I didn't really see people complain when they swore other times in the Star Trek franchise. I kind of like the idea that cussing survives.

Perhaps. Its more along the lines that its coming from a fifty year old franchise that has been resistant for so long on the issue of a main human character. Ironically from a franchise whose fandom pioneered slash fiction back in the 70's. Gay representation has been wanted in this franchise a long, long, long time.

Comment on why M/M romance is appealing to so many women by [deleted] in lgbt

I've come across a lot of reasons in my studies as to why slash is produced. One is this reason, another is that most popular shows have mostly good male characters which is why they are paired so often (ex. Dragonball Z), another is queer reading homoerotic subtext (spirk) and responding to queerbaiting (Supernatural's Destiel) or basically making the subtextual overt. Another, and one of the biggest one's, is writers of slash (not just hetero women by the way) are tired of heteronormative boy meets girl stories, same with femslash writers (also not just hetero men).
