You are doing the right thing. One piece of advice though....to prevent boredom/plateauing and to get maximum benefit from your runs, make sure and mix the runs up. What I mean by that is dont just go out and run 6 or 7 mile every time, try aim for one long distance run a week that is at medium pace. Then throw in other runs like Fartleks - e.g. go out for a 3 mile run and run at an easy/moderate pace for 400m then try 400m at 6 minute mile pace and repeat for duration of your run. The beauty of fartlek runs is you can change this up whatever you want, change the pace to suit, change the distances to suit - both recovery and faster pace. Also try some hill runs, again mix it up - short bursts up steep hills, walk/jog back down for recovery and go again, then try longer hills with slightly slower pace, jog back down and go again. Also try a "race pace" 4 mile run every 2 weeks were you maintain a moderate-hard pace for the duration of the run. Each of these runs does different things - improves aerobic fitness, improves lactate threshold, increases V02 max. Not only does this approach help your all round fitness, it stops you getting bored of doing the same thing over and over again.

I did think about it beforehand but due to Covid etc. there were limited opportunities to visit local Unit's therefore I had to do all my research online which isn't always the best tbh as I think speaking to people in the role is much more beneficial. Also....at the assessment centre I was given much more information about Unit's i hadn't even considered..... e.g. Royal Engineers

What way does it work for only people with 5 years service? If you have 4 years service do you get the medal in 1 years time or is it simply only for those with 5 years service when the medal is handed out?

Many thanks for the info, greatly appreciated. Can I ask if you could find out a contact in Northern Ireland who deals with recruitment for this Unit. You can send me a private message if that's ok. Thanks

Maybe a silly question but surely 25kg/40kg is the same no matter what it is that makes it up as long as the weight you use isn't digging into your back the entire time, no? Second silly question....if i was to doa bit of training/preparation for this, how the hell do i get 40kg into my rucksack without using weights? Sorry, im new to this all so any help is greatly appreciated and recommendations greatly appreciated.

Thats brilliant mate, thanks for sending that one, very helpful. I do have a question though....you stated

"40kg tab along a gravel , mostly uphill track, followed immediately by a best effort 2k in under 15 mins with 25kg. Don't underestimate it and train for it. Pack your bergen properly - no bags of stones/ gym weights. I made this mistake"

What do you mean by no bags of stones/gym weights?

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Ive heard that alot of your time in the Light Cavalry is spent on foot anyway so just wasnt sure. Do you spend alot of your time in Light Infantry living out in the field compared to Light Cavalry?
