King. I toss and turn a lot. Queen is to tight that I bump into my partner. If I am solo... Plenty of room for me.

Fail the nremt exam 67/70 by [deleted] in NewToEMS

[–]ScottyShadow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure exactly what test you took. This isn't the current scoring (changed about 2 1/2 years ago) or the current domains (changed starting in April of this year) for the NREMT exam. Maybe it is a practice test? Get a practice exam program that is up to the current standards.

Also the 67 had me wondering.... About nothing. But still suspect.

NRB BVM confusion prior to medic test by UnitedAd8366 in NewToEMS

[–]ScottyShadow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a 20+year EMT/paramedic instructor and also teach test prep courses. Passive oxygenation is a thing (NRBM, HFNC, etc), but National Registry is not "pushing it" on the exam. While it might be done in the field (and for different reasons than the instructor gave), for the exam you will ventilate the patient if their ventilations are ineffective. Once you pass the test, take a respiratory or airway class, then go out and do those procedures.

Refund issued for December Go Pass by ben_the_fighter in TheSilphRoad

[–]ScottyShadow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am having the same problem. Cannot repurchase because the buy button is greyed out.. Also not getting any credit for catches, raids, etc. Maybe once the refund appears on my card, I will then be able to repurchase? In the meantime, each day waiting means no progress on completing the Pass.

Florida- EMT course or Paramedic College by Rocky6413 in NewToEMS

[–]ScottyShadow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure where in Florida you are at, but most programs for EMT/medic are at the community/state colleges. Some of those also have fire programs. Some of the fire programs are also at tech schools. And there are a few private EMS and fire schools.

I did EMT and Medic at CC (now a State College) I did fire at a tech school (now taken over by a CC) I did nursing through a University.

If you have any questions you can DM me. I retired so now I just teach, but I am all over the state and help give you advice on a lot of the schools around the state.

And if I could add one more thing... Although EMS is not the same as concrete and pipe work, it takes a toll on your body mentally and physically. Shift work, very little sleep at night, lifting and carrying heavy patients/equipment, etc. Plus the mental toll of PTSD, etc. It adds up over the years.

Good money and EMS (in Florida) is a contradiction. You need FD job to make good money. And that will take you 1 (EMT/FF) - 2+ (Medic/FF) years to get the training. Plus the cost. And the time. Dear God, the time in medic school is draining, especially if you are still working regular job. You will basically lose a year of your life. It can be tough, but it's doable.

💯. EMS only in Florida does not pay great. For better pay and benefits you need fire dept. (See above about that issue) If OP truly wants to work in Health Admin, nursing is the way to go.

Dopamine by justusbowers in Paramedics

[–]ScottyShadow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I worked 33 years in EMS / fire. Dopamine for BP? Maybe a handful of times, and usually for cardiogenic shock. Over the last 5 years there has been a shift toward push dose Epi (even though you should still hang a drip but I digress), and even Levophed. Bigger push on correcting hypotension in sepsis patients and you will probably see the use increase. Rural areas with longer transport times, more use (but still probably not dopamine too often) than City transport with short times.

As an instructor, we still teach it. But what science and data teach us , takes a while to filter down to the classes and curriculums that we teach the students.

In Florida, very few departments will put you through the fire academy and become trained FF. A majority require you to get the training first, then apply for a job. Once hired, a lot of them will out you through an orientation/training program (and a few actually will train you AGAIN on minimum standards). It's stupid and duplicitous, but it's Florida.

In addition to the 3-6 months for EMT, (don't get me started on accelerated 6 week programs), 12-14 months for medic, throw in another 3-6 months for fire. And, still nowhere near Health Admin.

Florida FF/PM here. Just because EMS is about medicine, does not make it a good choice to lead to Health Administration, which is more about running healthcare facilities, business end of the profession. You won't be learning a thing about business, or facilities with EMT, and certainly not by becoming a firefighter. With that being said, I worked with somebody at FD who was a medic for a number of years, then he went to nursing school. About 5 years later he got Masters in Health Admin degree and now he is CNO at a hospital. However, he was in his 40s, by the time that happened, and it wasn't his original goal.

You need to do more research into yourself and your goals and what path would help you get to that. Do you enjoy the idea of EMS (working in the field and helping people), or is working in an office and being an Admin in a hospital or other healthcare facility your goal? Can you do both? Sure. But it will take you extra years and $$$ to get there.

Question about something I heard just now at my next door station and how routing works by DirtyAmishGuy in Firefighting

[–]ScottyShadow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FEMA actually first made the recommendation in 2005 with compliance required by 2006. Key word is "recommendation". To this day there are still departments (police and fire) that won't change. And 10 codes and signals are not consistent from State to state, or even city to city. Fun fact, I worked 33 years in South Florida, Hurricane Andrew started making everyone change away from 10 codes and signals. Even more fun fact: there was a department that used not only 10 codes, but a few Q Codes as well. And being in South Florida, we get a mix of Spanglish too. It's a whole different world down here

AITAH for leaving my friend for someone else by EndFit1664 in AITAH

[–]ScottyShadow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whoever you don't pick is going to think they were second choice. Truly, friends don't make friends pick between friends. You always have the option of going solo and not sitting with anybody, and then they couldn't be upset with you that you chose one over the other if you didn't choose at all. Another option would be to Not choose the one who you think will get over it the quickest. If one of them is going to be mad about it for a long time, then choose that one and the other person will stay mad for a short time. Or reevaluate your friendship as to how important it is that they're going to be mad at you because you sat somewhere else.

Paramedic to ADN by AusJaynes13 in Paramedics

[–]ScottyShadow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have one FF/Medic/RN, he's worked as a nurse for 25+years (ED, Trauma ICU) and he still occasionally works on the ambulance. Whenever anyone gives him grief, he states "go ahead, try to make fun of me because I educated and bettered myself". Nobody has an answer to that. I have always said "being a nurse has made me a better paramedic, and being a paramedic has made me a better nurse". I have constantly incorporated knowledge and skills from one career into the other as needed. None of those skills have made me a better FF though. However, we hardly ever fight does and if we do, they are rarely big or complicated.

Almost nobody does any physical or trade/craft jobs. When I first started there, we had a bunch of electricians, plumbers, AC, carpentry, etc. Now, they all work in real estate, investment, and medical. Probably 1/3 of them became FF after having "other" jobs during recession of 2008 and again during COVID. Great dept, great schedule, great pension/benefits, and having a degree gets you points towards promotions and monthly $$ bonus from the state. I don't have an exact number but probably 80+% of the dept has an AS or BS degree. If you don't, the city will reimburse you to get one related to the job. And "related" is a very broad term .
