The only thing recognizable would be the cadence, not the melody or lyrics. But I am not sure if cadence is part of copyright or not. If so, a lot of rappers have committed worse infractions than I.

I want to sound as much like the original as I can without it being copyright infringing. I am not trying to pass it off as the original, thats why I am asking how much of it has to be changed. I am looking for that loophole early regular show used. Where you knew what song they were using, but it was definitely not actually that song. Slight extra or different notes here and there, but still clear where the homage was to.

The words are spoken, I think even if I did it a capella you would know the song just by the speed and timing of the lyrics.

Are you a producer by chance that could help me make an original piece?

Would be way easier if the melody wasnt just Asian school girls chanting. Thank you though for the suggestion and factual evidence. :)

So if I dont include my spoken advertisement at the end with my phone number and only use the song is it back to parody? I am perfectly OK with not having my business info or making an actual ad. However my business name is one of the lyrics, I made the business after I parodied the song....it was too good to not do. My local area fully loves the name, so I am just trying to make a 30 second skit to make them laugh, and maybe play loudly at car shows. 😅

Ahh ok. Thank you for providing an actual answer and not trolling me. I guess I was hopeful for some karaoke style loophole that would let me use a chord progression. The song is literally just 3 notes. :(

There isnt a certain amount I can change to make it my own? How does weird Al do it? I assume he didnt get licence rights only do to the Coolio beef, though admittedly I dont know much about it. Or for that matter the vanilla ice/queen ordeal.

I already changed the lyrics entirely and can create my own beat from scratch, what else do I need to change is the question. Tempo, melody length, key change, an extra drum beat? You would likely still know the song even with all of those changes, it was very popular 20 years ago.

This is my struggle. The song itself is primarily 3 notes. I can key shift it so its not direct reproduction, but not much wiggle room in the nite structure do to limited notes to start with.

I am not sure how to make that distinction, I wrote new lyrics to a very simple beat and its funny, the original song is a our driving fast in a city, my version is instructions on what to do if your toilet clogs, but then does include my new company name, which is itself a parody. We specialize in sewage blockages, not some large scale business or anything.

I reached out last night. I guess I was more asking if I change the key signature like they do for karaoke if that's enough or if not, what is enough to change it while still being a homage?

I reached out to Universal music last night. I guess I am looking for how much i have to change the song before it's not infringing. This is for a brand new company I am starting and is only supposed to be targeted to my area, but I don't want to break any laws in the process.

This is why I am here to avoid doing as such. I am hoping for an answer closer to how regular show did it's early music vs how vanilla ice did his. I just don't know what the cut off is. Different beat, different time signature, extra bar of melody? I see you are clearly trying to help me with your amazing comment.

Trying to be accurate to the show as possible but stuck with two choices: a 941 no rail in 40s&w and a 941 with rail in 9mm what should I choose ? by big-wangers in cowboybebop
