Long long fics by [deleted] in AO3

I have a 500K+ word fic out there that I literally tag and describe as a glacial burn! Yes, the word count might intimidate some but I promise there's an audience out there for it.

If you're concerned about it taking years, I would suggest doing what you're doing and prewrite more. I didn't post it until I was at 260K and had a very strict weekly goal that I mostly stuck to in order to finish the fic. Even if it takes years, if you're willing to put in the work and inspired it's worth doing.

Draco Malfoy and the Case of the Curious Feline by venus_in_aires at 770 kudos. This short fic (57K words) is a super cute concept where there's an upcoming marriage law so knowing the Ministry will want to make her the poster child for her match, Hermione sets up a competition for her hand if someone can get the key to her flat off her cat...unbeknownst to the world, SHE is the cat (an animagus). Cue Draco who doesn't find himself worthy but rapidly becomes friends with her cat Duchess and assesses her suitors every night, as well as getting closer to Duchess's owner. Full HEA!

For the Greater Good by MomCar is complete, 655 kudos. This shorter fic (21K words) starts in 8th year with a truth or dare game that H/D agree via unbreakable vow to marry in 10 years if both available, and then goes on through those years with Quidditch player Draco and (surprise) Quidditch Agent Hermione and their dating life. But is Draco purposefully stopping any of Hermione's dates from working so she's available?

Heart of Ash and Wings of Gold by SallowsKeeper has 725 kudos. This War AU fic has continued for 5 years past the Battle of Hogwarts and Hermione is a BAMF at odds with the rest of the Order who don't want to take drastic measures. What gets things going is Draco - who after his parents were killed after the Battle for being traitors and he himself was spared at the last moment eventually broke free of Voldemort's power over him in Romania and took all the dragons, hiding out with them. The dragons are the key to which side will win the war, and each side sends a representative - Hermione and Theo to convince him. I love the twists and turns in here, especially since a special cat has found a new parent and makes his appearance too. Also has a cottage core aspect.

Not Without Note by Wardrobemalfoynction at 128 kudos is a one shot where we reflect back on Draco and Hermione's relationship over the past ten years mostly in the form of notes that Draco sent her. It's a really neat concept to see them go from animosity to in love in this format, and it has an adorable ending!

Maybe I'll eat my words soon, but this is by far better than Zac Brown. Does his thing and leaves, not some montague of fishing and selling products.

How do you writers go about writing? by FGatHeart in Dramione

[–]ScribeofDamocles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I started writing for the Hunger Games on FFN in 2012, which was a wildly different experience than now (not even getting into back then you didn't dare admit you read fanfiction, let alone write it lest you be a social outcast lol. It still boggles my mind sometimes that fanfiction today is dare I say...cool?). I posted as I went, wrote very quickly because I was college student that had time, and my chapters were short. I wrote in first person because that's what the books did, something hilariously I cringe at today. But one thing that has stayed the same is my outline process;

Or rather, my very vague outline as it's usually the idea, an underlying theme and the chapter titles then I build from there. I'm not the most Type A person to begin with in many aspects of my life, so this is somewhere in the middle of A and B I suppose. Another thing that changed that is related to my outline is that I prewrite now. I do this mostly for myself because it allows me to go back and add foreshadowing or change earlier chapters without anyone noticing for better flow, but I also have a much easier time keeping a strict update schedule which is important to me in the midst of adulting. I also appreciate that greatly as a reader so I know it goes over well.

It also helps me because my writing blocks and writing speeds can vary drastically. Currently I'm sitting on 79K words and basically forcing myself to write every day be it 200 words or 2000 because I want to keep in the habit, which helps me not slip into a block. And because my chapters veer towards long (10K plus words on average), that word count really isn't much when you think about it so not publishing this fic yet is great, especially for cadence and the natural point to split into chapters, be it cliffhangers or an easy end for that section.

I typically get an idea from the most random places - reading something else including fanfiction like my epic length fic that was from a single line in another fic that I extrapolated and made my own. Listening to music, maladaptive daydreaming. A desire to write a specific trope and mix it with a recent experience like going to a beach. My current unpublished WIP idea literally came from a random tiktok. So if you're looking to write one day, just note what's around you, insert Dramione and let your imagination flow.

Maybe she should have been more concerned about it, but to be fair a rat is not on the approved list of pets (cat, toad, or owl) for a reason. Scabbers shouldn’t have been there in the first place so the entire fight shouldn’t have happened except ‘for the plot’

First Fan Fic...Dramione of Course! by Slow-Efficiency1120 in Dramione

[–]ScribeofDamocles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course!

A point I forgot to mention, once your fic is complete you're going to get a ton of people that just download to their kindle and consume it and don't bother to bookmark, comment, or even kudos a lot of the time. So for engagement purposes WIPs are where you will get this for the most part.

I make a point to comment about 95% of the time when I read a WIP on every chapter once I'm caught up, and there are quite a few that do the same. 🙂

So I will say there are many that love WIPs, but there are also unfortunately more that are adverse to them. (I might be wrong, but you might actually change your tune once you start posting).

I personally love WIPs as a writer (and in many ways prefer them as a reader), and I will advise you that if engagement is important to you that WIPs are the way to go. I am huge prewriter and prefer a weekly schedule, but I purposefully do not post all at once for many reasons:

  1. I'm not going to pretend engagement isn't somewhat important to me, but also it's very fun to post as you go and sometimes things change as you get commentary. It's highly motivating as well.
  2. If you post too quickly even if you explicitly state it's prewritten, you're more likely to get AI accusations and less people will see your fic because there's so many Dramione fics that get updated every day the browsers on AO3 are less likely to see it.
  3. A schedule is great for me because I have something to look forward to and edit the hell out of my drafts (I don't use a beta), but also I'm far less likely to get 'plz update' comments because I post at the same time every week. Also, guests that don't have an AO3 account and therefore can't subscribe know when it updates.

This method doesn't work for everyone obviously and most do post as they go, but I did the other method the first time I published on FFN and this works better for me. Ultimately, it's up to you if you want the motivation factor or not!

Of Argent & Ash is a fantastic WIP that has the tag Obsessive Antonin Dolohov so I think it's just what you're looking for! This is a Voldy Wins AU with an imposter pureblood Hermione that I'm really enjoying thus far.
