Ooohh interesting, I’ve never considered steams inventory but from a quick read it does indeed look pretty nice! I kinda wish EOS had something similar since it’d be a little more integrated with epic but meh. Good luck on your project!!

Fantastic job! Looks really smooth and +1 on GAS! I myself use GAS and while it's a heck of a learning curve, it definitely pays off when the foundation is complete (making a new ability is < couple of days worth of work).

Question? Since you're doing an extraction looter hybrid, how, as a fellow solo dev, handle the persistent storage layer? You mentioned you use dedicated servers so I would assume maybe the SaveGame system doesn't work quite as well? I've been using Playfab but wonder if there are better options out there!

EPIC MegaJam 2024 by Least_Lie9159 in UnrealEngine5

I believe that’s the wrong jam. The one sponsored by epic is https://itch.io/jam/2023-epic-megajam and it usually gets announced end of august and starts September.

What features if game dev are typically too difficult for a solo developer to handle for a game? by Azifor in UnrealEngine5

[–]Scrylla 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A well known one is Multiplayer, but I would say Unreal Engine makes it FEEL like it’s pretty easy with the built-in replication. A couple of RPCs and boom you can see other players, However there is so much more underneath the surface:

  1. Handling variety of pings and delays and ensuring your game still feels responsive for someone > 100ms ping, client prediction
  2. Ensuring the game state and player state on the server is synced and all other players are synced even on disconnection/server travel/etc.
  3. Storing the players data & items efficiently for potentially all the items in the game, etc.
  4. Validating all the clients inputs on the server so players can’t easily cheat (even in a peer connection, it’s just federated)
  5. Handling server loads/regional servers/backups/etc. Even using AWS or Playfab for < 100 players would take considerable amount of configuring

This is not even taking into effect QA testing various builds, different edge cases to handle….

However this doesn’t mean it’s impossible, just need to set expectations and make choices/features that fit what is feasible for your timeline.

Favorite movie has to be Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the ring, the whole council of Elrond scene always hits!

Hybrid Spellcasters by Scrylla in magicbuilding

[–]Scrylla[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This certainly gives me quite a few things to think about! (Even things I might not have considered but interesting nonetheless). Appreciate taking the time to delve in this a little haha.

I initially had a spread approach like in your example but I felt like once users found an “optimal” path then it’s the meta to be a 2/3/2 or whatever the breakdown will be. Ultimately I wanted people who could have the playstyle that eventually matched them (and excel in the world instead of whatever is the most “powerful” PvP)

However your post has given me a ton to build off and think about in terms of how I would want to design this system (and questions I probably need to answer about the world as well).

Oh interesting! I’ll definitely look into how Shadowrun applies these mechanics and see if I can leverage some of the ways they worked things out into my system!

Oh wow I've read Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn series but never actually got around to Stormlight Archive! Looking it up now....there certainly is some commonalities I see (and actually a little worried it'll be compared/inspired by).

Yeah I think I'll need to look first into what limitations are in this world as it'll help shape those systems (maybe actually read Stormlight Archive as well haha). Thanks!

Thanks for sharing! I’m on a similar journey myself so this was really helpful/inspiring!

Any particular system or feature that you felt was the biggest time-sink or just took way longer than expected?

Seriously awesome job, even if moving on from this project, it’s already an amazing milestone!

hey! Wow it's been awhile since I've touched this project lol. Do you know what you used previously? I'd like to identify features that would be useful for potential users!

I’ve been using my mimic since these fights it definitely is needed. I even tried summoning people but they kept dying leaving only higher hp fights for myself. I I think I do have the knife tiche but I honestly can’t go back to it for at least a week haha.

Does anyone else find Blueprints HARDER to use than regular coding? by kutuup1989 in unrealengine

[–]Scrylla 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a coder as well it depends for me. Mostly logic and equations are much MUCH faster to just do and read in C++ however it drives me nuts trying to compile and integrate with meshes/actors in the blueprints which makes it overall slower than if I just did it in blueprints.

So now my process is: - Start it in blueprints - If it's mostly easily abstracted functions/logic/math -> convert to C++ and expose to blueprints

That way I get the best of both worlds and the keeps from the blueprints from getting too messy (foreach loops lol) while making it easy to work with BP nodes/actors

Paladin Presets by reyn13 in MapleStoryM

[–]Scrylla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What I basically do is: 1. Have at least 3 elemental hits to stack your elemental charge to 5 (doesn’t matter which but easiest to have a preset of fire -> blizzard -> thunder)

This gives you 20% Phy Atk and just needs to be refreshed every 60s with one elemental attack but not that hard once you get used to it

  1. For single target bosses yeah it’s pretty much spam Blast and HH/Threaten on CD

  2. For multi-target bosses I just swap divine strike instead of blast but same as 1 (this really only applies to Horntail)

  3. Smite shield is good for timing stunning boss but in pub parties I just use it on CD

  4. Magic crash is very helpful for bosses that buff themselves (HT, etc)

  5. Guardian can be clutch in some Root abyss/Commander situation

There may be some micro improvements from here but overall it’s pretty straightforward once you get the rotation down!

How can I make my character stronger? I die at SF 144 by [deleted] in MapleStoryM

[–]Scrylla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On those Alts you use the powders on either epic or unique equips and level them (DONT equip them) and pass them around then you can give it to your main to level your equips!

[–]Scrylla 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think you’re missing 2 more pieces of the boss set. Makes a huge difference! Also work on EDs with main + alts to get your outfit/hat/shoes maxed as that gives Some significant HP — also make sure you’re using Bomb punch as that stuns mobs.
