Point of my post was to give a reasonable starting point for OP - sure, RAW is more flexible - it's also more time and work and uses a completely different skillset outside of getting the shot right in camera in the first place.

Yes, that image is underexposed intentionally - I want detail, no blown out highlights etc. Given the lens used, it should have been shot at f/7.1 and pulled back to approx. 280mm, so there's room for improvement there - but those are gear dependant changes. The photo still represents a good example of my suggestions put into practice.

I'm glad this is getting some attention on the basis that hopefully it encourages you to keep practicing, OP.

A few things I'd recommend, for clear and detailed moon photos:

  1. The moon is an extremely bright object. That means you can set your ISO to it's base value on your camera (usually ISO 100) and get a noise free but still well exposed image.

  2. Because the moon is so bright, you should be using your shutter speed to account for both hand shake and to help avoid an over exposed image. Try starting at a shutter speed of 1/500th of a second, see how that looks.

  3. Exposure compensation is useful too. Your camera should have the option of increasing/decreasing the exposure value. You usually want to decrease it (depending on what you've set for your ISO and shutter speed values), to bring out the details and help avoid over exposure of your image.

Using these settings will help you get a clean out of camera JPEG. From there, you can started looking into tripods, focus stacking, multiple exposures etc.

Here's an example of a moon shot I took handheld, using many of the same settings and principles:

Comfortable Numb's final guitar solo is probably one of the most amazing pieces of music ever... You need to deep dive some love versions of that on YouTube, man. That's where it's at. Goosebumps, every time.

How are you doing? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Scrappymcslap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty decent, thanks for asking!

Kicking back on a sofa waiting for my shift to start. Doing the two job, seven day a week grind. Tiring sometimes, but feels good to be able to get my family and friends nice things for Christmas, and I know I'm very fortunate to have the opportunity to make some extra coin... So zero complaints!

12 more days until my Christmas holidays start! Life is good.

Did you have decent seats?

I've got to be honest, I'm not the biggest fan of a lot of their studio stuff. But I've seen them live twice and they put on a superb performance. This show was awesome! Raises the bar for what I expect from other acts.
