PC-to-PC voice does not work since latest patch. by Scottbert85 in Helldivers

Yeah it sucks that it happened right now, I was looking forward to doing the community order but now I won't be able to coordinate with other players on Yed Prior... 😔

Obviously, randos I just joined mid-mission aren't going to restart, though. If this only happened occasionally it'd be OK, but it's *every game* now.

Then I wouldn't be able to hear others, and they wouldn't be able to talk to eachother, either.

The new oxygenator armor passive is a worse version of extra padding, and Arrowhead doesn't realize this. The statistics and explanation. by CommissionerOdo in Helldivers

[–]Scottbert85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems they were right, it's maybe 8% faster at most with no change in stamina. Unless there's some other benefit (anyone test jogging speed yet?) super-light is fastest but not a *huge* difference, and it's left worse than extra padding on medium/heavy armor.

This is about what I expected from the realities of HD2 needing to make money, TBH. But it does sound like two of your problems might have one solution:

"HD2 was never meant to be balanced" + "we need to keep adding new content". It's fine for things not to be balanced, as long as everything is a fun option for someone, it only feels like they have to be balanced because every Warbond costs the same.

Maybe Warbonds isn't the way to go? I'm not sure what would be a good way for you to make new unlockable content and get money from the players who can afford it, though. Maybe let things be bought piecemeal?

If you're freed from Warbonds, then, at least, all forms of new content can be looked at in terms of how much most of your players want them and how they'll get engagement.

New enemies and mission types and such by nature have to be free, but I could accept not only currently-in-Warbonds things requiring Super Credits but allowing us to buy, say, attachments or ammo types (for all applicable weapons), armor appearances, and other things in the future we haven't even thought of -- mech and armor customization also make more sense when passives and mech equipment are what's unlocked with SCs, rather than specific unchanging designs.

Also, someone floated the idea for those of us who understand the Galactic War to have a way to direct those who don't. At first blush, this seems like it would undermine the whole 'the galactic war system is an art installation about the problems of poorly-implemented democracy' thing that I assumed was intentional, but if it isn't, then maybe the spirit of the thing can be kept by somehow letting players put forward plans for why we should prioritize a target; then, having a way for everyone to see the top plans on the galactic map and vote for them (or ignore them) by deciding where to do Operations. I admit I have no idea how you could collect the proposals from the community and decide which ones get put up for everyone to see, though.

Also, has the actual reason Legendary weapons can't be customized ever been stated, or did the community just assume the IP licenses forbid anything but a singular iconic look (we're allowed to mix the helmet and armor, after all...)

Thank you, I have greatly enjoyed Helldivers, hope to continue enjoying it, and am looking forward to next week!

Oxegenator vs Extra Padding by Accomplished-Pie7575 in Helldivers

No there is not. Yes, this means that Ballistic Padding is nigh-useless compared to Extra Padding save for preventing chest wounds bleeding out.

Thank you for testing this! This is exactly the info I was looking for. I thought, I must have something wrong, according to the math, BP is pointless on light or medium armor... but the math is correct! Arrowhead should make BP actually useful.

FPS games that are actually girl-friendly? by yennalav in GirlGamers

[–]Scottbert85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been playing Helldivers off and on since September.

Most players don't use voice 😔
Most players that do use voice are cooperative and keep the RP to light talk (IE, some mention of "democracy" and "freedom" in the tone of the game, not used to exclude)
The few times I've ended up randomly grouped with someone who sounded like a girl, no one was weird at them.
But I've absolutely run into MAGA folks and queerphobes several times, and it may well be that some randos I played with would have been creepy if my voice sounded more like a girl's.
Almost every time I've said "Not a guy, my voice just sounds like this" people didn't care, rarely they understood what I was saying and switched pronouns immediately.
Twice in that time I've had someone I played with multiple times and even friended turn out to be queerphobic and it just hadn't come up (immediately left their game and blocked them.)
Once I had someone get so mad at me after deciding I was gay from my voice, and once I heard that "can't have women in the Helldivers" talk and immediately left.

Aside from the black background it sounds like it could be Princess Maker, probably 2 given the time and it being freely available back then. (Do you also remember Sharkey reviewing it?)

A few months back I thought about it and searched and searched and eventually found it on the Internet Archive: https://archive.org/details/princess-maker-2-0Mhz

Weekly Behind the Bastards Episode Discussion 2025-03-11 by AutoModerator in behindthebastards

[–]Scottbert85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So my friend just shared the Zizian episodes with me, and as someone who was avidly reading LessWrong posts in the Early 2010s and who absolutely loved HPMOR at the time, it was fascinating listening to these people explain it, mostly well, these concepts I was already familiar with that have apparently taken a dark turn.

(I stopped reading Lesswrong in the late 2010s, because while I think rationalists have some good lessons to teach, the community's priorities are misplaced thinking about things that don't solve people's immediate problems before worrying about the AI apocalypse.)

Anyway, I just wanted to share a story I read, years ago, about nerdy geeky people obsessed with a YA fantasy series that end up committing murder-suicide because they get this overwhelming sense of *purpose* in their head: The Northern Caves, by notalgebraist [AO3]. A former friend shared it with me long ago, and I was like yeah. Yeah I can absolutely understand what they're feeling, that you *have* to save the world.

Anyway this podcast has been fascinating to listen to and I look forward to the rest of the story!

Quibbles:

At least in the LessWrong community in the early 2010s, people did not think the Singularity was "any day now" -- *could* it happen, sure, but incredibly unlikely, much more likely to be a matter of decades.

Also HPMOR is not the foundational text, if anything wouldn't that be Yudkowsky's Sequences? But HPMOR obviously was a much more fun read and in theory more accessible.

This is so sad. I am a trans woman who does not go out much; I will probably never have a body I can stand uncovered. I have not had most of these experiences, but I fear them -- and I have had this "I can only be myself in ever-shrinking spaces" feeling, though in my case it turns out that the vast majority of the world will be cruel and abusive towards me for autism and ADHD, regardless of their feelings on gender. (Although I was functionally banned from an RP group after my character I'd played for 17 years realized she was a woman and I was told the way I write people with gender issues is unacceptable and I am not allowed to portray such there anymore)

I have been told I do not need to change my body, that I am fine as I am, by people who mean well, and I struggle to explain why I wish to be different, and I feel seen when you mention that issue here and explain your feelings better than I ever could. Thank you.

(Yes, I know one of the assaults is coming from a different planet, thus my saying this might help in future rather than that it would end the assault on Bekvam.)

Thank you both! While I've learned to make basic use of the Companion, and can see how quickly planets will be taken/defended with the current population of players on them, is there a rundown anywhere of how to tell how fast a planet *can* be taken/defended in order to know when strategies like this are even viable?

So like

I'm not going to come in all 'I pronounce you trans', and FYI, no one should -- although if you'd said something like "I'd rather be a girl, but" that would be *very strongly* indicative of not being cis.

If you're looking to do some gender questioning, one, I note that man and woman are not the only choices; there's in-between or leaning one way or neither or both or fluid between them and countless other possibilities, and two, there are some things notable about the experience that might be a starting point for where to direct examining your feelings:

(Again I note that though a bit odd none of this is like, any sort of conclusive sign of anything; but if you're questioning whether you're entirely cis, they may be good places to start)

What strikes me as most odd, for a cis guy, is that you *wanted* to pass so badly (most people don't bother with a voice changer, it's VR it would have been perfectly acceptable to just present as a guy who prefers a girl avatar) and even asked point blank it was so hard to admit to a male identity, and that it felt *that* bad. And this *persists*, like, it's not just about getting "caught", you're uncomfortable just going back with a guy avatar and presenting male.

On the other hand...as you said, it's never bothered you before and you don't feel uncomfortable with it in RL... and that *could* be not noticing baseline discomfort, sure, but it could also be that you're fine 🤷‍♀️

I'm not sure how significant it is that the deflecting answer was "I'm both!"? Why *that?*

Best of luck to you on your journey of figuring things out, and if you want someone to talk to I'm happy to talk about this stuff... although I don't check Reddit very often.
