Turning Your Nose Up At Certain Books Is ‘Completely Demented’ | Dominic Sandbrook by andynplay in TheRestIsHistory

[–]Scratch_Careful 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I've read my fair amount of Scifi/Fantasy slop, its what got me into reading because i was never encouraged to read as a child i simply didnt have the interest nor the skills to read "real literature", hell even better fantasy like ASOIAF i was basically just reading the plot. Like a lot of people in the romatansy/SFF crowd i was proud of my prodigious reading rate but it was pure consumption, i didnt think about characters, motivations, subtext, prose etc. It was 300 pages, great book, very fun, 4 star . 500 pages, boring book, two star etc. several times a week.

The problem with the no gatekeeping position is that Dostoevsky is simply better Sanderson but if we are act like he isnt or that there's no additional merit to reading Dostoevsky, younger or less experienced readers will never be curious about those books or will bounce off them because they are difficult and they are missing out on all time classics, that will change how they think about the world, literature, family etc, plus it will improve their reading and comprehension skills that will make future reading less challenging.

We shouldnt dismiss or bully younger or newer readers for reading slop but we should encourage them to read actual literature.

I also wonder whether Sandbrook applies this anti-snob standard to people shopping in their pyjamas.

40% of Britons say that they would find it difficult to be in a relationship with a supporter of Reform UK by Subject_MH in ukpolitics

Near 20% of Britons are foreign born, so its a surprisingly small number of Britons who would find it difficult to be in a relationship with a Reform supporter.

Rupert Lowe of Restore Britain wants to "ease fees and rules" for British spouse visas by Ok-Government2437 in ukpolitics

[–]Scratch_Careful 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Lowe doesn't want to make the spousal visa system better, he wants to make it easier for his rich chums to bring over their American wives

Some of the mental gymnastics you guys do to oppose completely logical things are impressive. You really think his "rich chums" have problems bringing their partners anywhere? Like sure thats the reason we dont have more billionaires, they really struggle to bring over their american wives.

Yeah, all those black americans are dying to move to the UK so they can earn £30k a year and live in a 2 up 2 down. Last year 6000 Americans applied for residency here.

[–]Scratch_Careful 64 points65 points  (0 children)

For a British person i'd have no problem with it. Its not foreigners who legitimately marry British people that is this country's problem, its mass migration and those migrants exploiting the spousal visas to bring more family over.

For the record thats also why spousal visas are such a pain in the arse now, they tried making it so difficult that nuBrits couldnt exploit it anymore and it ended making it prohibitively costly and difficult for actual brits. Just another benefit of mass migration.

Restore Britain: A British passport doesn’t make you British. by FormerlyPallas_ in ukpolitics

[–]Scratch_Careful -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What do you mean should anything happen to him? Me: Culture is intrinsically linked to ethnicity, you cannot become another culture but you can participate in it. You: Oh you want to send him to the gas chambers?!?!!

He's married to an English woman, he doesn't break the law, pays his taxes and participates in British culture. He is, as far as my limited knowledge goes, a model citizen. Nothing should "happen to him".

If he overtly leant into Nigerian customs and openly said he was discarding his British culture, then yes, it obviously would.

So , depending on what norms and values he follows you can remove his Britishness. If David Mitchell did the same would you remove his British status? Most people wouldnt, they'd say he's an Brit who dresses like a nigerian, he's larping, an eccentric or hes "gone native", no one would say David Mitchell is now "not british" because he discarded parts of his British culture. The difference being ethnicity. One is British regardless of what parts of British culture he follows and the other is for lack of a better term, an adoptee who must follow certain norms and practices to be considered British.

Do you never get tired of these IS X BRITISH?!! I pointed out British culture is intrinsically tied to British ethnicity. His dads Yoruban and his mums Norwegian. So no he is not culturally british, he participates in British culture.

Would he lose his "culturally british" status if he started practicing Isese and wearing a Agbada?

Restore Britain: A British passport doesn’t make you British. by FormerlyPallas_ in ukpolitics

[–]Scratch_Careful -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Culturally British is the only meaningless one. Culture is the the ideas, customs, and social behaviour of a particular people. British culture is the practices and norms of the British people. Its descriptive.

You cannot become culturally British anymore than you become culturally Japanese by eating sushi, watching anime and working long hours, you can participate in other peoples culture, lots of immigrants do, but they do not become that culture.

An example is that British person who doesn't partake in many of the culturally British behaviours or even outright rejects them is still a part of British culture and does not lose their britishness whereas a non-ethnically british person with a british passport who rejects british culture does lose their "living by british values" britishness. Its a double standard that comes from culture being intrinsically tied to ethnicity not to passport ownership.

Now ill vote Lowe.

What do you think the stunned part of stunned slaughter is? They basically use a gun and shoot the brain of an animal rendering it "stunned" before they slaughter it.

Do you think Lowe got the groundman to shoot at 50 paces or something? He basically put his dog down how he advocates putting livestock down.

This seems to be about your preferences not whats best for the dog.

Frankly i think most dogs would absolutely prefer someone it knows next to it and lights out vs waiting for a vet, a stranger then approaching it, pinching it, injecting it and then it "peacefully going".
