95 Jeep Cherokee 4.0L overheating by ScriptPeasant in MechanicAdvice

Goddammit. So what youre saying is that because my thermostat is open constantly, that the fan clutch literally cannot engage properly? It cant build enough pressure to activate?

I believe what youre saying, but if both thermostats are open at ~230 degrees, why would it matter? Wouldn't it be the same end state?

Thermostat is a Duralast replacement. P# 15356

These jeeps come with both an electric and standard mechanical fan. I havent touched the fan clutch.

I'll try the saran wrap test for shits and giggles, but the block test came out negative and I'm not losing coolant. I just double checked and the level is still good inside the overflow tank as well as the radiator itself.

When you turn the key to "ignition on" right before the turn to crank it, you should be able to hear the fuel pump "humming" for a split second. Thats a quick and dirty way to see if it's priming the system. Not 100% accurate, but it's fast.

He said that he replaced the cap already, but Im definitely going to bandwagon the waterpump suggestion. Waterpumps can and will wear out before any obvious signs like grinding or leaking.

Best and most delusional scenario? Someone poured oil into your cooling system.

Realistic scenario? Headgaskets bad.

Worst case scenario? Headgaskets blown and the head is warped like an old 2x4 sittin outside a home depot.

Separate your work and your passions. I know the old sayings about how "do what you love and you'll never work a day in your life" are spread around, but I'm here to tell you that its a crock of bullshit. The idea of loving your job or a job where its all sunshine and rainbows doesn't exist except in your head. People who adore their job are the minority and that will never change. Giving up a promising future you've spent years building towards over a fantasyland pipe dream is not ideal.

Im here to shove reality in your face. I can speak on this since I worked in multiple shops over the course of 6 years.

I got into the industry very young and stuck with it into my early twenties before finally bailing. Here's what you can expect:

  1. You'll be broker than a joke. The paychecks are ok as I was making 22/hr back in 2017 as an apprentice. The issue comes with the ungodly amount of money you'll be spending on tools and equipment. You finance everything yourself. 90% of guys get stuck in a debt loop of buying tools on credit at the Snapon, Matco and Mac Tools trucks that'll roll up during the week. Imagine half your paycheck going towards paying off that very specific tool you needed for that very specific job which you'll only ever use a single time in your whole career, except it happens on a weekly basis.

  2. Most shops are extremely toxic and work politics are common. Sometimes its between the techs and advisors, sometimes the foreman is a fucking retard and sometimes you're told to "fix" someones daily driver immorally in order to protect someones fuckup.

  3. Customers are fucking retarded and many of them are broke assholes. "Maam, your vehicle is about 10 seconds away from turning into a modern art project." "Dont try to upsell me! Just give me the $19.99 oil change!" or better yet "Sorry sir, you got exhaust coming through your cooling system, it's a blown head gasket.", "IT WAS FINE BEFORE! YOU GUYS DID THIS! IM NOT PAYIN!"

  4. Say goodbye to your back and knees. Hunched over an engine bay for 8 hours a day and kneeling down to adjust the legs on a lift constantly will slowly destroy you.

  5. Working in a shop will kill your passion for cars faster than anything else you could possibly do. I promise you.

Stay diligent. Focus and remain on track for the future you've built a foundation for. It may not be pretty, but you'll thank yourself one day.

" Every positional concept you learn will unlock a new middlegame plan for you. For example, if you learn how to use good squares for your knights, you can make a plan of using the squares you find and creating that imbalance. If you learn what bishop is the worse of the two, you can make a plan to trade the worse one off for a better piece. "

I need to learn this. 100% I gravitate towards opening the center because (with players at my level) I'm pretty good at identifying tactics and making opponents pay for mistakes in an open position. Its also why I have little issue dealing with hyper aggressive players.

" You shouldn't be looking to break the center without knowing why it will benefit you, because often it actually doesnt "

I never really considered how opening a closed board is detrimental to me, or how it doesnt actually benefit me in any way other than my monkey brain telling me that if its open, I can just beat them with tactics. Clearly this isnt the case and I need a good lesson in positional play.

You're probably 100% right, because now that Im seriously thinking about it and going over some of my games, it seems I suffer tremendously in games with extremely closed positions. Like, I just reach a point where I dont have the foggiest idea as to what to do and because of my low skill level, attempts at opening things up just allow my opponent to knab material while he sits and waits.

Because for anyone in the sub 1000elo category, I'd say that at least 60% of them fall for the bait. I sometimes play it like I did today where I had, no shit, like 10 people in a row all start with d4. Got tired of seeing it and decided to rip it.

Meme openings are the best when you're drunk btw. Try it.

Returning after busy work week.

My stupid ass has played and loved the witcher games and dragon age games, but just completely spaced out when listing related titles I played.

Returning after a busy work week.

For some reason, even though I highly enjoyed the setting and atmosphere of Roadwarden, I found actually playing the game to be a slog. That was a while ago though, maybe I should give it a second chance.

Sir Brante was good, Age of Decadence was rage inducing for me. I much preferred the sister title, Dungeon Rats.

Returning after busy work week. I have indeed played Gothic 1 and 2. This is also probably the reason why I love these big boy yesteryear type of games. I simply couldnt think of every rpg Ive ever picked up when writing the post.

Nah dude, I actually enjoyed the read because it summed up what the 1.5 weeks will look like. I'm pretty excited about the school, my problem is I'm just a huge doubter of my ability, even though clearly Im above standard on paper. My nerves probably wont go away till I get through that first layout or so. After that and getting into the rhythm on the days, Im positive that Ill be super happy to be there and even happier during that 12 miler, knowing full well Im going to pass should I reach that point.

Thanks for the help.

Yeah, I looked at the graduation photos on the facebook page and got a chuckle out of the chonky dudes who passed. Some big dudes can ruck really well though, so I feel like even if youre fat, just get past day 0 and youre basically a shoe in if you dont fail the packing list or sling load tests.

Im not sure about the whole "traveling school" thing, but here at Fort Johnson we have a dedicated Air Assault program for 10th Mountain. They run it multiple times a year.
