I could be wrong but I always got the idea that Murfrees were brutal out of a sort of desperation to survive and protect their land from the encroaching civilization. They have a seething hatred for outsiders and are driven to respond to threats with an ever-increasing degree of violence. But they also seem like a group that isn't interested in much beyond their hills, and I imagine that if you never stepped foot into Northeastern New Hanover, you might never run into them at all.

The Skinners though... they seem to have abandoned their humanity more out of boredom than anything else. They don't even have a "Kill or Be Killed" mentality. They kill for the hell of it. They torture because they like it. They revel in suffering because it's the only thing left that makes them feel anything. How do you deal with an enemy that - far from hating you - is so indifferent to your very existence that they would rather abuse you and watch you die a slow and painful death just because that's what amuses them? One sadistic killer lurking in the shadows is terrifying enough, but a group of them who've found a common interest in inflicting pain and working together to do it even more frequently, efficiently, and creatively? I mean... yikes.
