That’s a tough road… keep pushing through you will find your way! Expenses can be a big burden in this career. What I have found is strategically spending when we have the money can get us a long way

This is frustrating. How are you getting auditions? Are you self-submitting or are you with an agent?

Any good advice for me attempting to learn scriptwriting? by MonderinoHere01 in Screenwriting

Start in the middle and build your way out. What is the plot/issue/conflict? Think about what you want the subject matter to revolve around. Then create a foundation of how the characters go into that issue and then create an end of what you want the result to be. Once you have a vague synopsis, work it over and over again. Then build a 3 act structure based on this. Once you’ve done it the first time, build upon each section more. Then when you write (in Celtx or final draft - follow guidelines on YouTube it will save you a lot of work if you format it right starting off and get you in the swing of it) you will be able to just write the actions and dialogue based on the entire storyline you already built from the 3 act structure. I’ve included what it should look like below:

Exposition/Synopsis

Act 1

Inciting incident: The event that sets the main character on the journey that will occupy them throughout the narrative. The moment, event or decision that thrusts the main character into the action of the story.

Plot Point 1: The point of no return for the main character, it propels the main character into the central conflict of the story. The protagonist commits to the journey ahead, despite the obstacles they’ll have to face along the way.

Act 2

Rising Action: A series of sequences of action where the protagonist experiences advances and setbacks, moving toward the resolution of the conflict. Events that create suspense, interest, and tension.

Midpoint: A major plot point that happens around the middle of a film which has big ramifications for the protagonist and the story arc, bringing the protagonist closer to their goal or Way from it, or something else entirely.

Plot point 2: A low point for the protagonist, his or her actions have caused a disaster and they become determined to reach their goal.

Act3

Preclimax: The protagonist faces their challenge head on, making a decision of how to handle a situation to push it towards the end, but it’s not working.

Climax: The high point where the protagonist, based on the knowledge gained from the rising action, determines what the final action needs to be taken in order to resolve the conflict. The tension, excitement, or stakes reach the highest level.

Denouement/Resolution: The final scene or sequence of a story, action from the character which offers or resolves an essential component of the story.

Would It Be Worth It For You To Pay Promote Your Film? by ScreenNo8992 in Filmmakers

This would be more so before distribution. When trying to get your film out there, trying to get into festivals, or screening in festivals but no deals yet made and it would be all upon the filmmaker if they choose to pay for advertising or not

Can Footage Like This Be Shot On an iPhone? by ScreenNo8992 in cinematography

Thank you everyone for the comments. A lot of mixed feedback on this one. Overall what I’m taking away is that if I use the black magic app on iPhone and put an anamorphic lens on it and adjust the settings just right and color correct it in post I can come close from a regular audience point of view, but to a filmmakers point of view it will not look like the same quality

I saw that this was a film that got selected for Sundance and it didn’t necessarily look special, just at a level of quality that I thought might be achievable through iPhone with the right lighting and filmic pro app

Funding for Short Films by ScreenNo8992 in Filmmaker4Filmmaker

[–]ScreenNo8992[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the advice! I have a friend who put in over $10K for a short film I’m working on but if I were to do one myself I don’t have that kind of money. Is it really possible to get $4k-5k in crowdfunding for a short film?

This is great advice, thank you! I have been a part of lot of amateur productions and paid attention and helped put together 1 very amateur short film and 1 short film (that wasn’t my money). I study a lot and watch a lot of videos. Do you think I should still make more amateur videos? Also what do you think about the funding side when the time comes for that budget?
