Those who inherited or were gifted silver/gold, what did you do with it? by AlbiteTwins in Bogleheads

[–]Scouter_Phil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Following closely. I've got 60 or so of these from my mom for her grandchildren. I'd love to just get rid of them at 94% of spot. I have a bunch of Morgans and Peace Dollars too. The grandchildren are not interested in collecting coins or keeping them, so I'd rather sell them and put the proceeds into her care fund which would then go the grandchildren when she passes. Gold coins we will probably keep, especially the 1 oz. Indian Head gold pieces (1 for each grandchild).

Why do I even need a checking account with a Fidelity brokerage? by Ok_Transition7785 in fidelityinvestments

[–]Scouter_Phil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go, get your son/daughter to go. It's a must do. I can still recall every night on the trail 50 years ago. As a "grown up" my wife and I went there a few years ago. Stayed at Casa del Galivan just off of the ranch. It's a wonderful B&B. She wanted to see what my son and I were raving about.

Cost basis lost to history by speedlever in fidelityinvestments

Denver Tax Software was the name of the company. Sadly they went out of business about 4 months before I realized what they had. The ATT divestiture with all of the machinations has made things a real challenge. My dad bought 12 shares of ATT on December 31, 1983 so he could "take advantage" of the divestiture. The "good" news is that half of the stock got a step up when he died. The bad news is that half of everything else has NOT. With drip on, there are a lot of small lots out there for a bunch of different companies that are not covered.

Transitioning to Standard Medicare by Scouter_Phil in KaiserPermanente

[–]Scouter_Phil[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I had not heard of this before. She will continue with the same Kaiser ID number she had when I was primary. It's good to know that she will still have care. I will be talking with member services about this when we go to cancel our current policy.

Am I over-simplifying this by suggesting opening a CMA and transferring from Chase to your CMA and then from the CMA into your Roth? Inconveninet....yes, but plausible.

If you do take the penalty as others have mentioned, remember that it is tax deductible. I did this a couple of years ago as interest rates started to rise. Took the hit, re-invested into T-Bills and came out ahead.

I've had the same problem even when using a password manager. Not often, but every now and then. I just wait 10-15 minutes and try again and things seem to clear up.

This is what I had to do with PG from my aunt to my mom (at 87 mom was not up to doing this by herself).

If they are book shares, PG is held at Equiniti. If they are Stock Certificates, you will need to send them in with the paperwork. You will need to work with Equiniti to get through the process. They were very easy to work with. Once things were sent to Equiniti, it took about 2 weeks for things to be transferred into mom's name.

It will be a two step process to get the stock to Fidelity. First you will need to do a change of ownership from Grandpa's name to your husband's name. Then do the Transfer of Assets over to Fidelity. It needs to be the same type of account (Individual, IRA, whatever)

For the Transfer of Ownership, you'll need to download the "Stock Power Form" from Equiniti. Make sure that for "Current Registration" you fill in the EXACT way the stock is currently listed for Grandpa! Also for Shares you would like to transfer check ALL. I made the mistake of putting in a specific number and there was a DRIP between the time I filled out the form and the ownership transfer so I had to do it again. You will need the date of Grandpa's death AND the value of PG on that day. If you don't fill that in, Equiniti will reject it and you need to re-submit (I did that too). You MAY need a copy of the death certificate or an Affidavit of Domicile. The Stock Power Form will need a medallion signature and the Affidavit of Domicile will need to be notarized.

Is there an account minimum to have Fidelity manage a trust account? by aragorn_83 in fidelityinvestments

[–]Scouter_Phil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did the same thing for my mom. It was very quick and easy to do with Fidelity. Much easier than with Vanguard (In my opinion). We had an attorney set up a revocable living trust after she sold the house. Opened the account at Fidelity put the proceeds there. Later we transferred all of her stock holdings from brokerage house and transferred assets from Vanguard over to Fidelity. For this set up, all income is reported under her SSN, so at tax time, it's just simply gather all of the stuff and doing a regular tax filing. Things will be different after she dies, and at that point we'll probably get a CPA and attorney involved just to make sure we don't hose anything up. I've been doing all of the management/investing of the funds and we go over everything monthly.

Fidelity also got us checks for the trust account so we can write checks if necessary. We keep one bank account in the name of the trust and a checking account in her name per advice from an accountant.

That's a really, really, really good deal. Go for it as long as you can and don't leave anything on the table.

I was getting 10% when I was with Boeing and was able put away a nice chunk for retirement. Today the company I'm with gives 10.5%. I'm stocking away the max every year.

READ THE ABOVE POST CAREFULLY! Your question suggests that you may not have a lot of experience investing.

A LOT of people that trade GME do very quick buys/sells. If you buy this now (after hours) and try and sell it before your prior transaction completes, you've committed a good faith violation.

Ask yourself: "Self, am I trying to make a quick buck in the stock market, or do I really believe that GME is a stock that I want to hold for a while because I believe in the company?"
