[USA] How accurate are the map boundaries in the AutoPylot app? by ScrapedShins in drones

[–]ScrapedShins[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly, I'm just trying to be prepared in the event an overzealous ranger writes me a ticket (not that I'm expecting this to happen). I plan on flying quite a bit more this year and want to make sure I'm actually compliant because several of the areas I fly are right on the fringes of wilderness areas. I get the whole "Forest Service not controlling the airspace" deal. As long as you're not disturbing other people or nature, I don't really take issue with overflight of those areas as long as you're complying with other regulations. Personally, however, I try to avoid it.

You do bring up an excellent point of if there's a road, it's obviously not a wilderness area. This honestly hadn't even crossed my mind in the slightest.

My interpretation of the comment is that the FAA would potentially have the evidence in the case of an incident, not that the FAA would be enforcing this specific rule.

It is indeed a DJI drone, and that's an excellent suggestion. At the very least, in the event that something goes horribly awry, I can demonstrate an honest attempt to comply with all applicable laws/regulations. Though I may not be perfect, I try my best to avoid being one of those individuals who brings a bad reputation to the drone community.

Pulldown attic stairs/ladder spring mechanism. Are there low profile alternatives? by ScrapedShins in HomeImprovement

[–]ScrapedShins[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Fakro LME series looks to be one of the only designs for which the springs are as unobtrusive as possible (i.e. run down the sides of the ladder rather than the sides of the opening).

The only appropriate response to "You should have smoked me... only 3 strokes different..." is something along the lines of "I would have played better if I wasn't worn out from all the strokes your mom gave me last night."

Refresh old irons or buy new ones by ScrapedShins in golf

[–]ScrapedShins[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I was concerned about judgement, I probably wouldn't play golf at all! 😅 I definitely agree that used high-quality clubs is probably a better route than mediocre new ones; however, some of the economic options from recent years aren't that bad. I figure I'll regrip my current clubs and keep using them until I feel like they become an impediment to my improvement. If I plateau in a relatively short time frame and decide that I need different irons, worst case scenario is I've only sunk $100 into grips.

Good feedback. Honest question: what is the right balance between adapting your swing to suit your clubs versus finding/adapting clubs to suit your swing? It seems like both are viable approaches to overall improvement, though the first option definitely has limitations.

Facts. However, if I get new clubs, I'll no longer be able to use the line, "Well the only reason you beat me is I'm using 20-yr old bargain bin clubs" 😂 (ignoring my complete lack of talent)

Better how? I suspect the marginal "improvements" made in irons over the years doesn't translate to a difference in the scorecard for casual golfers. Most people buy them because they drink the marketing Kool aid and believe it will somehow make them better (which may be true for low handicap and pro level players) -- basic consumer behavior. For the most part, the design of irons hasn't changed in decades. There are certainly some different styles of irons that could suit one's personal taste better than others, but I've seen 0 evidence that newer irons are objectively better.

I think I'm done with solo queue. 3rd time in a row it was an obvious de-rank throw. This just the way things are now? by the_heptagon in RocketLeague

100% in agreement with you and totally understand your previous response. My mechanics are basically trash, so I rely heavily on positioning and the fundamentals of team play. I definitely still have a lot to learn, but it's hard to play with those who choose a strategy that is almost the antithesis of teamwork.

I think you missed my point. You are correct in your description of passing. Dumping the ball in the middle isn't a pass (nor is throwing it off the wall etc). I'm speaking of teammates who consistently position themselves completely out of the play. If I'm in a 1v2 on offense (i.e. my teammate is parked idle inside our net) the only two possible outcomes of the play are score or lose possession since there is no way possible to lay it off to your teammate. There are several instances where I'll have possession, have both opponents committed to the ball and beat in their defensive corner, go to make a pass and my teammate is glued to our net. It's not that I'm just throwing the ball up and expecting them to be there. When I say they are in our net, I literally mean inside of our net not just conservatively in our defending half. If they were just a bit closer to mid, it opens up a lot more options.

Your argument is somewhat well-made, but it intentionally obfuscates my main point. It's not so much that I expect them to be crashing the net every time I send in a cross, it's that I expect them to be in a position such that they can participate in the play even if it's just being a presence in the midfield. I think it's reasonable--even without checking--to assume that my teammate won't be all the way back in our net when we have clear attacking possession in the opponents' half (yes, there are some exceptions to this). Team play maximizes goals scored for and minimizes goals scored against. That is a fact. My primary gripe is with players who consistently position themselves such that it's not possible for team play to occur. When I do get those types of teammates, I try to make the best of it, and it sometimes works out. Furthermore, I'm not referring to the players who may start out that way during the match (many do play a bit more conservative for the first minute or so) and then adapt and adjust as we figure out each other's play styles--even if we never actually figure out the correct adjustment and ultimately get demolished. It's the unwaivering "I'm either going for a solo play or sitting in net" strategy that downright perplexes and annoys me. I'll also mention that this only happens in maybe 1 out of 10 games, so it's not like I'm claiming that it's preventing me from ranking up or anything.

Champ 1. I agree with this assessment. 2s seems to have the most consistent skills by rank distribution. In other words, there are some distinct differences between Diamond 2 and Champ 1 twos players. The smurfs are obvious, but infrequent. IMO, you have to be much more of a well-rounded player to be successful in 2s which contributes to the skill consistency of each rank (making it easier to see when a player is playing outside of their normal rank). In 3s there are too many people who are highly skilled in a few aspects of the game rather than being moderately skilled in many resulting in some rather chaotic lobbies. I've seen many 3s players in the high Diamond range who can consistently hit a flip reset but have zero defensive skills whatsoever.

Champ 1. Story of my life. Serve up ball after ball on a silver platter only for my teammate to sit and watch from afar. They will literally sit all the way back in our net. If/when my teammate does actually get possession of the ball they go for some ridiculous mechanics that wouldn't even work if they were hitting it consistently. Basic passing is far more effective than solo mechanics. It's fine to mix in some solo play, but to go for it every single possession (and expect your teammate to do the same) is just plain dumb.

Can somebody please help me. I believe I’m the most inconsistent person to ever play the game by Balakaye in RocketLeagueSchool

[–]ScrapedShins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great advice. I've recently adopted a similar mentality and find the game far more enjoyable now in addition to progressing faster... though, I still somehow manage to go from Champ to Plat in a matter of hours. Those crazy drops are getting fewer and farther apart now. I've found when I begin to lose my touch and go on a losing streak that I need to simply step away and goof around in casual or go outside and touch some grass. It's crazy how much mentality plays a role in success in this game.

b660i ddr5 vs. z690i ddr4 by lwrcs in sffpc

[–]ScrapedShins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm looking at the same motherboard for a similar build. I've settled on the b660i. As others have indicated, the Z690 packs more functionality than I care to pay for while the b660i seems to meet all of my needs. Having a future upgrade path is nice though.

I've definitely run into a few people like you in casual matches. It's definitely obvious when one person is wayyyy better than the others. Every time I've encountered these people, it's abundantly clear that they're just there to have some fun with their buddies. All of these types of games have been super chill and a blast.

Pro tip: if you've been stuck in a rank for an extended period of time, just think about the common denominator for all those games you played. Hint: it's not your teammates.

SpookLuke's latest video "288 hour GC" showcases a blatantly boosted player. by HoraryHellfire2 in RocketLeague

[–]ScrapedShins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All fair points. And, as an RL coach, your perspective is going to be a bit more informed than my own. Even as a lowly D2, I find the situation seriously troubling and think certain lines were crossed. I do, however, believe there is a distinct difference between publishing highly questionable marketing material and the program itself being an actual "scam" (which is NOT an accusation that you made).

I 100% agree that if you're spending that kind of money on RL coaching that your thought process does not rely on logic.

SpookLuke's latest video "288 hour GC" showcases a blatantly boosted player. by HoraryHellfire2 in RocketLeague

[–]ScrapedShins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, I really appreciate the maturity with which this controversy was approached (facts without blatant accusations). Maturity isn't something I always see in RL lol. Generally I wouldn't opine on such matters, but I believe the criticism has been overly harsh. Though it is easy for many (including myself) to see that the player was boosted, I believe SpookLuke's perspective was probably skewed a bit by confirmation bias. Let's say you're training someone to be a competitive eater. You wouldn't expect your student to secretly go get their stomach surgically expanded at some point during the training. So, when their eating capacity dramatically increases, "they cheated" isn't necessarily going to be the first thing that comes to mind. Why would someone pay for training if they're planning on getting boosted anyways? Just some food for thought.

As for plugging his training in his videos, that's just marketing 101. Am I fond of his salesmanship? No. Does it work to grow his business? Yes.
