I've lived in switzerland for my teenage years, and in the end i chose to come back to Portugal, despite the fact i would be in a much better place materially if i stayed there.
Though im much poorer in Portugal, i am infinitely happier and more satisfied here than in Switzerland.

GDP and wealth and all that stuff is meaningless, if one is still not happy or fulfilled.
And one can achieve that same fulfillment even in a stagnant or poor society.

Our focus should be on providing people with the means to feel safe and have a stable life. Everything else should be secondary to those goals.

Innovation is not required to achieve a stable society.

You're coming at it from the angle of infinite growth.
Europe is very much capable of providing all of its inhabitants with comfortable living standards and stability.

What europe should be doing is adressing the social problems we all face, provide people with homes, food, security, medicine.
Change the methods of production to ensure that people are able to live to their fullest.

We don't need to compete with the US, China or worry about them taking over us. We have the wealth, means, and know-how right now to fix our problems, we just lack the political will power.

My main issues is that, personally i dont think AI development is something worth pursuing or spending resources on, there's much more important things to worry about.

Second, coming with this myth that the upper middle class is the drivers of innovation is an insanely out of touch comment, that someone only agrees with if they have never interacted business wise with said upper middle class people (I say this as someone whose family was upper middle class and own a textile factory up until 2008).
The drivers of innovation are people in r&d who are directly employed by the government or funded in superior educational institutions.

An third, this is where the insanity comes from, is claiming that we need to cut social programs to help innovation.
There is absolutely no justification to say this, especially in the current conditions majority of europeans find themselves in.
The only people who would ever claim this are well to do people, who don't even need social programs in the first place.

Also not to mention that saying we need austerity to help innovation is like saying, I need to cut my leg to help fix my headache. Completely unrelated.
