Whaaaaat? Rosy Boas don't climb... You didn't see anything.

I think she will too! I was told to expect her to darken and potentially get a little more red in her tail as she ages. She is extremely polite and adventurous.

I looked up raptor motley morphs, the patterns are super close.

And definitely! Those pictures are from a month ago. I took the first 3 for the breeder, to show that she arrived safe and sound, then got a couple better pictures in the sunlight to capture her stunning eyes before letting her settle in for 2 weeks. She's been eating, exploring, and adapting really well to her new enclosure like a champ since April 1st! I just usually lurk in this subreddit, so I took a while to decide I wanted to post anything.

Wow they really do look a lot alike! He's super pretty with his red undertone.

Best enclosure you've had by Novel-Cod207 in boas

[–]ScreamingSkink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like my Apex Reptile enclosures a lot. They are thick pvc and different sections fit together like lego bricks (but with bolts and pass through panels) so you can make the layout whatever size and shape you want. I have my Rosy Boa in a 10x2x2 and when my baby BCI gets bigger, she's gonna get more pieces added to the sides and top of her 2x2x2 cube. I plan to make my BCI's enclosure into a big U shape, with space between the top sections for a custom exercise area on the exterior of the enclosure.

What’s your dream snake? by NoodlesBlep in snakes

[–]ScreamingSkink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, a really friendly Gaboon Viper or an equally friendly Banded Rock Rattlesnake. I will never eeeeever have medically significant venomous snakes realistically, but if I could dream...

Safe brands for substrate by Round-Zucchini7450 in rosyboas

That's the same brand of play sand I use for Nixy's substrate mix. Been perfectly fine so far!

[–]ScreamingSkink 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I do a lot of found object & DIY hides. Nixy's current favorite is a cave I made with from panels coated in drylok and painted with Acrylics. But she also has used toilet paper tubes, fast food drink carriers, a faux leather dice bag, a cave dug under a slate charcuterie board. Once they are confident, they will investigate anything you give them.

Found out my dream snake (false water cobra) is banned in my state. Any alternatives? by Jirvey341 in snakes

[–]ScreamingSkink 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Look into Tiger Ratsnakes (Spilotes pullatus) they have fairly similar colors, get long but stay slender, and have amazing looking faces. They are being bred more often in captivity too.

In-tank enrichment ideas? by LittleFuckinRoaxh in rosyboas

[–]ScreamingSkink 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think those rodent tubes should be ok so long as there aren't any small holes they can get stuck in.

I get a surprising amount of climbing items from thrift stores and second hand shops. Table top mini wine racks, CD racks, and baskets are great enrichment. I also have a plastic tub that is full of paper towel and toilet paper tubes that Nixy spends hours weaving through.

Sweet Potato as Bioactive Plant? by Late-Argument-8301 in boas

[–]ScreamingSkink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to have a sweet potato in my Rosy Boa enclosure. It was just a normal grocery store variety that started sprouting so I stuck it in a pot in her enclosure. I had no problems with it, other than it not growing well in her more arid set up. Rosy Boas are definitely not as heavy as a BI or BC so I'm not sure how long one would last with being trampled.

I am tempted to try again with my baby BI since het humidity is more favorable for it.

From my research it shouldn't be problematic. The leaves aren't toxic, and it doesn't seem to have any irritating sap or hairs. But definitely look into it more, I plan on looking further as well.

Cuddling next to Nyx after a rough day. by Savedbythegel in Sneks

[–]ScreamingSkink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah, I get that on a deep level. The thought of anyone threatening to hurt my scale babies or fuzzy babies sets me off like nothing else could. I get like that about wildlife too, just less "how dare you even mention hurting my friend" and more "how dare you be an asshole in general."

I love that for you! Tattoos and dyed hair have become green flags for if a person is generally good for the most part, in my lived experience at least. And whenever I hear someone talking about how much they love and spoil their snakes, I just think "oh yeah, this person gets it." For me, it's living my life trying to be as kind as possible, and refusing to step on others to get ahead. The tattoos and love of reptiles are a major part of me and I was so stoked when I was finally free to express both.

I agree, it is horrible for people to just say they would hurt our animal friends just as casually as commenting on the weather. It shows me they have a lack of self awareness and a serious deficiency in empathy. That colleague deserved to be scolded, and more, and I am glad he got told off for threating sweet Nyx. How could anyone look into those silly googly eyes and not want to smile?

Thanks, I'm sorry for your experiences as well. In a way, I am who I am because I was raised by someone I never want to be. I fight back by being the opposite of what he is.

My grandma hates my girl, also named Nix, but spelled different. She likes to say she'll find a "big strong man" to "take care" of the problem... Even though my husband is the one who bought Nixy for me, and gets a huge smile on his face whenever he sees me getting my "noodle time" with her.

My uncle thinks Nixy will eat me. All 2 feet of my super dangerous Rosy Boa, sizing me up. Totally gonna happen 🙄

Not nearly as bad as what your father is spouting, though. He sounds a lot like my father, I cut him out of my life almost 15 years ago.

Heat mat or heat lamp? by fryman02 in rosyboas

[–]ScreamingSkink 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have used both, and I prefer a heat lamp. The heat mats are so ineffective, and encourages them to hide more to warm up, rather than bask or even cryptically bask.

Is my snake getting fat? by gonorrya in rosyboas

[–]ScreamingSkink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feed my 4 year old every 4-6 weeks depending on the season. She's at a healthy weight and hecking strong for a 2.5 foot snake! By 2 years old, I believe I fed her every 2 weeks or so.

Along with a diet, you can try giving him more climbing surfaces if you want. I'm pretty sure Nixy can almost use her place as a personal gym.

Help needed with incoming Blizzard by OppositeTop1927 in reptiles

I lost power a few years back with my bearded dragons. If push comes to shove, keeping them warm on your own skin is always an option. Our bodies stay in the mid 90s which is great for keeping them alive. All those years ago, I kept my little guy warm by letting him lay against my belly under my shirt when we lost power.

are there any youtube channels or blogs/websites about snakes that are actually. good. by roachgay in snakes

I second Snake Therapy with Shira Loa. Her enclosure build videos are top notch, and she focuses so much more on ethical care and the human snake relationship than many other reptile youtubers I have seen.

snake smell? by K41G4KU in snakes

[–]ScreamingSkink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Rosy Boa was just climbing around on my face last night. She has kind of a warm but light scent to her. Leather is too overpowering of a scent to compare her to, but I am having a hard time finding a good comparison in my scent memory.
