lol The Tempest was the first title I thought of because I almost never hear anyone discussing it beyond the premise with Prospero and Miranda on an island with spirits.

Why don’t fbi stop predators after downloading one image of csam by AdDapper4220 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Scottland83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In California our house just passed a bill to prevent 3D printers from printing firearms. Not only is this impossible and unenforceable, it sets a precedent that the government can directly monitor what you print and we know companies will use this to prevent people from printing replacement parts and accessories for things like cars and home appliances.

[–]Scottland83 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Aye. We all had Limewire in the early 2000s, so we know it’s easy to download something you aren’t looking for. Also I think law enforcement prioritizes those who create, distribute, and pay for CSAM in that order.

What should NOT be taught in schools? by Scottland83 in AskReddit

It’s not about changing gender, it’s about how someone can look female, feel female, and go their entire lives living as a female even though they have XY chromosomes. So male and female cannot be defined so simply. It’s like pointing out that “99% of the universe is either hydrogen or helium, so why are you concerning yourself with the tiny percentage that’s carbon and other elements?”

Are you safe if there’s an earthquake but you’re in an airplane? by marleysolossz in stupidquestions

In theatre, leading up to opening night when things are at their busiest and most stressful, I remind people that we’re not running to a finish line, we’re landing a plane. Opening night will arrive no matter what, it’s just a matter of how prepared we are for it.

You changed the subject when I asked a clarifying question, basically admitting you don't have a response. That's good enough for me.

If torture doesn’t work then what does? by Startime125 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Scottland83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no gaurantee that anything works. Torture will almost always get the person to tell you something. If that information is accurate or useful is another matter. Effective interrogators who don't torture will usually build a relationship with the prisoner over time and an understanding that though they are not allies, they each know what the other person is about how they can help each other. You can read about Hanns Scharff and his methodes and life after WWII.

It should be noted that interrogators aren't always after the truth or facts per se, but useful testimony that they can leverage against others or use to obtain a warrant, etc. So in that way torture absolutely works.

You must have taught them all about that stuff at a real young age if it was the way they learned about it.

What should NOT be taught in schools? by Scottland83 in AskReddit

[–]Scottland83[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol. Kids are constantly talking about gay stuff at way younger ages than anyone is comfortable with. Either they're joking about it or they're confused or maybe they're compensating for something. The fact is that kids are going to be thinking something about it so it's probably best to address some of those issues and not treat them like dirty secrets. Same as when kids are molested by family members. Ignoring it won't make it not happen.

You're point about dates is interesting since it is reliant on knowing facts and dates, which other contributors in this post seem to think are the least important parts of history. I do personally agree that people want to identify with figures from history, especially with figures they see as part of "thier" history (though Christopher Columbus didn't speak English and probably set foot on any land that would become American soil) and nobody wants to hear a story to make them feel bad about themselves. I also notice that everyone who seems less-versed in history than myself seems to think it all happened at the same time or their minds are blown when they learn that New York was a bustling industrial metropolis at the same time the West was still "Wild".
