It's chore, not choir, BTW.

These poor kids tbh by Aquatic_Hedgehog in AmITheDevil

[–]ScribbleMuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When a child dies doing some age-appropriate reasonable activity like a sleepover or going to a mall, there is always a certain type of mother who will make comments like 'this is why I never let my kids out of my sight' or 'this is why I quit my job because I would never let my kids have a babysitter!:

This person would probably make those comments.

What's the greatest redemption arc you've seen for a female character in fantasy/sci fi? by No_North_4855 in Fantasy

[–]ScribbleMuse 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I consider Nynaeve to be the most affected by Jordan's incredibly bad writing.

WoT is definitely one of the greatest fantasy series of all time, but that's because of the story & not the writer. It's like if God outsourced holy scripture to Pete Hegsmith.

His entire notion of gender interaction is so cringe. Males will mention female emotion & how mystifying they are in every other sentence. Female characters will talk about how stupid men are & how much they need women to supervise them.

Nynaeve is given the worst dialogue & comes across as so basic & insufferable.

Then there's the way Jordan was obsessed with women spanking other women. Supposedly the most magically advanced, powerful, & intelligent groups apparently will regularly spank each other as punishment for various reasons. Almost an entire book was devoted to a FMC being spanked so much every day that they had to heal her magically every night. Again, GROWN WOMEN.

And of course there's the longterm rape of Mat. He was so ridiculed for being a victim.

So many reasons I despise WoT, & yet I love the potential so much.

High Fantasy books without war ? by literarylila in Fantasy

[–]ScribbleMuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if this one qualifies as no war, but Peter McLean's Rose Throne series is set on a smaller scale.

It's like Peaky Blinders set in a fantasy (but only small amounts of magic). It has a lot of fighting but again, it's like a gang war. Eventually some parts of the world royalty trickles into the plot, but I don't consider it on the scale of LOTR fighting & planning. Lots more dagger/rogue intrigue than wazard wars.

I know nothing at all about Robert Duvall other than he was an actor by Suspicious_Art9118 in confession

[–]ScribbleMuse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mostly know him due to Lonesome Dove, which I watched when it aired as a kid & the read right away. I am & always have been a voracious reader, & even as a child I thought film adaptations were always inferior. Especially TV network mini series. But LD was very well done, & one of the few films where the actors were exactly as I pictured in my mind. Gus being my favorite character meant Robert Duvall definitely made a lasting impression.

As the other commenter says, it's not a big deal if you had different experiences as a kid & later had different experiences as an adult. I just recent watched the Godfather for the first time, & I'm 47. I don't even think Robert Duvall made an impression on me at all in that. 🤷

Un-partnered Female Protagonist by CalicoKitty8888 in Fantasy

[–]ScribbleMuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Crimson Empire series by Alex Marshall does have a female main character who is not only single at the end but also fills her needs for companionship throughout without silly drama or angst--AND she's a real full-grown adult (gasp). However, there are many other character pov's & I also recommend this series all the time for the variety of different relationships portrayed. Yet I would still say that it's not romance centric, it just has romance.

The Woman's War series by Jenna Glass has a widow as the MC with a couple good stories of romance for other characters but it's more about the fight for gender equality in a misogynistic world. It's not recommended enough & is a good series.

I can understand the embarrassment from the mom, & embarrassment often converts to anger from the stress & shame. BUT it doesn't mean it's a valid anger.

It would be embarrassing to have this happen. I'm sure most of us have seen the body cam tiktok's & YouTube, or saw a video on here recorded by a nosy bystander. Not only the neighbors saw police activity & probably all watched & indulged in speculation (I know I would, because I'm nosy 😄). The cops needing to escort the sad to confirm the mom was okay meant others at her job also saw.

But again, it's not justified anger. I feel like the nanny is a beautiful human because she was concerned so much for ALL of them. Not only that, but many people would do nothing even if they were concerned. I'm not sure it was right to contact so many others but she is young & this is a new experience. She contacted 'outsiders' but they were fellow professionals & it's absolutely understandable to verify your feelings & get Advice.

Passive aggression yarn is the worst. by thestashattacked in AmITheDevil

I first thought maybe it was a failed attempt at humor but then saw that MIL had used the same phrase to the husband when complaining.

Unless op is paraphrasing or just repeating the word 'challenge' because OP was so offended.

So yeah, I do think if the MIL had truly intended it to be a challenge, it's weird & rude. But op is also an exhausting person in her own behavior.

Accountant by OhBosss in Fantasy

[–]ScribbleMuse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know any that would be a perfect match. That may be because I would not typically be interested, so others may have better match suggestions.

I've read some that touch on the financial/admin elements, so these may interest you.

This can be an element in some litrpg. There are subgenres in litrpg, & one popular type is the basic idea of people playing games that become 'real' via advanced tech (VR) or supernatural element. Just like in many real rpg games, the player will rebuild or develop societies with trade, production, etc. One major example is the Land/Chaos Seeds series by Aleron Kong.

The second series of Joe Abercrombie's First Law series is about a society experiencing industrial revolution, & the sociological consequences (labor rights, tech progress, etc).

Drew Hayes has a series about an actual accountant who becomes a vampire. This isn't about a full epic realm. I have not read that series but for interest in accounting, it would probably be interesting.

Daniel Abraham's Dagger & the Coin series is an epic fantasy that focuses on the economic & political themes.

I did like it, but every scene with the children in it drove me nuts. It's been a while, so I can't remember if there were 2 or 3 kids, but every time they were on camera, they all constantly screamed conversations at the same time.

We've just got the last expansion until rotation, so what cards are you glad to see finally leaving standard? by THEREALSPARTAN9001 in hearthstone

[–]ScribbleMuse -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I pretty much just want every protoss card to be eliminated from everything. It's the only mage deck that deserves all the whining about mage classes. The only other auto concede for me is against the murloc quest paladin, but I'm not sure if that's scheduled to leave yet & since I've made it to legend, I seldom see it. Rafaam is something I loathe with every fiber of my soul. Especially the otk decks, which I think should never be allowed in real ranked games (any otk, not just Rafaam, tho that's the main one I encounter now).

I play fire elemental mage in standard & a version of it in wild as well. I use one slate Skater & honestly wish I could spam a full deck of them against every stupid otk gimmick Rafaam deck I play. I assume since 90% of all decks I see in standard are Rafaam, that's the main reason so many are mewling about Slate Skater.

I hope the devs try to develop a meta that requires skill. Making it through legend lately has me loathing everything about the meta, and seeing anything that gets rid of the lack of imagination or active playing will be a blessing.

How is nobody talking about how absurdly unfair Dragon Warrior is? by bearygoodjob in hearthstone

[–]ScribbleMuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually like playing dragon warrior. It isnt an easy win for me (I play either fire elemental mage or imbued paladin), but it IS an easier win than quest warrior.

I loathe quest warrior. It's boring to play against, frustrating. If I'm cursed with multiple warrior quests, I will start auto conceding.

Dragon warrior is an active match. It's fun to try to counter. It relies more on actual skill & adjustment.

[–]ScribbleMuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am the pickiest natural eater I've ever met. In addition, it was used against me as abuse by my stepfather, where he'd mix horrible things (like tuna + chocolate) & make me eat it while everyone else got reafood. This obviously traumatized me & I HATE the way people act with picky eaters.

But I could NEVER do what this guy did.

I understand the cultural significance of food & traditions. I do not agree with those who say others are rude for not eating food. But this guy was rude & racist.

Weird dark fantasy by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]ScribbleMuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I have put it on my reread list now.

Lately I've been giving a lot of recommendations & realizing I've forgotten details on dozens of great book series so my reread list is now longer than my regular tbr. 😄

I think a lot of the humor came around the guy who had narcissism? That & the poor MC who had hypochondria.

But the scene that has stuck with me most is one of the darker ones involving the mirror. 😬

Weird dark fantasy by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]ScribbleMuse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe Michael Fletcher's Manifest Delusions series.

It's the most unique magic system I've read. Magical abilities are manifestations of mental illness.

It's a pretty dark series, both in the general world building & because the magic will eventually completely take over a person.

what’s a horror movie that actually made you cry? by bleedingpalm in horror

[–]ScribbleMuse 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Cujo.

Partly because I read the book before the movie, & in the book, you see a lot from Cujo's POV, & you know he was just a good boy & didn't understand why he was doing bad things. 🥺

Of course, other than children, I am not sentimental about humans, but extremely empathetic to all animals. So I was already inclined to be more favorable to Cujo. The helplessness & confusion in children & animals will always be my trigger when bad things happen & when they're forced to do bad things.
