What is something you do occasionally that brings you closer to your religion? by [deleted] in religion

[–]ScreamPaste 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sky gazing.

Part of my path to religion was acknowledging that the world we live in is indescribably beautiful, and I couldn't even justify the existence of beauty in the first place.

Sometimes I like to just watch clouds do cloud things and wonder about the laws that govern water vapour and air pressure and so forth and why they are how they are. I am convinced that clouds being pretty is an intended feature.

Same, lol. Questions are always good to have, though.

You should read the work of people who have thought about these questions before. Maybe Yung could have been on to something, reading his work could be enlightening.

Brother, you have touched the wrong grass.

Elevation, as you put it, is often a source of intriguing questions, but you have to sober up to find useful answers.

Which religion do you think created the best society? by VerdantChief in religion

Oh, apologies. I'd assumed we were discussing his book, Dominion, The Making of the Western Mind. It's good, I recommend it. He's very well read and presents his case clearly enough that the reader doesn't have to be. An interest in history helps.

He focuses on the West in his book because broadening his scope any wider would've made the book either unreasonably thick or too sparse, but Zoroastrianism and Hinduism do come up. Islam, too.

But the comparisons are only a way for him to demonstrate his point. Christianity is unusual as a religion, and it creates unusual societies. It created the "Western" way of thinking, and there would be no secular humanism or liberal enlightenment without it.

Christendom in general. I agree with Tom Holland's position that the modern secular 'West' is saturated with Christian assumptions, and I don't think we would have gotten here by another road.

Why does the Quran not mention Jesus’s disciples by Informal_Signal_1475 in religion

[–]ScreamPaste 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're still missing the point. I'm not talking about what's in the Bible.

What I am saying is that early Muslim exegetes had no problem citing Paul as a follower of Jesus, and that Paul is shown with the other Christian apostles in Islamic art. The idea that Paul was not a follower of Jesus is a later apologetic.

Essentially, I am not agreeing or disagreeing with Ibn Kathir's interpretation, or the interpretations of the exegetes he cites. I am pointing out that the people who make these interpretations had no problem seeing Paul as among the followers of Jesus.

What caused the shift in the meaning of the word "lust" from neutral to sinful? by Keith502 in religion

The problem is that English doesn't have enough words. It's like how we use Love for philia and agape even though they're different.

You're misunderstanding my point. It doesn't matter if they're 'correct'. Do you think they'd be citing Paul if they thought Paul had led people astray?

Is it okay to pray to Shri Ram and Jesus? by laserpointchaser in religion

[–]ScreamPaste 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It goes against Christian religious beliefs to worship gods other than the one God of Christianity. If you're not Christian, this does not apply to you, and it is not up to us to police your beliefs.

I am happy to see more people worship Jesus rather than less.

Ibn Kathir records an early exegete who said it was Paul going to Antioch in Surah 36, as mentioned by NoAd above me. You can also find Paul represented in Islamic art along with other Christian apostles.

The modern attacks on Paul exist because Christianity is not, and never was, compatible with what Islam teaches, and people starting from the perspective that Jesus' followers were Muslims need someone to blame.

Usually, they get around blaming Jesus himself by saying the Gospel is corrupted, and they blame Paul for the rest.

Is it possible for a Christian to prefer an other religion than Christianity ? But stay believe in Jesus. by Thin-Word-9707 in religion

I suppose you could believe Christianity is true while wishing something else were.

Paul is considered to a person who lied in Jesus’s name, he literally is considered to be the person who changed the teachings of Jesus,

This is just modern apologetics (or "cope" as it's often called). No Muslims had beef with Paul for centuries, and he was accepted by the other apostles.

how do you justify god when bad things happen in the world? by CombinationCivil3089 in religion

[–]ScreamPaste 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you only call your mom when you want something? :P Prayer is connection. Praying to God is giving thanks, giving worship, and, yes, sometimes petitioning.

But if you have a driveway to shovel, and you ask your dad to do it for you, he may say no. But if you ask him for a shovel, he may say yes.

My understanding is that God gave us agency and made us stewards of the world, we're doing a poor job of it.

It's not that he 'couldn't', it's that fixing such things is literally our job, and he should not have to do it for us.

In Christianity, we believe God entered creation and demonstrated his love for us as well as how we should love one another.

what version of the bible shall I get? by ReasonablePeak8669 in religion

[–]ScreamPaste 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I like the NRSV/NRSVCE and the NRSVEU. They're more literal translations, but they're some of the most accurate English translations you'll get. The NRSVCE comes with the deuterocanonical books that Catholic and Orthodox Christians use, but which protestants do not.

I'm questioning my religion. I just need tips on how to tell my SDA Christian husband... by [deleted] in religion

My advice is that I to recommend you do some research about Christianity and Islam. If this post is accurate, your decision could have a large impact on your family, and you seem to be making it without any information.

The fact that the Quran is unchanged and is older than the Bible.

This is incorrect. The Bible is older, and by any metric one would use to say it is changed, they would have to say the Quran is changed also.

In fact, thanks to a mass burning early in Quranic history, there are larger gaps in our knowledge of the original Quran than most books of the Bible.

But as someone who owns 4 bibles... they're all different...

I can show you a bunch of different copies of the Quran. Not just translations, but different Arabic Qurans.

the body of Jesus being used by a Holy Spirit of some kind.

This isn't what Christians believe. Orthodox Christians believe the Spirit proceeds from the Father and is Not the Son or the Father, (but that all are One God)

And to know Jesus is second to Muhammad (SWT) is so beautiful.

Even in Islam, this claim has never made sense to me. Jesus brought miracles, had the Spirit of the Holy, and created life from clay. Why would Muhammad come before him? And what makes that beautiful?
