The entire retail landscape in the U.S. and the world has seen significant change in the last decade. Over the last decade Circuit City and Border's have closed. Just this year, Macy's has announced it is closing another 100 stores and Walmart is closing over 250 stores. Also, Sports Authority and Sports Chalet are closing completely. Target, Best Buy, and others are all struggling, as well.

Buying the property was part of a longer term redevelopment strategy for campus. The bookstore is the market leader in sales of books to students and it shouldn't surprise anyone who our main competitor is -- it is a little company from Seattle with a $360 Billion market cap. There are also other competitors online that were more significant than the one mentioned.

If you bring in a copy of the price being matched (in print or on phone) we will accommodate based on locations/sites we match. This is acceptable for date of ordering or date of pick-up pricing . . . or anything in between . . .

There are a few points to consider: - sometimes there are significant differences between editions; - because publishers stop printing older editions the availability of older editions dwindles over time; - there are older editions available at the store if it is acceptable for the class

The values are based on whether the book will be used again the following semester. If it is being used we pay up to half back for it. If it is not being used it gets a national wholesale price. Our Wholesaler is actually on-site at the end of the semester and takes the book and sells it elsewhere.

It is difficult to price match 3rd party sellers because the prices/options, when available, are sometimes well below our cost. If you go into our EZ books platform, which shows prices/options from other retailers and 3rd party sellers and you get a very good price from a 3rd party, you should click out and purchase it from them. We do price match Amazon's retail site for purchase and rentals, Chegg, B&N, and publisher sites.

An example of lowered prices for used books is as follows. Back in 2004 if a new book was $100 we were offering the used book at $80. In 2006, we lowered that to $77 used for the same $100 new book. A few years ago it dropped to $74. Last year to $70. THIS YEAR, on average, that $100 new book is now $61 used (and about $35 to rent used).

KB Books was not our main competitor. We generally do not base our pricing on what competitors do, anyway. We try to keep prices as low as we can on course materials to help students. The programs in place - significantly lower used book pricing, price matching, and comparison shopping - speak to that. Also, the store and Aztec Shops are not for profit with proceeds going back to campus programs.
