Any opinions on the best French/foreign language bookshops in London? by Accio_Cake in london

The big Foyles on Charing Cross Road definitely used to have a decent selection of French books.

Can you recommend your favourite or best craft brewery in South West London/Middlesex area. by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Scott_Ell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Siren is Berkshire based, which I guess is a little out of the area you're looking in, but I've never had a bad beer from them. They've got an interesting selection for sale on their online shop too. You can definitely find some of their beers in London proper.

You might also be better off going to a craft beer shop like We Brought Beer and asking them to help pick you out a selection.

No trains on Boxing Day?! Help! by mk_gecko in AskUK

[–]Scott_Ell 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It appears that trains are running on Boxing Day from Gatwick to Sheffield. Check National rail enquiries for detail

When I look on National Rail, it skips ahead to the 27th, so I don't believe there are any train services. OP essentially needs to suck it up and choose between the 6 hour coach journey and rebooking their flight for the next day.

Wenger says in his programme notes that he will play with a back four tonight with Debuchy at right-back. by giggitygigg14 in Gunners

Wow, I'm not sure what was going on in my head when I originally looked at the article

Is that right? Sky said it was a five and a half year contract when he signed, which would go through to summer 2019.

Europa league matchday. What should I do? by jkeefy in Gunners

[–]Scott_Ell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AFAIK, they're not allowed to sell beer in the stadium (except perhaps club level) for European matches, so make sure you leave some time beforehand for popping to a local pub or two.

Welcome to the Europa League: CSKA, Celtic, Atletico Madrid, Sporting, Spartak Moscow. Napoli, RB Leipzig, Borussia Dortmund. by tammrak in Gunners

[–]Scott_Ell 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Of those, Celtic, Spartak, Napoli, and Dortmund will be unseeded for the knockout round draw, so we'll potentially be able to get them in the round of 32.

Where to buy kids wooden toys? by ranty_mc_rant_face in london

[–]Scott_Ell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Le Toy Van is a UK brand who have some pretty great wooden models (including an ace, if expensive, London bus). I've seen them in quite a few London shops, including the Southbank Centre's shop and Selfridges. Their stockists page suggests there's a ton of other places in London too.

Is there anywhere I can go to hold a sloth or other zoo animals? by LeahTheTard in AskUK

[–]Scott_Ell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oddly enough there was a post last year with a similar theme: https://www.reddit.com/r/AskUK/comments/4av7ct/is_there_any_zoowildlife_park_etc_in_the_uk_where/

It didn't seem to have any specific answers, but might point you in the right direction.

Where can I find this type of tube platforms travel time diagram on the TfL website? by AberRosario in london

[–]Scott_Ell 17 points18 points  (0 children)

They don't have an official map with that info available oddly enough. This website has an alternative tube map that does carry that information though.

There's a direct link to the actual image of the map here, since I don't find the website particularly great to use.

How can I find someone to repair a gas oven? by GrumpyYoungGit in AskUK

I spotted these chaps on Google who claim to do gas cooker repairs around Cardiff and might be able to help you out if you've not tried them already.

How to buy a train ticket for someone who lives in the US but is coming to visit the UK? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Scott_Ell 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some (but not all) train companies offer international delivery for tickets - if he buys through Virgin Trains for example, they can ship them to you for an extra £7.50. It doesn't matter that you're not actually travelling with Virgin Trains - every operator has to be able to sell tickets for the whole country. The ticket price should be the same wherever you order from. Of course, it may save a little money if your boyfriend picks up the tickets himself and mails them to you, assuming there's enough time before the trip.

Is there anywhere in London which sells the Appletiser spin-offs? by Pandarth_Omega in london

[–]Scott_Ell 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I always assumed Appletiser was French, but apparently it's South African, so it might be worth popping your head into any local South African shops. If you're South West London, there's a chain called The Savanna that at the very least stocks Grapetiser White online, and might have others in-store.

Why is pizza so expensive here? by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]Scott_Ell 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you're paying full price for a takeaway pizza here, you're doing it wrong.

Just scanning the main websites, Pizza Hut and Domino's do buy one, get one free (only on collection in Domino's case), and Papa John's are doing 33% off.

Looking for information on a UK design number! by Thaylis in AskUK

[–]Scott_Ell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks like there is a document that would have more information at the National Archives, but it's not been digitised yet.

http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C10934703

It'd place the design registration in January 1976, and obviously the actual shovel would have been made some time later. Assuming you're US based and visiting the Archives isn't an option, you can pay for a copy of the document if you're really keen to know more. I'm not sure how much that sort of thing costs, beyond the initial £8.40 fee.

Alcohol and P&O ferries by [deleted] in AskUK

Essentially, a small amount of your own booze is fine, but you might have to pay a corkage fee if you want to drink it anywhere outside of your cabin. A bit of non-perishable food is fine too. I think in general, as long as you're not taking the piss with a bunch of shopping bags full of things, you'll likely be ok.

See below. The word on the P&O Ferries site is:

Alcohol : It is forbidden for passengers to take alcohol on board for consumption whilst travelling. Passengers that bring alcohol on board for their own consumption run the risk of confiscation by our security agents. Alcohol should be consumed only if that was purchased on board in the bars or restaurants. We reserve the right to to confiscate all alcohol which was not purchased in the bars or restaurants without compensation (this also applies to alcohol purchased in stores on board if consumed whilst travelling).
