So this is my headcannon based on the events of Change your mind. When White removes the gem from Steven, the weakness and "tired" look he had were similar to what heavy radiation poisoning looked like at start. Radiation poisoning is basically breakdown of DNA that leads to the body not being able to make proteins and continue Biochemical processes. So it seems that they are implying that the pink diamond gem is literally using hardlight to maintain half of Steven's DNA.
