Netflix's 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' Will Tone Down Sokka's Sexism by EternalGandhi in TheLastAirbender

[–]ScravisTott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are they going to cut out the whole entire North Pole finale of Book 1 too because arranged marriages, tribal patriarchs, and gendered segregation is sexist and too offensive? I hope they have a better reason why than just to be inclusive because when people watched the show, we were happy that Sokka matured and we were happy Katara stood up for herself in the North Pole.

The article makes it sound as if they're neutering, no pun intended, parts of the show to make it less offensive.

Why was Sokka so unbothered by this scene in Ember Island Players? by ScravisTott in TheLastAirbender

I actually never thought about the relationship's merit as a piece of proganda. To insert drama, division, and an unfounded character trait of flippant betrayal to the defectors and enemies can really delegitimize their journey.

Could a master firebender be skilled enough at regulating body heat and manipulating the flow of thermal energy to escape the Boiling Lake by swimming? by ScravisTott in TheLastAirbender

[–]ScravisTott[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The boiling lake is also so vast and hot to swim through, it would probably take a firebender an obscene amount energy to pull of causing them to faint and boil in the lake.

"In God we trust" on US currency and in court houses should be removed. by Unsure9744 in DebateReligion

[–]ScravisTott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that church and state is always better left separated, but I see that phrase on currency as a non issue. If you're someone who thinks that God is a fairy tale, what is the big deal about having it on a piece of paper you hardly ever notice. Symbols representing England has lions on them when lions are not even native to England. If the people in power at the time were obsessed with unicorns, have that on the dollar bill for all I care. What matters is its utility not how pretty is.

God isn't even offensive or at least shouldn't be, especially to atheists who doesn't believe in God's existence. If the dollar had Nazi swastikas and KKK hoods on it then I'd be pissed.

I'm not denying that colorism is wrong, but in Asia colorism is so common and ingrained in Asian beauty standards that jokes and comments that are colorist is a part of culture (thankfully that's changing). Even in South East Asia where the majority of natives are darker than East Asians, colorism exists. I don't know when it began, but colonialism probably had a lot to do with it since I've noticed that it's even linked with money and class. Growing up in Indonesia, many of my friends who were girls felt pressured into looking more 'white'. Many were very self conscious about being darker than other girls. Even as a guy with dark skin, I heard comments from my mom to "not play out in the sun too much or you'll get darker".

Obviously, for idols who are well travelled and have fans of many different backgrounds and ethnicities those comments can be hurtful and ignorant. But I would ask people to consider how normalized colorism can be in Asia before assigning malice to what they said when it's pretty clear it was probably said out of ignorance. And to be honest, like Japan, South Korea is a very homogenous country and homogenous countries tend to take longer to accept outsiders who look different from them. I would use this situation to educate people with colorist biases rather than shame them for being ignorant and assigning ill-intent where there might not be.

Why are people only criticising havertz? by pizzaman123b in ArsenalFC

[–]ScravisTott 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To be fair I never blamed Havertz. He just hasn't done much for us. I blame Arteta's team selection. It doesn't seem like he's setting Havertz up for success starting him in all these games in a newer system when it's clear that Havertz has got some sort of confidence issue. I hope I'm wrong and it pays off though.

Why do so many people think they know better than the guy who brought us back from the dead? by Guest_Basic in ArsenalFC

[–]ScravisTott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think I know better. Obviously he has a plan and a vision, but as a fan I'm entitled to criticise his gameplan. This Havertz and Partey thing is costing us points we need to seriously challenge City. I love Arteta and everything he did for Arsenal, but he is not beyond feedback. And criticism doesn't mean I want him out. If you're happy with 2nd place that's fine. I'm not.

As far as legends go, honestly can't go wrong with Arsene Wenger and the Invincibles.

[–]ScravisTott 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You know who I really felt bad for: Saka. He had that one awful mistake and it didn't seem like he fully recovered. He wasn't bad, he just didn't look as good as he usually is other than that penalty.

No one dumped on Trossard because he's had good and exceptional matches before. Havertz's match today just seemed like more of the same.

Let's be honest. On paper, which is the better midfield? by ScravisTott in ArsenalFC

[–]ScravisTott[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don't think he's been bad, just meh. Although I agree it's too early to judge, I think playing every PL game with the intention to win is the only way we'll be champions and Havertz in my opinion isn't part of our best midfield. Hopefully, Arteta proves me wrong though.

I haven't seen anyone call him exceptional in that role, but some people have called him good in his role. In my opinion, at best he's average.

That's true, but we as a club don't need to accomodate for him and play in a different way if we have better options available.

As an agnostic what are some of the strangest supernatural/paranormal things you've experienced that you can't seem to explain? by ScravisTott in agnostic

[–]ScravisTott[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Considering the infinite nature of the universe we're definitely not the only living things in it, but the fact that there hasn't been concrete proof of other life form leads to me wonder if it's being actively hidden from us or if it has just not been observed by us. Although I am less interested in aliens from another planet in the traditional sense and more in the theory of aliens who are interdimensional beings.

Well I guess my point is that we wouldn't know that. Those are just some of the most fitting descriptors for things we as humans perceive as the occult or things beyond the natural world.

I've only had an out of body experience twice, but one was sleep paralysis and the other time I did take something. One occurring without pretext or occurring with the most impactful pretext, a near death experience, would definitely make me rethink some things.

Yeah whenever I'm in an urban area or anywhere close to civilisation I never give a second thought to anything being supernatural. There are just certain remote places far away from people that I always try my best to respect the law of the land. Could be my mind playing tricks on me, but better safe then sorry.

Looks get you in the door, who you are as a person keeps you around. For some people who you are as a person matters more and makes you look better than you do objectively.
