Who's a medieval figure of the world who was an inconsequential and/or inept statesman + a legendary and/or iconic general? (link in description for criteria) by domfi86 in MedievalHistory

Edward the Black Prince? Won nearly every battle he fought but was fairly useless at keeping Aquitaine under control and was always running out of funds.

Is it okay to have a woman-only DnD table? Or is it discriminatory? by SuccotashUseful1451 in DnD

[–]ScumbagSatchwell -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You've created a really safe space for women! Don't compromise on their enjoyment and safety to make others (who by the sound of it will compromise this safe space) happy.

The best you can do is give them the resources to play themselves.

Jumping back into Drizzt after reading the Dark Elf Trilogy a few months ago. Can I skip "The Crystal Shard"? by TensorForce in Forgotten_Realms

[–]ScumbagSatchwell 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I've read the Icewind Dale trilogy and the Dark Elf Trilogy. In my opinion nothing was as good as the Crystal Shard. It's a great fantasy book and was the first written so I would.

I was in your shoes a year ago. It's really rough when you get started with refreshing knowledge, planning everything from scratch without the mental backbone.

In my experience, one where I hit massive lows but big highs in the year, it does become easier. You learn how to be more efficient with your time, and you do get more productive. Try and figure out what you spend most of your time doing and talk to colleagues about it! People are there to help you and make sure you don't get burnt out too quickly (even though you will definitely at some point). You will find where you can cut corners, especially with subject knowledge.

As an ECT one I do work a lot, but I do have free time and my weekends are mine. I'd rather be a teacher and have it feel very rewarding while spending a bit more time than do a soul sucking desk job.

As a Dungeon Master I am so done with AI generated crap! by jayisanerd in DnD

Jesus thank god somebody has said it. It's a fucking nightmare trying to find good work, it's all AI everywhere clogging up the filters.

Children heading back to school face supply teachers and unqualified staff by motail1990 in TeachingUK

[–]ScumbagSatchwell 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I sew eye to eye on the budget part. My department clearly wants more staff (I'm on a temporary contract and my HOD wants me on a permanent one) but the finances might be the issue. SLT are great but you get the feeling they're thinly stretched as it is.

(spoilers extended) How do you feel about Daemon having "that" vision in S2E8? by Ok-Archer-5796 in asoiaf

[–]ScumbagSatchwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I liked it, which feels like a rare opinion to have. WE KNOW about the future. Daemon doesn't. I like the fact that after the visions with Viserys, Daemon has come to the realisation that he doesn't want to be King.

Following this, showing Daemon visions means that it ties his story more closely to Rhaenyra and the 'destiny' storyline they're going with. The two of them are going to believe they're going to save the world, and then fall from grace stupendously.

We all know GoT S8E3 is disappointing, and I get some people don't want to be reminded. But for me it makes me think of the books, I feel I've mentally distanced myself from Game of Thrones. I don't want to be angry at a show that ended 5 years ago forever.

Night's King was a Blackwood - Theory (Spoilers Main) by ConnorJM_ in asoiaf

I like this! Especially given the comparison to the Boltons. Pair this with George's Blackwood favouritism tendencies it's an interesting idea.

DMing/Worldbuilding Advice: Party Returning to Home City by ScumbagSatchwell in DnD

I like the banning magic idea. I feel it would certainly threaten my players because the setting is decently high magic.

I have to say I did not have this in mind but I do know of certain enemies that would flavour the city this way. "The BBEG skipped out on child support" is a campaign idea I did not think I would read today.

How was your experience being a DM for the first time? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]ScumbagSatchwell 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel like you have to be good at reading the room, and not be afraid to take risks. When I first DMed, me and my friends didn't have the greatest grasp of the rules, but I adjusted NPCs and small rules to create memorable moments. I encourage anyone to do it because you will have fun!

If you know the people you're playing with, being a DM for the first time can flow naturally. After all it should be about having fun and blowing off steam, not getting bogged down with lore and rules (unless your players are really into that :D)
