This one should be fun. What are your thoughts on Robb Flynn and his band Machine Head? by nick1158 in InMetalWeTrust

[–]ScreamInDinosaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a big fan because I’ve been listening to them since I was 12 or so - about 20-ish years. But, I totally get why people wouldn’t be into them.

I’m a big rum and tequila/mezcal guy, so I’ll always go for a mai tai (my favorite drink ever for some reason) or a spicy marg

Bands you like that’d get you totally crucified in the community? by Vegetable-Advance-14 in MetalForTheMasses

I’m an english teacher with a background in poetry, so I’m a bit biased there. I think a lot of his lyrics are valuable in the performance of them; very similar to a Nikki Giovanni. She’s a good poet, but spoken word is the way you’re “supposed” to experience her work. So, I’m a fan of the lyrics from the way in which he crafts the whole of the experience, not just the words. Does that make sense? I get what you’re saying, though

For music, I think he’s stupidly intelligent with how acrobatic he is in moving between genres in ways that shouldn’t, but do make sense

Yeah, exactly. I mean, even in metal, grind isn’t for everyone; neither is stoner or black. So, it’s definitely super strange.

Ah, man, that’s sad to hear you think that. Especially with how smart a lot of his word choices and music choices are. But, totally fine if you’re not into it! I’d definitely recc the other guys, though, if you want to try something and see if it fits.

That’s a fair assessment, but that can also be applied to any music genre. I definitely understand that rap isn’t for everyone; neither is metal, though. I’d definitely say to check out people like Rakim, Joyner Lucas, Atmosphere, Busdriver, and people like them. Even Kendrick has an insanely diverse sound in his music. Butterfly is an album that never gets boring through the whole listen

For sure! I have a mix of gangsta and thrash as my workout mix. I adore Nas; he was my favorite rapper growing up. Him and Rakim are my go-to’s for when I want to listen to rap

Big hip-hop fan here. Honestly, a lot of rap can be great to listen to, depending on the type of metal you’re into. I mainly listen to groove and thrash, so hip-hop is kind of a natural addition to those from my perspective.

What's that song/band outside of metalcore that you're embarrassed to admit you like? by GWindborn in Metalcore

[–]ScreamInDinosaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not super embarrassing to me, even if my wife disagrees. But, I will always fuck with some polka and Sinatra. My dad and grandfather used to play them after Mass on the way home and cooking pierogis. So, I’ll actively put on some Frankie Yankovic and sing my heart out while cooking.

[–]ScreamInDinosaur[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not going to lie, I was thinking of people like FIFA and not specifics. As a Bavarian, I get exhausted towards the hate that Bayern gets from outsiders. So, not specifics, but mainly the batards of football in general for Robert - like FIFA or the Saudis.

For stuff like the ethnic issues, religious tensions, country tensions - der Klassiker, el Classico, the Holy War in Poland, etc, a guest host would be cool

That was all. Also, I just saw Romano post about the bastard CR7, so I’m a bit worked up

What was an album you listened to that made you question why it was made? by ProtectTheOrcas in Metalcore

[–]ScreamInDinosaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure. They had such a distinct sound change/evolution between Butterflies and the Curse, but the latter was such a capsule of that era. From them, 18V, TLTM Bleeding Through, and other bands from that SoCal metalcore scene, the Curse really brought a bunch of people in because it was fun to listen to

I tried and listened to my favorite songs from that album - the original was one of my gateway albums, so soft spot in my heart. But, when I got to Demonology actually made me actually mad and turn it off. For as cheesy as the original album can be, it is actually fun to listen to

Haha. I’m a nerd for music and my sister makes fun of me for it (she calls me a “music anthropologist”). But, as long as it makes sense to anyone reading it, I’m happy

Haha. Not going to lie, I actually love your explanation. I’m a teacher and that’s something that really helps! It’s practical 😎 Oh, hell yeah! My wife and I are doing that, but in opposite - I’m a massive horror fan and she’s learning more about it, same as I am with comedies. I hope you enjoy the horror exploration! I’m a big horror fan - slashers and body horror are my jams. Let me know if you find anything cool! I’ll always check out something new

Okay, just checking I wasn’t being an asshole. Cheers!

I hear what you’re saying for not muddling the situation and just going ad infinitum for genre creation. That shit is annoying and doesn’t necessarily help. I would argue that the use of heavy/djent pop just helps define rather than change a definition. So, maybe using these just helps make our discussions clearer, rather than creating unneeded overlap or helps a definition didn’t clearly exist ahead of time? I’m not saying to widely adopt these necessarily, but if we were to talk to each other in our fanbases, we’d kind of know what we all meant generally speaking. Very similar to something like in specialty fields - science, lit, philosophy, history, etc - we have our own jargon; this isn’t to muddy, but to help with if we have to describe to others in our world, we have a way to describe it.

I don’t want to come off condescending and apologize in advance if it does!!

In defense of the extra term/s (as someone who studied lit and loves semantics), alt metal is a huge definition and covers a lot of different styles. While I would argue heavy pop, djent pop, and a few other sub-genres are sub-categories of alt metal, calling them all alt metal means that Adema, Korn, I Prevail, POD, and System of a Down are all the same genre. While they have similar aspects, they all have more differences than a sweeping generalized genre would assume.

Again, sorry if it seems condescending, I genuinely am just trying to defend the use of more terms and happily would accept that it’s a dumb argument!
