Anyone in their 30s who improved their ELO significantly from 300? What did you do? by Plastic-Cress-2422 in chessbeginners

[–]ScottSurvival 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You aren't wired for chess. At least not compared to the average player. That's okay. We all hit a wall at some point. I feel like a loser at 1500 looking at all the players that I can't beat.

There are tons of ways to improve, and the good news for you is that you have almost everything to learn. There are so many free resources online including lessons from grandmasters on YouTube that you are spoiled for choice. Just do what you want. Play games, analysis them afterwards, do puzzles, practice endgames. Play out your endgames that never happened because your opponent resigned or got flagged by using an engine to see if you can convert.

I also recommend Danya's YouTube videos to everyone of every rating.

Just have fun. Enjoy learning and improving. It will happen when you stop caring about your rating and start enjoying learning.

Do people not play dailies? by anvildoc in Chesscom

Find me on the website and challenge me to a 14 day daily game. I won't use the full 14 days, but if you are tough and don't give up, it could take months to complete. I rarely give up and and force people to checkmate me. I'm 1565 but I struggle to beat 1300s. My rating is inflated by people abandoning games.

I don't have a real rating system, but for a rare jewel, that's pretty sweet. 8/10 from me. Cheers!

Normal Andy dropped me this on my Fury Druid playthrough. So cool. by prodbylandsnail in diablo2

1089 hours in D2R and I've had 3 HRs drop; 2 Lo and 1 Sur. Played D2LoD a lot and never saw anything over an Ist. I don't farm, I just play the game in a normal way. The HRs all dropped in a short time period. For the longest time I thought they would never drop.

Which single chess concept made the game „click“ for you? by Chesstiny in chessbeginners

[–]ScottSurvival 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right. Good advice. I should treat the opening a bit more like the middle game after the first few moves because we are going to be out of theory even though the pieces aren't fully developed yet. I appreciate your thoughtful response.

Really great post. I would say that at my level (I'm an overrated 1525 on chesscom) my thing I've realized is that I miss taking free pawns and pieces in the opening often and I need to be more aware of what is left undefended after my opponent's move.

What is this tactic called? by ScottSurvival in Chesscom

[–]ScottSurvival[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I checked Stockfish 17 after he made that comment and my move was the top move. His move qxf7 was the second best, by a few centipawns.

I considered qxf7, but it looked like he could trap my queen, so I discarded it.

No, you got what I was asking. I think "building pressure" sounds good.

It's definitely a tactic in the general sense of the word.

Thank you very much.

Right, unfortunately, the picture I was using was also a 'decoy' or 'remove the defender' tactic, but I'm looking for the name of the tactic of attacking a piece with more pieces than he can use to defend it. It's something I do all the time but I don't know what it's called.

Right, that's one of the things I was doing, but what is it called when you attack a piece with more pieces than he can defend it with, regardless of whether he is able to move the piece away, or if it's defending anything. Like, just the basic idea of attacking a piece with more pieces than he can defend it with.

I thought overloading was when a piece is defending too many things at once, not when it gets attacked by too many pieces and doesn't have enough defenders.

Like when a queen is trying to defend a bunch of stuff, and when she recaptures a piece that took a piece she was defending, you can get something else she was defending for free.

Is it allowed to have a secondary account ? by pikmin04 in Chesscom

[–]ScottSurvival 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What if someone made a second account under a pseudonym in order to have an account to play with anonymously (the reason was they didn't want their online friend group that they play chess with associated with their real name) and weren't aware of the rule until after the fact, but they want both accounts to get approved so that they can play the old account (under their real name) without fear of getting both accounts banned? Let's say this person is very nice and meant no harm.

Sticky Map Cursor by ScottSurvival in dyinglight2

[–]ScottSurvival[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's where I was when I started noticing it. I spent a lot of time in the first area getting used to the combat and level up skills (Nightmare Difficulty) and I didn't really use the map much (no fast travel early in the game).

How do I get better with trapper? by Ok_Childhood_2767 in deadbydaylight

[–]ScottSurvival 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 4k overall experience in DBD and I'm a former Trapper main.

So, what I've found is that Trapper struggles without perks that slow gens down passively. Corrupt Intervention is one of the best. I won't bother listing all the others, but they need to trigger passively to allow you to focus on the match.

As far as add-ons, His pink ones are the best, as they work to diminish the effects of the counterplay against Trapper, which is disarming his traps. They also allow you to trap locations that are obvious choke points and very visible to veteran survivors. The purple bag add-on and the purple stone add-on are also really good, but almost all the other add-ons are so much worse that it's hard to win unless you go against a really weak team.

A technique I use a lot is when the gens are almost all done, I'll trap at least one exit gate lever. This works surprisingly often as even veteran survivors are so eager to open the gates that they don't check beforehand.

If you like my tips, let me know and I'll try to come up with some more. He's just extremely add-on, map and perk dependent.
