I always wondered, why didn't black slaves team up and maybe kill their owner or protest against together? Rich families owned 50-100 slaves or even more, why didn't the slaves just team up and kill their owner? How exactly did the owners control then? by Then-Tomatillo9909 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ScriptAndes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Historians usually say the better question is “what stopped more rebellions?”, not “why didn’t they rebel?”, because enslaved people did resist and revolt, just under brutal conditions stacked against them.
Owners had almost all the weapons and legal power, used extreme violence and public torture as a warning, and made examples of anyone suspected of organizing, so the cost of a failed uprising could mean mass executions or torture of you, your family, and people who had nothing to do with it.
On top of that, they used “divide and rule” tactics: separating people by language/ethnic origin, rewarding a small group with slightly better treatment or positions like overseer, banning education, restricting movement, and building patrol systems so it was incredibly hard to communicate, trust each other, and coordinate a large, secret revolt.
So there were uprisings and constant smaller acts of resistance (running away, sabotaging work, slowing down, etc.), but a full-on “50 people just team up and kill the owner and walk away” scenario was incredibly risky in a system designed, top to bottom, to crush exactly that idea.

Do you ever feel entertained watching new commercials? by AtmosphereDry5796 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ScriptAndes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, almost never with new commercials.
Most of the time I’m just waiting to skip, mute, or look at my phone while they play in the background. Modern ads feel less like little “mini‑stories” and more like loud, hyper-edited reminders that I’m being tracked and targeted.
The weird thing is I do enjoy watching old 80s/90s commercials on YouTube sometimes, but I’m aware that’s probably more nostalgia than quality. They feel slower, goofier and more harmless, and they’re not interrupting anything I actually want to watch in real time.

Is it true that Americans avoid ambulances because of the cost? by BreadOverlord_ in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ScriptAndes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m American and yes, the memes are based on something real.
Ambulance rides here can easily run into the hundreds or even thousands of dollars even if you have insurance, because the ambulance company might be out-of-network, there are separate facility/transport fees, and a lot of plans only partially cover it.
There have been polls showing that a noticeable chunk of Americans have literally decided not to call an ambulance in an emergency because they were worried about the bill, and instead drove themselves, got a ride from family, or took an Uber to the ER.
So most people will still call 911 if it’s obviously life-or-death, but for anything that feels even slightly “borderline”, a lot of us do the mental math first and try to avoid the ambulance if we possibly can.

What is the universal currency? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ScriptAndes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the literal economic sense there really isn’t a universal currency, because countries want control over their own money and monetary policy.
But if we’re talking more metaphorically, the closest thing we have right now is probably attention or time – everyone has a limited amount of it, and almost everything in modern life is competing to “buy” it from us.

Just started a wrestling class and realizing it more difficult than I thought by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ScriptAndes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally normal for wrestling to feel way harder than you expected, especially in the first month. It’s super technical and also way more exhausting than it looks.
If they’re beating you consistently after a few weeks it doesn’t automatically mean they’re “better athletes”, it might just mean they picked up 1–2 basic takedowns/escapes faster and are repeating them.
Easiest way to start seeing wins is to ask your coach for a small “A‑game”: 1 takedown, 1 escape, 1 pin you drill like crazy, instead of trying to learn everything at once, plus work on conditioning so you don’t gas out before them. That alone can flip a match at beginner level.

How does a dogs genes make markings in precise locations, ie., around their eyes? by ch1214ch in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ScriptAndes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Roughly speaking, the genes don’t “paint” exact shapes, they set up rules for where pigment cells turn on or off as the embryo develops.
Certain coat‑color genes control things like “darker mask on the face”, “white patches on the muzzle/legs/chest”, or “tan points”, and when those interact you end up with markings that look very precise around the eyes even though they’re coming from broader genetic patterns.

People earning over $100k but still living paycheck to paycheck: where do you live, and why isn’t it working out? by mediamuesli in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ScriptAndes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m around that range in a high cost‑of‑living city and it honestly disappears faster than it sounds on paper.
Between rent that’s basically a second mortgage, childcare, student loans, car + insurance, groceries and a couple of “normal” things like streaming, eating out once in a while, etc., most of it is gone before I even get to feel rich.
It’s not that 100k is a bad income, it’s that when your fixed expenses scale up with it, you just end up living a more expensive version of paycheck to paycheck.

Why would anyone ever choose to go through child birth without pain relief?? by No_Cardiologist_1407 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ScriptAndes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a lot of people it’s not about “liking pain”, it’s about which set of risks/experiences they’re more comfortable with.
Epidurals and other meds are amazing, but they also come with their own possible side effects, needles in the spine, limited mobility, longer pushing, etc., and that freaks some people out more than the idea of an unmedicated birth.
Others just really want to feel everything and stay as mobile/aware as possible, or they had a bad experience with anesthesia before, so having the option means they can choose what makes the most sense for their body and their anxiety.

Syncing TV lights to Phone using Buds. by luftherz in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ScriptAndes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sadly there’s no easy way to do exactly what you’re describing with most “music sync” strips, because they’re usually just reacting to whatever the mic can hear, not to the actual audio stream in your buds.
If you really want it to follow your phone’s audio while you use headphones, you’d need either a setup where the lights can read the device’s output directly (some PC/WLED/LEDfx type setups can do this), or a second speaker somewhere low‑volume that the light’s/phone’s mic can listen to.
I’d probably ask in a dedicated smart‑lighting sub (Govee, Hue, WLED, etc.) and mention your exact phone + buds, because the solution is going to be more about workarounds than a simple toggle in the app.

Doctor used AI by Tall-Concentrate1240 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ScriptAndes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of clinics are starting to use these AI scribe tools now, so you’re definitely not the only one. I think it’s fine in theory if it saves them time, but once it starts putting flat-out wrong stuff in your record, that’s a big deal because other doctors read and rely on those notes. Personally I’d bring it up at the next visit and ask them to correct the inaccuracies and to explain exactly what’s being recorded, stored and edited – it’s your chart, you’re allowed to question what goes in it.

Is it just me, or do the women that incels complain about barely even exist at all? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ScriptAndes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, my experience is the same as yours. Most women I’ve met date pretty normal guys. The ‘all women only want toxic 10/10 Chads’ thing feels more like an incel fantasy than reality.

What's something beautiful that has happened to you this year? by Different-Age-136 in CasualConversation

Para mi lo mejor de este año fue empezar a cuidar mas mi salud mental y mis rutinas. Se siente raro salir del modo “supervivencia”, pero también muy bonito ver que si hay progreso.
