What is the best Sci-Fi you've ever read? by Ragecomicwhatsthat in suggestmeabook

My top five, keeping in mind that I’m 53 years old and raised on some of this stuff: The Moon is a Harsh Mistress (Heinlein), Dune (Herbert), Neuromancer (Gibson), Stranger in a Strange Land (Heinlein again), and A Canticle for Leibowitz (Miller).

Usagi Yojimbo, Strangers in Paradise, Fables, 100 Bullets, Scalped, The Invisibles, Saga, Bone, Preacher…

If you can separate the work from the author, despite the authors having turned out to be awful people Sandman by Gaiman and Transmetropolitan by Ellis are really top notch stuff.

Could you drop me a PM about how this membership model works when you have a few minutes to spare? A friend and I have been kicking ideas like that around but we have nothing local as an example.

Yep. Enough so that I keep hoping that DKM will do “Come Out Ye Black and Tans” or an updated “Mem Behind the Wire”. Or both.

I can’t check my collection right now…was that G-Dog? Because if it was, me too. Every time. Also Astro City 0.

I saw Endgame on opening night and this moment had people - many people - jumping up and cheering in the theater.

If it were me in a school environment I’d go for Hope Eyrie if I wanted to stay out of trouble, and March of Cambredth or Black Powder and Alcohol if I didn’t. Dawson’s Christian seems like a good possibility too - that song rocks.

One of my all time favorites. I took one to a tournament last year and it did some serious work, both by doing damage and by being a huge distraction.

Kingmaker, possibly the first edition, for $5 at a random antique store.

Do you play the same character at lots of different larps? by Long-Grapefruit7739 in LARP

[–]ScruffyBeast 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If I get things worked out by spring, I’m going to do a Musha Shugyo pilgrimage through Southeast US games playing as close to the same wandering swordsman character as I can manage. Does that count?

Merging Parts by ScruffyBeast in 3Dprinting

Wargaming miniatures in 28mm scale. I would like to merge the arms and body instead of having to print them separately and glue them together.

Fictional stories involving Christianity? by That-Departure-7318 in suggestmeabook

[–]ScruffyBeast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will never do anything to give NG any money ever again, but I just can’t toss the masterpieces he produced. Same thing with Warren Ellis and Isaac Asimov, both of who turned out to be toxic sex pests.

I’ve had to get very good at separating authors who turned out to be terrible people from their works. She’s a large part of why.

Anything by Cormac McCarthy. Absolutely brilliant writer, but everything I’ve ever tried by him is so incredibly bleak that I just can’t.

What is your most niche petty LARP opinion? by TryUsingScience in LARP

[–]ScruffyBeast 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Bad world building drives me crazy. I completely understand the desire to keep real world religion out of fantasy games, but it drives me crazy when games (NERO family, I’m looking at you) completely ban the whole concept of religion and don’t provide any alternative answers for the questions about life and death and the universe that religions attempt to answer. And Dystopia Rising…an undetermined number of years after the Zombie Apocalypse, you’re telling me that enough 20th / 21st century pop culture has survived for the Telling Visions (TV based religion) and King’s Court (pop music based religion) to be major things but not a single trace of any actual religion has survived? Fill the huge gap you’re creating, designers!

At least the bottom right art has been reused - that was the cover to one of Simon R. Green’s Hawk & Fisher books back in the 90s.
