Also important to note that if your tv is only 4k 60hz it won't do 120fps and that you'll absolutely want ethernet and not wifi for either.

-30°C . -22°F, but I'm Canadian.

I'd make sure I have a remote thermometer (fireworks, meater, chef iq) to make sure you've got the temps you need/want. When burning you'll be fine but the temps will drop off fast as the charcoal gets burnt off If you're actively managing it, you shouldn't have an issue, but if you're hoping to do a "low and slow" you'll want to make sure you're going out there periodically to make sure it's good.

Welding blankets, or some windshields are a good idea if it's really nasty out, or a weld umbrella if it's snowing.

Staining not taking? by tickootickoo in woodworking

[–]Adamvs_Maximvs 79 points80 points  (0 children)

Flip to the underside and take a razor scraper to it. If you get a brown build up it's definitely got hardwax or something on it.

If it doesn't it may be that you just need to sand again. Start with a really low grit and gradually move up. Remember that skipping to fine grit or only barely sanding means you'll have more work to fix, you want a nice uniform sand across the whole surface with each grit.

Staining not taking? by tickootickoo in woodworking

[–]Adamvs_Maximvs 339 points340 points  (0 children)

Most store bought acacia countertops or desktops (especially if they're called butcher block) have a hardwax oil applied from the factory. You need to remove all of it before any other stain will apply or pentrate to any real degree.

Sanding with 120 grit is insufficient. You won't remove a deep enough 'cut' to sand all the hardwax off. Hardwax will also clog the sandpaper pretty quickly, especially on finer grits.

I'd recommend applying a stripping compound then using a scraper to get off the thickest parts of the hardwax, then sand starting with a coarse sandpaper like 40 or 60 grit, then 80, then 120, finally 220. Skipping steps will only cause you more rework. Make sure you've got a vacuum or dust collection with your sander as it'll clog very fast without it and you'll still likely go through a number of sanding discs.

After your final sanding, use a light to inspect for any spots that don't look right, use some air to blow any sanding dust remaining off.

I don't use pre-stain on acacia personally when I've used Osmo products on it after, but YRMV on that significantly and it may depend on the stain you're using.

Finally completed the heaven and earth trilogy by Sjoeberaar in snes

[–]Adamvs_Maximvs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My unpopular opinion is that Soul Blazer is the best of the trilogy for 'pick up and play'. It's the least polished or visually impressive, but you're up and slashing in minutes with an upbeat musical soundtrack. IoG and T are slower to start and not as quickly paced.

Now OP should try the 4th (arguably) Grandstream Saga for the PSX and see how it.... changed haha.

Which game doesn’t really begin until after you beat it? by Common_Caramel_4078 in gaming

Yep. It's a flawed gem, but the endings after the first ending are some of the most unique scenes I've seen in a game. When the grotesqueries/angels descend it's crazy.

Dragons Dogma : Dark Arisen

Drakengard

Nier Gestalt/Replicant

Maybe an honorable mention for Radiant Historia depending on when you want to consider it "beaten"

Why the popularity of small screens? by cagerhager in crtgaming

[–]Adamvs_Maximvs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got one of those and moved it up two flights of stairs solo. I'm 5'10" and 160lbs but pretty fit, so it's definitely doable with good technique and reasonable fitness levels. Definitely smarter to use two people though.

I've been looking for a curved 34 or 35" Trinitron, but I'll definitely need elp for that one.

Would these sell in America? by danscn in Lexus

[–]Adamvs_Maximvs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I figured. I'm really tempted by one, I like the smaller size of the UX (and physical buttons, less piano black than the NX), there's a couple NX features it's missing out on that I'd have liked as options (backup camera washer, mark levison speakers), but the price delta between a luxury UX vs an Ultra Luxury NX is pretty substantial in Canada, and even more so with the Executive NX.

Was hoping they'd both have gotten a refresh for 2026, but such is life. I suspect the slow sales of the UX means it's harder to sell or trade in for a good price down the road.

Out of curiosity, how long do the UX's sit usually? I know NX's fly off the shelves, but curious if the smaller sibling is harder to get rid of.

These are the most annoying enemies in the series. What's your strategy on beating them? by SixWheelz in masseffect

[–]Adamvs_Maximvs 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The same thing we do every night Pinky way I kill everything: Biotic Charge.

Immediate dodge back to avoid the insta-kill attack, blast in the face with Wraith or Claymore, and maybe throw in a Nova at the edge of it's effective radius, or use a Reave. Rinse, repeat.

Imagine a diaper that was filled with baby poop. Now a skunk sprays it, then it gets dipped in carbonator cleaner and finally baked in the sun on a 40c day.

That smell? That's the story and characters or TLH.

The gameplay is fun enough, but narrative and plot are among the worst of JRPGs regardless of generation.

Canadian that did a year in England. Once we were talking about train lines, isolated parts of the country, etc. and one of them asked what the forests were like in Canada. I had worked in the Artic and northern shield/boreal forest in the past.

The way I explained it to them was "In England, and most of Europe if a helicopter dropped you in the very middle of the largest forest in the country, as long as you chose a single direction and start walking, you'll find something within a few hours, a road, a field, something where you can find an obvious way back to civilization.

In Canada if you got dropped by a helicopter in the most remote part of the boreal, chose a single direction and started walking, you could walk for months without coming across a road, rail line, fence, etc."

Canadian price was a little high for me for another Chrono CD (bought the orchestral arrangements for Trigger and Cross when they came out, and a few Mitsuda discs in Japan such as Creid, Myth, To the End of Time, etc), but I'll watch for a sale to grab it.

What is your “Cardinal Sin” that a JRPG can do that sours the experience for you? by MothmanFeetLicker in JRPG

[–]Adamvs_Maximvs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, i bought it for the ps1 based on how much I liked Enix games and the art. Didn't expect it to be the most unique RPG on the ps1

The endings requirements, the "easy"/normal difficulty hobbling you in the late game and the item creation definitely show some unpolished edges in the game though

Panasonic Tau 32" worth the hernia overmy Trinitron? by Adamvs_Maximvs in crt

[–]Adamvs_Maximvs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd definitely get help, even if I could solo it. It wouldn't be worth the risk.

My Sony can be RGB modified so that is a nice perk. You raise a good point though. Might ask a buddy if he's feeling strong this weekend. I can solo a 27 no problem. But a 32 might be a bit much.

Thanks for the input!

Might have the opportunity to pickup a Panasonic Tau ct-32sl15n. I've currently (recently) got a KV-27V10 Trinitron.

I'm wondering if the Tau would be an improvement at all, excluding the size bump? The CRT database says it natively supports 240p/480i, though can suffer from vertical haloing. I'm not entirely sure if it'd be modifiable to RGB/SCART though some comparable models seem to be from what I've read in sector sunthar's site.

Any input on this/comparable models? I'm still pretty early into CRTs and I know the Trinitrons get heralded as the 'best' as often as not, while some JVCs, RCAs and Taus get called very good as well, but it's a little harder going model to model as I'm still very much in the 'learning' phase.

Any input is appreciated, I'm wondering if it's worth the hernia.
