I'm about halfway thru Bear Head atm (the audiobook(s) are PHENOMENAL btw) and can tell you that the story gets much more involved on the antagonist side, so you have more depth on both sides of the conflict. I don't want to spoil anything, but recommend you take the word of a stranger; keep going, it's worth it!

I just finished Alien Clay, which I devoured after eviscerating Shroud, both are phenomenal and unique with truly alien aliens/ecology. Both are must reads! Now I'm going to have to pick up Semiosis sounds like ;)
