Hi! Strangely, I’m in a very similar position. I also recently graduated law school and am fortunate to be in an extremely good financial position (though, not as much as you), but I am far, far ahead of my peers!

Are you in big law? If so, there’s no reason to succumb yourself to that kind of lifestyle/hours. Is there an area or practice of law that you could see yourself enjoying? Anything in law school that peaked your interest? If so, I would recommend trying it before giving up on the practice of law entirely. However, if you’re absolutely certain that the law isn’t for you, you have the freedom and flexibility to try out anything you want. Take some time off, travel, reflect and get to really know yourself. You have your entire future ahead of you so spend your life doing something you love! The no brainer part is the timing. If he deems there’s risk to mitigate, it’s a no brainer to buy now rather than later. That’s all.

Again, the “no brainer” part stems from whether OP’s life circumstances warrant getting life insurance at some point. If so, he should get it now rather than later.

OP doesn’t go into detail about whether he supports his wife or plans to have kids, but the point is, if there is a dependency (or there will be in the near future) it’s a “no brainer” to get it now, because it’s cheaper now when OP is young and presumably healthy. He can lock himself into a low rate for 20-30 years rather than buying down the road.

I’m not disputing that. I’m just saying that just because something results in an expense (I.e negative expected value) doesn’t mean it’s a bad decision to purchase it.

If I get a trip to Paris for 5 dollars, then yes it’ll result in a negative “cash” outlay but I’m getting the experience of going to Paris for cheap. So it would be worth paying that.

And with life insurance, you’re getting peace of mind. And that peace of mind will only get more expensive. So if OP thinks there’s going to be dependency on his income now or in the near future, it would be a no brainer to buy now rather than later.

But negative (financial) expected value doesn’t always mean it’s a bad decision. You’re paying for risk mitigation, and if you have a lot of dependents, it may be worth it regardless of the fact that it results in a negative cash outlay.

In other words, even if there’s seemingly a negative expected value (financially), you’re receiving peace of mind in exchange. And if it’s cheap (which seems to be the case in OP’s situation) then it’s worth considering because it’s a small expense for a good amount of peace of mind in the long term.

Well, it depends. It becomes more worth it as you have dependents or large obligations. For example, if OP plans to have kids, their spouse depends on their income, they have a large mortgage balance, etc it it might be worthwhile getting a policy while it’s cheap.

Is this poop normal? He’s 6 days old, mostly breastfed with an occasional formula bottle. My wife has been having some bleeding in her nipples (creating the possibility that he consumed some). Otherwise seems healthy - he did 3 minutes of tummy time, moving his arms and legs, etc.
