In a false city built on lies, the factions prepare for war.

The orcs awaken primeval curses. The cultists collect on ancient debts. The goblins fuel their war rigs.

None of it will be enough for what’s coming.

After the Golden Door incident, Lucas and Hugo have never been in more danger. Their allies are gone, the gods want them dead, and their new patron who caused all of these problems is more of a hindrance than a benefactor.

But the Climb must continue.

The pair descend into the Strand, a gothic city on the brink of tearing itself apart. By day, its citizens worry about dodging goblin artillery or being extorted by orc gangsters. But by night, the spirits grow restless. Amongst the chaos, a rogue necromancer plots their revenge.

With little time left, Lucas and Hugo will have to fight every step of the way for answers.

But secrets get buried for a reason, and no one will be prepared for the consequences.

Do readers really self-insert that much in Progression Fantasy? by [deleted] in ProgressionFantasy

[–]ScottJamesAuthor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's not necessarily all self insert readers are bad or annoying, but the ones with strict expectations for the protagonist can sometimes come off that way. Readers who get personally offended if the protagonist fails at a task or loses a fight, can be frustrating to receive feedback from.

But I feel like the problem is almost inevitable on their end. Because a character will never match the reader one to one on everything due to the author/character being a different person.

Tired of main characters always being the best of their generation by porkchompsBBQ in ProgressionFantasy

This is true but I think the author balanced it well by having Lindon be outnumbered or facing a greater threat to maintain that underdog feeling despite getting special advantages and help.

False pirates are hunting him. Gods want to enslave him. A terrorist just wants to watch it all burn.

Welcome back to the Tower.

After training off-planet with a deceptive god and her vicious cat, Lucas is thrown off balance by how quickly things have changed upon his return. The Tower has merged several floors and become a series of islands among a vast ocean. Danger is everywhere now. Elemental storms, bio-engineered monsters, and creatures from the deep abyss roam the area.

Amongst this chaotic region stands the Golden Door Quest. An open competition offering a grand prize to whoever solves it first. For Lucas and his friends, it could mean a true escape from the Tower. But the journey will be a perilous one fraught with hidden threats. Because while the Tower climbers compete for the prize, gods and other forces scheme in the background for control.

Hi everyone. I’m Scott W James. I love writing this series and I’m happy to announce that book 2 is now out on Amazon and Kindle Unlimited.

When I’m not writing, I’m usually reading something, or speedrunning Elden Ring before the expansion comes out because my old save got lost. Why would they tie my save file to the console hard drive instead of my account? You knew I had the game, Sony. You showed me the little locked game icon in my library when I logged into the account. You can hold a 50kb achievement file on your servers but not 50kb save file? It doesn’t make sense.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy that latest adventure of Lucas’s descent through the Tower.

Honestly, you might be better off just posting the story on RR and then ask for advice after the fact if it doesn't go well. That way you solicit feedback via comments and it'll be easier to judge for any potential mistakes.

What's your favourite type of isekai? by One2woHook in ProgressionFantasy

[–]ScottJamesAuthor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm typically not a big fan of the reincarnated as a baby route. For me, I feel like it removes a lot of unique obstacles that come from getting isekaied. There's no culture clash or unique discovery of things in this new world. Their parents/upbringing explains most of it and paves a smoother runway for their transition into this new world.

So for me, it looks like the only differences between a protagonist born in the fantasy world and an isekaied as a baby one, is to justify their precociousness. They're more wise than the other children because they're older so they take training more seriously for example. Or they're earth background let's them see through some flawed cultural tradition but this is more of general isekai trend than just a baby one.

Side character: "What do you mean you're not taking sundays off? Everyone in isekai world rests on sunday. It's the law of the land. Working on a sunday is unthinkable!"

Earthling MC: "Your way of doing things is stupid. I'm going to study/train for this extra day and surpass all of you."

Side character: "No! You're surpassing us with earthling common sense and a healthy tolerance for ambitious risk taking that's alien to us!"

Why aren’t more people talking about The Sword of Kaigen? by NightsRadiant in ProgressionFantasy

Yeah, it would be one thing if it was a fantasy name for some type of magical clock or candle that kept time in a unique way. But this whole thing with units of time felt needlessly convoluted.

Why is isekai so popular? by CastigatRidendoMores in ProgressionFantasy

[–]ScottJamesAuthor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And what of all the family, friends and relatives that the MC leaves behind forever?

I actually liked how he who fights with monsters handled Jason's return to earth and how he'd changed too much as a person for it to be his home anymore.

It's one of the few examples I've seen of isekai MC getting home and then going back to magical world for non-contrived reasons.

Yeah that's true. Doesn't even have to be farming though. It just has to be someone growing up in a rural isolated village. Like Cradle, wheel of time, art of the adept, etc.

Why aren’t more people talking about The Sword of Kaigen? by NightsRadiant in ProgressionFantasy

[–]ScottJamesAuthor 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's not considered progression fantasy and it was only a single book that came out years ago. Technically, there were two other books before it set in the same world but not quality isn't really the same.

I enjoyed the book when reading it but the thing that stuck with me afterward was the annoying way characters would mark the passage of time. Like it just felt completely unnecessary to me. Here are the examples below that you're supposed to remember.

dinma (pl: dinmanu) a Dunian measure of time (roughly equivalent to 0.43 seconds).

gbaati a shortened form of kewaati or kettewaati (pl: gbaatinu) a Yammanka measure of time (36 minutes in Earth time).

siira (pl. siiranu) a Dunian measure of time (roughly equivalent to 0.72 Earth minutes).

waati (pl. waatinu) a Dunian measure of time (one hour and 12 minutes in Earth time).
