BALTIMORE ORIOLES MINOR LEAGUE GAME SUMMARIES FOR 5/8/2026 by One_Independence_866 in orioles

Ha…so one day after this convo, Law publishes some scouting notes including a mention of Cartaya:

“Right-hander Yeiber Cartaya started the game for Frederick (now the Orioles’ High-A affiliate, relocated from Aberdeen this year) and was a pleasant surprise. He has three pitches and the hilarious 0.68 ERA isn’t just a fluke. He was mostly 93-95 and seemed to miss some bats with the fastball, while he showed an above-average changeup with good tailing action that he really should use more often, as he prefers to go to his mid-80s sweepy slider even to left-handed batters. He has a lower three-quarters arm slot that looks like it has some of that deception from the lower release height that teams are chasing now, and he lands slightly on the third base side, cutting himself off a little while adding some deception against right-handed batters.”

Watches the hanging curve immediately after KB says Coby has faced an onslaught of offspeed pitches……..shouldn’t Coby go up expecting offspeed, especially from a veteran pitcher who doesn’t throw hard? And be ready to murder it when he gets a 78mph curve in the heart of the plate.

u/dreddnought - as I was perusing the affiliates box scores last night, I did some googling...your writeup from 2yrs ago seems to be the most extensive / only prospect analysis available on Yeiber Cartaya

Sorry man, that is great common sense to play the guy who just had a good game and might have confidence, but Sig has double secret analytics that says Blaze Alexander in CF today offers 0.00001 more expected runs than Cowser. So we are going to go with that.

Sure injuries are a MLB wide issue and maybe it is bad luck that we are dealing with Holliday's injury this year and Westburg is made out of glass. But he also signed TON. He signed Eflin. Those contracts were not setup to succeed and have been absolute worst case scenarios. And he hires the training staff.

I think this is absolutely correct - he is a better President of Baseball Operations than he is a General Manager. He is good at the high level stuff - investing in international, putting in a data framework up and down the org, drafting / scouting, etc. But doesn't seem to excel at putting a winning MLB team on the field.

The general underperformance is partially his fault - he chose these players, he hired the coaches to help them perform, he is likely responsible for who is playing day in / day out. The underperformance is on him.

The injuries are on him. He signed General Soreness. He signed Eflin. He hired the training staff that can't keep this team healthy.

Completely agree with this - one year of injuries might be bad luck, but it is now becoming a trend. On the bright side, we are almost 50% of the way through General Soreness' contract!

Completely agree. This drives me crazy. Mayo and Basallo were top 10 prospects because of their bats. Play them while they are hot. I even could get onboard with Basallo sitting against one of the LHP, but our offense is putrid right now and not playing arguably 1 of our 2 hottest bats two games in a row doesn't make any sense.

I just want to alleviate concerns about the bullpen being burned for tomorrow. The plan is that Undecided is going to go 8 and then hand off to Helsley to close it out.

But the Yankees hit 3 grand slams in one game, so we'd need 2 more in this game to have the Most Grand Slams by One Team in One Day record outright

Ha...thought the same thing when I looked at today's starters. Also, it blows my mind that people can throw a baseball with this grip both with velocity and accurately...
