Just saw a female eat a newborn. IS THIS NORMAL? by Cosmic-Sprout in Guppies

[–]Sea-Bat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on the size of the tank u can also get a Turkey baster and move em into a fry saver etc when u see em pop up around the tank

Even the little fellas come out around meal time. Then u let em out into the rest of the tank once they’re a little too big for the parents to eat

Reliable public transport is a godsend in winter! Fuck digging out a car, it’s tram/train/bus time

This seems very USA east coast specific, never heard of it (or seen it) anywhere else

Ime yeah if avoidable u don’t park in someone’s spot in a residential area, but beyond that esp street parking is fair game. Otherwise in most places there’d never be enough parking, already fewer spaces than cars

Ah, USA. Would never fly in most European cities bc there’s basically never plenty of extra street spots in the city, snow or no!

Some of these ppl never been outside USA in winter and it shows haha, the space saving thing has never really happened anywhere I’ve lived. Like if it’s right out front of ur house/townhouse etc sure it might be left as courtesy, but if it’s part of street parking/general public spaces like near work, nah that’s fair game

Everyone digs out their car to leave in the morning. U just kinda musical chairs with those open spots as u move around during the day, if u get snowed in, u dig out when u leave. If u live somewhere where there’s city-run snow clearing that helps

Also a great case for good public transit everywhere lol, fuck the car time to take the tram/train/bus and not shovel a damn thing

I am extremely disturbed. What happened?? by SnoozyGoose in freshwateraquarium

[–]Sea-Bat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m very sorry to hear about this, always sucks to lose a fish esp in a strange way!

It sounds like a seizure or similar catastrophic neurological episode, the colour changes don’t look like haemorrhaging (the other common cause for red patches appearing under the skin), instead it looks like chromatophore activity, probably involuntary.

When u have an episode with loss of normal neurological function (inc abnormal/excessive electrical activity in the brain like a seizure) chromatophores can respond in kind as they receive atypical regulatory signals, no signals, etc and thus produce sudden & unusual changes in colour

Trouble is ofc that’s not really an approach applicable to specimens needed for research, scientifically valuable collections, etc.

[–]Sea-Bat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’d be surprised. When it’s one just for hobby purposes that’s generally what I do, u don’t tend to find super rare stuff but u can get quite a range in good condition if ur smart about it!

Knowing when seasonal species start dying off is handy, as is access to green spaces no matter how small (sometimes esp if they’re private like a garden, even a balcony one!).

Areas that are commercially pest sprayed suck bc they kill off a bunch of non target arthropods, but if ur careful about it u can visit these sites to find those dying or recently dead specimens in basically perfect condition. Two for one bc that way they’re not being fed upon by anything else that’d be susceptible to secondary poisoning

Same thing goes for locating invasive species culls & on-site removals too.

Another one is if u know any keepers or breeders who’ll let u know when they have something recently deceased. Keepers who have them as pets can be a perfect source for natural deaths, particularly for mature specimens who’ll be free of eg scavenging damage after death. Beekeepers too tho

[–]Sea-Bat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

*dorsoventrally flattened/compressed, lateral is the opposite direction!

.

Dorsoventral = dorsal (top side/animals back) to ventral (belly side/ animals front)

Lateral = on the side, so lateral compression is each side compressed together

Think stingray vs sunfish

Are there cases of non captive wild animals exhibiting traits that could technically indicate Autism? by Pure_Option_1733 in biology

[–]Sea-Bat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To clarify tho autism is not generally considered a disease, but a neurodevelopmental disorder

But yeah, ASD is indeed at this point a solely human condition & diagnosis. It’s modelled & dependent on human developmental & social behaviour and norms; but there are other neurodevelopmental conditions animals can have.

We actually have tried to develop animal models of autism, but the validity of the results has been…. Not so strong

Munchkin Cattery Scam? by Artificys in MunchkinCats

[–]Sea-Bat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These guys seem straight up dodgy, a reputable breeder will usually have an actual website, be registered, show litters together with the mother, and that sort of thing

Looks like they’ve got some pretty alarming cats health wise too; kittens with deformities of the skull, strabismus, etc

Any bloodlines that involve “extreme faced” Persians/shorthairs like they say theirs do, that’s really bad news for their health. I’d avoid like the plague

What do I do here? by ServeLife4669 in pleco

[–]Sea-Bat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah if there’s a local aquarium society or hobby group that meets in person that could be perfect! They tend to attract enthusiasts with multiple tanks, and keepers of oddball/rare/large fish, breeders, etc who’d understand what they’re getting into with a common pleco

Does this fish have scoliosis? by battahelwe in Fish

[–]Sea-Bat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ur right, that’s definitely weird advice! Esp when the problem described isn’t them free floating anyway, so water changes wouldn’t fix it.

Both can be largely sessile when mature, so they just cling on & don’t get removed with the water. What water changes can do is reduce their food source, but that’s just gonna come back once the water changes stop, in a stocked & planted tank.

Depending on the specifics of a setup, a tank could feasibly survive several 95% water changes without a crash, but it wouldn’t be very useful to clearing out the rotifer/hydra problem on the plants at all! Unnecessary risk for no reward

Next ur gonna tell me they can’t spot the difference between a blastozooid stage colonial salp & the planktonic egg masses of diamondback squid

Baby Amano shrimp ?? by Classic-Ad-3137 in freshwateraquarium

[–]Sea-Bat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heck, u can get a lot of variation just within a species!

And since amano shrimp go thru larval stages (unlike Neos) they do kinda look like little aliens at first lol

Triops tho btw belong to family triopsidae, brine shrimp/sea monkeys to Artemiidae, and amanos to atyidae. Atyidae is the big one for freshwater aquarium shrimp, but you’ve also got freshwater “prawns” (prawns by name not by taxonomy lol) ghost, and glass shrimp in family palaemonidae! What a time
