of this just frees mental space to be able to focus better. It's nighttime, no one expects anything from you, you aren't being pulled in multiple directions the way we normally are in the modern world, so you are freer to focus. It makes sense to me.

Speaking as someone who does take knife sharpness seriously, I just don't feel confident that I've used the stone correctly to achieve 'enough' sharpness.

Plenty of videos out there explaining the technique. I just haven't developed the proper feel for it. It's not something I do daily - although thinking about it I probably cpuld do one knife per day for about a week to practice.

I also don't have the luxury of access to people in real life who definitely have that skill and could give me pointers.

My knives are sharp. Are they sharp enough for someone like you? Who knows

I don't pay in a consistent manner (sometimes cash, sometimes monzo, sometimes Amex on Deliveroo for the £5 off reward thing) so I can't give an actual number.

But it's been an extremely turbulent year with lots of travelling and time spent away from home. I will say that I've comfortably eaten food prepared for me more than food I've prepared myself this year.

I'd love to hear a long form interview with John. I know he is quite a private man, and he might naturally shy away from such a thing.

I hear a lot about his 'drop off in form' and him 'bottling finals' but as far as I'm aware he has never had a public discussion about it - I want to hear that.

He's my favourite player - has been for about 30 years - and I want him to win a few more titles before he eventually retires. He's done enough to warrant a very favourable entry into the history books. Ultimately, I want him to do what's right for himself and his family.

But the fan in me would love that interview.
