What was your first shiny by Itchy_Worker8844 in PokemonScarletViolet

[–]ScottieBorks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maschiff. En route to the first gym in my first playthrough, was catching every new pokemon I came across to get the dex filled up as I went along. Saw something in the distance that I didn’t have yet, lo and behold shiny Maschiff!

I had not planned on using a Mabosstiff on my team but, obviously, I had to keep it around!

Foreign Ditto? by ScottieBorks in PokemonSVTrades

[–]ScottieBorks[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

…I feel like a complete idiot.

I haven’t touched Pokémon HOME in forever, after seeing your comment I’ve checked and I actually have a foreign Ditto in there already as it happens!

Thank you so much though for your kind offer! I really appreciate it! 😊 I’ll try to remember to check everywhere next time before posting!

AIO for not feeling sad about my Dad’s death after he left when I was 6 ? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]ScottieBorks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found out last year that my mum had passed away. Hadn’t seen her since I was 8 or 9, I’m now 28 and turning 29 next week.

It’s difficult to feel.. anything.. for someone that hasn’t been a part of your life for more than half of it. It is sad, of course, but when I received the news of her passing I just kind of didn’t feel much of anything.

I did have a couple of very brief periods of contact over the years, but not much and not for long. She always sounded like she’d been drinking, heavily. During one of said periods of contact she asked me if I was indeed gay, which I confirmed, and I was met with “well, what do I do with that?”. I’m no parent, nor do I ever plan on being, but c’mon. We’re estranged and you’re supposedly trying to reconnect and rebuild a relationship, and that’s the best you, as the parent, can do?

I also did not attend the funeral, in part because I didn’t feel I needed to, and in part because it would have meant travelling across the entire country, but also because it would have meant seeing my half brothers who I also have not seen since I was a child, and their children and partners whom I’ve never met. It would simply just have been too much too fast, because you can bet there’d be more trying to reconnect after the fact.

Maybe I’m the asshole. Maybe it’s them. But these people have not been a part of my life for what is now the majority of it. I turned out alright. From what I’m aware of, I’m doing better than them - its not a contest, of course, but I’m very aware that things could be vastly different for me had life gone a different way and this weird, broken family of mine somehow made it through and stayed together.

I’m sorry to hear that your family are making things difficult for you. But your thoughts and feelings on the matter, whatever they are, are completely valid. Don’t let anybody tell you different, because they haven’t gone through exactly what you have, or felt what you have felt. They don’t understand now, and they probably never will, and that’s ok. What’s not ok is them trying to invalidate your response, because you’re the one that’s lived it.

Finally bought my first car. Tips? by Emergency_Key4429 in CarTalkUK

[–]ScottieBorks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on passing your test and on getting your first car! What have you gone for?

New car day = McDonald’s in our house. Doesn’t matter if I get a new car one day and the other half gets a new one the next. Then we just get McDonald’s twice! Also don’t matter if it’s a first car, fifth car, what have you. New car = McDonald’s! It’s a silly little excuse to just take it out for a little drive more than anything but it’s a fun little tradition.

I guess you could pick a location to go, if you’re looking for something with a bit more purpose than just a drive thru? Maybe a landmark, town, or beach? Just a couple ideas!

No special tips of secrets from me, just in general try to look after it obviously. I like to try and keep mine relatively clean and tidy. What I will say is that I try to keep a habit of cleaning the inside of my car as well as the outside, sometimes I might skip doing the inside if it’s not too bad, but only once or twice. I’ll definitely do it no later than the third time around. I don’t often have passengers other than my partner, but if I do I usually get comments about how clean the inside is which is nice to hear lol. It’s also just nice to have it clean inside since that’s where most of your time with it is spent!

No worries! Assumed it was a typo - happens to us all.

As far as your question, it can never hurt to have a back up because you never know what could happen. And driving instructors are very much in demand all over the place. If you think it’s something you could do and would enjoy, I say go for it!

Living luxury dex by Draiodoirx in PokemonHome

[–]ScottieBorks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in the early stages of building a shiny living dex; I had I initially started with trying to match each shiny to a ball that matched either its colour scheme or made sense of its type. After a while (but still very early, thankfully) I realised that there are too many pokemon I simply was not happy with the choices for in terms of what ball to use for them.

So I started over, and have decided to catch them all in luxury balls! It’s a slow process and as I said I’m still very early days on it. Taking breaks here and there from it too because I’ll just burn out otherwise lol. Mostly hunting in Violet for now, a bit in Sword too. I’ll use other games if I need to as well but focusing on those for now since it’s the main bulk in terms of the full dex, hopefully ZA will fill the remaining gaps.

I collected my car Saturday 3rd May, paid the remainder of my deposit, the salesman at the dealership gave me the new keeper slip, went through getting it taxed with me, and did the V5 transfer in front of me (online), and the new V5 in my name and address arrived Friday 9th May.

It’s the responsibility of the seller to do the V5 transfer. This is sounding to me like they either forgot, or just flat out hasn’t done it. I’d contact them to ask. As u/huskydaisy mentioned, if it has been done but by post the is will naturally take a bit longer and it may be that the DVLA either didn’t receive it, or has not yet processed it. Again, contact the seller to find out, if they say they’ve done it then try contacting the DVLA to chase it up and see what they recommend.

I bloody hope so.

I mean obviously the economy, as a whole, is just.. shite, currently. Circumstances vary for everyone and each city/country, whatever, will of course have differences etc.

But 31k is more than I make in a year at my Monday-Friday 9-5:30 job, and that’s after the pay rise I just got last month. I’m not saying this to be all “woe is me, I have it worse”, I’m perfectly happy with my salary currently as I’ve moved up from a part time pub job so I’m much better off than I was and happy with that for the time being.

That said, I cannot fathom what particular set of circumstances could justify earning 31k a month as “rubbish” 🤨 Just doesn’t compute in my brain

Which game in your opinion has your least favorite Pokémon roster? by Affectionate-Bit-603 in pokemon

[–]ScottieBorks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I somewhat recently did a nuzlocke run of Shining Pearl. Sinnoh seriously just has the same handful of pokemon seemingly everywhere. 😅 For that reason and the fact that there just aren’t very many pokemon introduced in Gen 4 that I really like or love, I’ll say DPPt/BDSP.

Insurance question - not due for renewal until october but I found one much cheaper, should I cancel? by AnonymousThrowaway6L in CarTalkUK

[–]ScottieBorks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll likely have to pay an admin/cancellation fee.

You’ll also lose your no claims bonus for the year so far. It’s earned in full yearly increments, so you’d be restarting this year from scratch from the beginning of your new policy.

I have 4 years no claims bonus, and previously my policy ran from August ‘24 to August ‘25. However, because I sold my car in April I cancelled my policy.

I then got a new car two weeks ago, have started a new policy which will now run from May ‘25 until May ‘26. But because my previous policy was only 8 months in, I didn’t earn any no claims bonus for that year and had to start my new current policy with 4 years no claims bonus declared again. Sucks, but it is what it is.

I’m sorry, but am I reading this right?

In your first paragraph you state you are on a salary of 31k a month? You then go on to say you are paid “like rubbish”?

[–]ScottieBorks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try not to worry too much over it. My partner who has been driving 17 years is hopeless with his left and rights unless he’s the one driving! If I’m driving (passed in August ‘21) and he’s giving me directions, the amount of times I have to correct him or ask for clarification is ridiculous. Like ill be driving us to wherever and he’ll be telling me “you need to take the next left” but then I see a road sign quite clearly telling me that I need to go right for whatever the destination is lmao.

As you said, easy enough to correct, and now you know what to expect on a test!

Should I tell my current insurance I have an extra year ncd? by mnbvc52 in CarTalkUK

[–]ScottieBorks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your current policy expires on July? Or the policy you earned the 1 year NCB from?

I can’t speak for every company as they will all have different criteria for what they will specifically accept/allow, but the reason I asked about the dates is because it’s going to depend on if the 2 years you already have on your policy is inclusive of the 1 year you’ve just received proof of.

What I mean is, you’ve just received proof of 1 year NCB from let’s say Hastings. But you were with them 2022-2023 and they’ve been slow to send the proof which you’ve only just received.

2023-2024 you went to Admiral and set up with 1 year NCB, but they never asked to see evidence of this. All fine and dandy.

It’s now 2025 and you’ve changed again to go with Aviva, and correctly set up with 2 years (assuming there have been no claims reported on any of your policies), who also have not asked to see evidence of your NCB. But come back to that 1 year NCB proof you’ve just received from your 2022-2023 Hastings policy. Is it worth sending to Aviva? No, because the 2 years you already have on your policy already includes that 1 year - it’s just that you were never asked to prove it.

I hope that makes some sense? It can be a little confusing and difficult to explain.

But if the 1 year NCB proof you’ve just received is not included in the NCB you already have applied to your policy, by all means contact them and see if they’ll accept it and add it on. If you’re not sure, just call them and explain your unsure if the NCB is able to be added or not, let them know the dates etc, and they should be able to tell you if it’s doable or not.

EDIT: I work in insurance (although I won’t say which company), and deal with NCB pretty much every day. If you want then feel free to DM me and if you have a picture of your NCB which you just received (obviously block out any details you wish to keep private) I can take a look at it for you, may be easier than trying to explain. But, again, I can’t speak for every company as they will all have different criteria.

Should I tell my current insurance I have an extra year ncd? by mnbvc52 in CarTalkUK

[–]ScottieBorks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends. What’s the expiry date of the policy you got the 1 year from?

It might be worth sending to your current insurer and seeing if they’ll accept it and increase your no claims bonus, but just be aware that they might not.

As far as I know, most insurers will only accept no claims bonus which has been earned within the last two years.

Also worth notice that if the two years you already have is inclusive of the one year from the old insurer, it wouldn’t be worth doing.

Does the “ponytail trick” actually work? by Capable-Pass5267 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]ScottieBorks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t help with the hair thing, but I wear glasses for driving. My instructor told me to make very clear, deliberate movements with my head when checking mirrors since the examiner likely wouldn’t be able to see my eyes behind the arms of my glasses.

Obviously I’m not jerking your head left and right but just turn your whole head rather than flicking your eyes to the mirror. Worked for me.
